It depends on the capability of the display. HDR allows for wider dynamic range and a wider color gamut. So if you have a less-than-flagship LED TV or almost any projector, you won't notice much of a difference between HDR and SDR. But if you have a display capable of displaying peak highlights with over 1000 nits, true black levels, and can display 100% or more of DCI-P3 color gamut, then you will absolutely see huge differences (as long as the HDR was mastered decently, which it is in most but not all cases.) For all of those reasons, that is why I splurged on having high-end OLED displays. I want to be able to see and experience those differences. And for Gravity in particular, only OLEDs will be able to display the deep blacks of space accurately and with no blooming. That, combined with all of the aforementioned benefits of HDR, is why I will wait for a 4k HDR release of Gravity, (despite that Atmos track being very tempting.)
Duuuuuude! Thanks for the heads up!!!! Best Atmos mix ever since it was the first for home release. Alfonso Cuarón spent a LOT of time experimenting with the audio mix since Atmos was brand new. Now Atmos is mandatory, so no post production facility is given the same amount of time or money to make a truly immersive mix like Gravity. 🎉
I’m so glad he spent the time he did. It turned out so well. Have you seen Roma? Another Cuaron film with an unbelievable Atmos track. Thanks for watching! And your channel rocks btw!
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I keep meaning to watch Roma as well! Children of Men was my first introduction to Cuarón and I was instantly hooked, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy Roma too! 🙌
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Yes, i had been looking for it for ages. Thankfully the store didn't know what they had and priced it the same as the regular. I already had it in 3d (steelbook), now have both.
Even though the disk wasn’t atmos, the digital version is in atmos. The silent version is available in the iTunes Extras. I’ll wait for the 4k version for any other upgrades.
I read somewhere that the director was not doing 4k. Tried it and didn't bother completing. I know that's a bit vague and I don't have a link. But hopefully that's nonsense
I literally just got done watching this an hour and a half ago. The Atmos was amazing, and worth the upgrade. I didn’t have to pay $300. This one cost me $17 on Amazon.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHomeI wouldn’t worry at that. It’s always best to own, than to rent, etc. Plus they could always go bust again, as they already have once before. You just never know.
I’m considering picking this version up. I currently have the 3D bluray and still need to check it out. I wish the 3d version had the atmos that would be sweet.
I got the Gravity Diamond Luxe Edition back in 2015. I recently got Dolby Atmos and it sounds fantastic. An awesome home theater experience. And I’m glad they made it available again for everyone.
iTunes has had the Atmos mix since forever and several years ago they added Atmos audio to even HD movies if it was available, so BD movie codes I'd cashed in on Vudu that connected to iTunes via Movies Anywhere (e.g. Marvel movies) have Atmos; it's not walled off for UHD/4K only. I wish they'd remaster this into 4K with HDR because that would really make it pop. It'd be an upscale, but the HDR would be awesome on OLED.
If you have ever heard a disc vs streaming version with a sound system, you would never think a streaming option is even close to comparable. If you are using TV speakers it doesn't matter but it's obvious with a good sound system.
@@lucaslee1483 I agree that the disk version is better than the digital, but that is way too general of a comment. Some digital versions sound absolutely phenomenal. And if you don’t have the right provider, then you were doing it wrong. Apples iTunes provide significantly better streams than any other provider, which has been proven by several RU-vidrs, who actually analyze the data being pushed by the provider. For instance, Apple streams at nearly 4 times the bit rate as Amazon or RU-vid
@@wrthomas69 Yes, I'm not an Apple person, I have an Android phone but use Apple for anything streaming because of that. I believe that only applies to video quality, not sound. No streaming service offers lossless audio, only compressed, which IMHO may be a bigger difference in quality disc vs streaming. Most people won't care, but I can definitely tell the difference.
I couldn't find a the atmos version for years till I came across Spanish version that wasn't the diamond luxe edition that had atmos and was in English dialog with the cover only being in Spanish.
I think I paid like 30 on ebay. Never got around to opening it. Sold for maybe 60. few years ago. Ordered the new copy as I'm a bit more confident in my setup
I don't think so. I bought the diamond luxe blu ray edition at Best Buy at $30 ten years ago. People, you should grateful that it's available again on physical media at $16. Buy it before it"s extinct.
