"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

My old neighbor has/had a old chain driven conveyor. It pretty much has 2 massive chains that run along gears. The chains are connected with wood or in many cases some angle iron now. He used this one to move firewood. He had another old one that I had tried for a long time to get yet he would never sell it. He had another super small one. It was around 12 feet long and was only a V shape with a single chain in it with welded spikes/wedges on it. I think it was homemade as it appeared to be. He used it to move firewood as well. It was kinda neat. I had thought about building one like that myself when I was cutting firewood.

Really good video, Kevin! Look like it was a bit of a hassle getting that conveyor out of that place where I was connected to, but you guys got it out of there. Good job by the way! Good to see Don there working with you see he’s a little bit more back in action. That’s cool! It’s a shame that conveyor didn’t work from the bottom because I think that would’ve been maybe a little bit better on taking the stuff up but as far as keeping the conveyor itself in line I get I get that! Really liked the video. Can’t wait to see the next one whenever you’re going to use the conveyor belt! Take care!

I'd suggest using the conveyor to move the crushed rock and not the oversized into the crusher. If the crusher jams and the conveyor keeps feeding large rocks, they will just be sitting at the end grinding the belt away. The vibratory feed is the way to go
@herrskeletal3994
@herrskeletal3994 Месяц назад
The trailer jacks are a good idea they will help you level the conveyor so the belt wont track to one side or the other. though there should be some adjustment either at your head or tail pulley. Tracking the belt is important to keep it from rubbing on your skirting and cutting through the metal and leaking precious, precious gravel off the other side (the leaks wont be a big deal for your application but on an industrial size plant it really upsets the ground guys)
@allenenabnit7078
@allenenabnit7078 Месяц назад
You should use it to pile your crushed rock away from your crusher better to use it to move crushed rock away then to move rock into crusher works great for stacking split firewood also
@delandbrooks3291
@delandbrooks3291 13 часов назад
They use those alligator style connections on the "Apron" of the old school mangle iron used in commercial laundries. Some of those belts are 8 ft wide and they are made of heavily waxed canvas. They also use a stainless food grade type on the conveyors in meat packing plants. I did a lot of conveyor work back in my working days. They're odd in that the belt tracking can be hard to get right. Width makes that even harder.

Well you might be in for a bit of a surprise. The material used to stitch the two ends of the belt together is called cat gut. Because it's made out of cat gut. Good luck making your own binder ends. In the future you might want to make a piano hinge crimper
@jimmystuckey1412
@jimmystuckey1412 Месяц назад
Little addition. Put some skirting on the sides to like 3" onto the belt to keep small pieces from getting under the belt and jamming the tail pully. Aggregate belts are usually troughed. Flat belts are not ideal however it should work just fine with tweaks

Hey Kevin, Been missin ya, where ya been? It's great to see Don back in the videos again! He definitely brings a certain jeu ne ce quois to the videos, that was missing. The conveyor belt is a great idea for feeding the rock crusher, but, have you thought it would be a great way to catch the crushed rock and move it upwards to make a pile of crushed gravel that you could move around. Maybe 2 conveyors, one to feed the rocks to the crusher, and one to take the gravel away from underneath the crusher? Moving firewood with it would be good to. Maybe making a 1/2 circle that the carry away belt is on wheels that move side to side on a concrete pad, that you could also use as a base to catch and pick up whatever you use the belt for. A concrete pad would be better suited to scooping with the bucket of the tractor for gravel, soil, chicken compost piles, what have you, that needs to be piled and left for a period of time. This conveyor belt could have a multiple of uses around the property. Building a free standing rock bucket that can be detachable from the metal sides of the conveyor belt would probably be a great idea. Maybe with the other section of conveyor frame and platform you could build a feeder that lifts rock up into a bucket that would hold and prevent the rocks from firing out and kill those 2 birds with a rock bucket. You might have to buy more conveyor belt and a connection kit to bring the ends together. If you were to do that build the conveyor with the rock bucket so it sits to the side of the crusher so it creates a safer distance away from any rocks that get tossed out of the bucket. But if you build a bucket that sits on top of the crusher I don't see that being a problem because you could load it with rocks, then rocks are less likely to be thrown out of it because of the weight of the rocks ontop of each other in the bucket. Does that all make sense? Hopefully some of these ideas might be of use for you Kevin. Cheers, Matt - Toronto

Great video, and good job on that staple splice! A very square cut and then parallel installation of the staples makes the tracking easy. As you learned the top and bottom rolls need to be dead parallel. Any adjustments needed are to correct the lack of parallel in the cut/splice. *Belts will also wonder left and right from areas of the belt being stretched or at the splice. They also wonder if loaded unevenly(not in the center), especially if material is on the belt and also riding a side-wall. You don't "NEED" a conveyor belt for a crusher. The reason for the conveyor belt is to move material from the vibratory hopper/feeder to the crusher. A vibrating feeder is what evenly & consistently loads the crusher. It's generally not practical to put a vibe feeder 6-25feet in the air and be able to load it :) As a Millwright, I maintain a crusher plant as part of my job. The biggest thing is having a high-level sensor to stop the conveyor/feeder when the crusher is choking on the material. You could get into this with a IR break beam sensor, like a garage door. An arduino as a Programmable Logic Controller, a relay to switch the arduino's 5volts and a big relay called a contractor in industrial to switch 120v would be the best bet. If you comment on this I will elaborate fully.
@ModernSelfReliance
@ModernSelfReliance Месяц назад
I appreciate this comment. I'm probably going to end up making a vibrator deck that is loaded with the loader and using the conveyor to stack the crushed rock.

The angle of repose for crushed stone is 35 to 45 degrees. Your wheels are to close to the end of the conveyor. The stone pile will either engulf the wheels making it hard to pull the stone out from under it or push the conveyor back. Look up crushed stone conveyor belt slope angle and learn about them.

Im going to predict that for gravel you need to install angel iron ribs on the belt to keep the stone from rolling back down the belt as well as side skirts to stop gravel from rolling under the top belt between the two belt surfaces and getting jambed between the belt and the bottom roller.

Hello from New Zealand! Just come across the channel not so long ago while browsing log cabin builds and came across the original cabin build. Been binge watching ever since. So many awesome projects! Was wondering how you were getting on with "cloning" as you called it, the crab apple tree. This technique is called air layering and have had some pretty good success with it myself as I'm into doing bonsai trees and air layering is a good way to make new plants with parts of the bonsai that would otherwise be thrown away. Would reccomend you try again in early spring / summer and apply your rooting hormone ( I usually use a powdered one) above the cut on the branch as this is where the roots will form and give it at least 6 to 8 weeks before opening it up to check for root formation. Also if you can get it, try using damp spagnum moss to fill the plastic clip on thing. I just use a piece of clear plastic which allows you to see if roots are forming without opening it and some 1mm bonsai wire to secure the plastic around the top and bottom. For a more in depth look at air layering check this out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gniwkvKUpDg.html really good video showing how to do air layering. If you have maple trees you tap for sap with branches low enough you could do this to make new trees for free and make many new trees you could tap in the future.