That’s funny though, they’re talking to each other with microphones in their helmets, so his voice wouldn’t actually be moving around you. But it’s still cool sounding. Just ordered it using your link anyway, even though I already have the 3-D Blu-ray
I remember when Gravity came out…. The film makers were promoting the acute attention to the physics. Uh, yeah… I mean no. The movie takes quite a few liberties. Similar to The Martian, where some of the physics are a bit comical.
Yeah I was waiting for Atmos version of this for years… but now I think I’ll wait for 4K Atmos version. I do have it in 3D and that makes it even better. Crazy they kept the 3D and Atmos versions separate.
So many 3D blu rays do not feature the Atmos soundtrack but the 2D bundled with it did. Frustrating! I wonder if it is anything to do with disc capacity?
@@kylieman2010 not sure because Mad Max Fury Road, and both TMNT movies have the Atmos with the 3D, not sure if they used a bigger disc capacity or not
Received mine and watched this morning. All I can say is, I've watched a lot of movies in ATMOS and I cannot recall the last time I enjoyed an ATMOS track this much. Discrete use of height channels happens frequently. There are times the room is silent and then you hear a voice coming from the top right or left. Its very distinct. I love it. I also have Gravity in 3D. This film is a great 3D experience.
Annoyingly this apparently got a release in the UK several years ago but can't have been available for long as more recent ones had 5.1. Can find the odd copy on eBay and Amazon for around £45. Also annoyingly there's no link on Amazon Uk that takes you to this new release. I always thought that your own regional Amazon always offers that option to buy from another one?
Popped up on an importer retailer site last night. Went to order one this morning and it now says currently unavailable. Ugh. Being a UK collector is bloody awful now. We can't get hold of anything here easily now. THIS is how the studios force everyone towards digital eventually. 🤬
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Turns out I was able to order from the US site of a certain global retailer! It wasn't even showing on the UK one. Should be here in a few days. 😁 Still an effort to get one though! 🙄
I checked the case and the disc and there is no information about being region locked. It doesn’t say anything about it so I can’t tell if it is or isn’t.
I'm one of those idiots who did spend $250 last year to get the Delux edition. Is there any difference that you know of from this new Atmos and the one on the Delux addition??
I found the Atmos somewhat underwhelming, sounded about the same as ATV digital on my Trinnov. What I really miss was the 3D, since this was shot natively for it, and the immersion is insane, as one of the best implementations of 3D. But thanks so much for the heads up on this. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
3D is top notch. Still have 2 old LG E6 oled displays to make sure I can still enjoy my 3D collection. My Epson projector does a decent job with 3D, but the oled is unmatched. They really need to bring 3D back as a feature on new displays.
I bought the Diamond Luxe Edition a few years ago on eBay for $44. My friend is borrowing it right now. I've upgraded my system to 7.1.4 but haven't listened to it yet. Going to tell him about the Blu ray version.
So I am so glad you made this video because I two (like you and many others) have been waiting for this. I sat so many time with my finger over the buy it now button on eBay for the crazy price and never went through with it. So my question to you is if you can help me out I did buy this on Amazon sold from Amazon but when I received it today it looks a little Bootlegish the quality of the packaging and quality of the art looks cheap. So before I open it, does yours look the same because I’m a little nervous that I don’t have something genuine
Yeah the packaging is nothing special. It looks and feels like a typical blu ray. If Amazon was the seller you are most likely good. Thanks for watching!
I saw the other day too that the new one was coming out with atmos for about $16 on amazon. I wonder if this will make the diamond lux edition more valuable or less
@@willmahoney2452 i would think so too.....but maybe it might make it a collectors collectors Item hahahaha since it's the "original dolby atmos release" hahahahhaha who knows in this crazy world we live in! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like to order this one. So where can i order this gravity Blu-ray and is this region free? Because a live in Belgium. Waiting so long to get this movie with the atmos soundtrack, without paying a huge amount.
Got mine yesterday. Audio was good but man the picture was disappointing for a blu-ray. Most of the time when I e seen Blu-rays look pretty damn good when upscaled but this one looked pretty meh from a visual standpoint. Not sure if it’s the transfer or something to do with the heavy use of SFX
Holy crap i really hope this is in Atmos. I have been looking everywhere for this film. I just ordered the film through the US Amazon because I live in canada. Don't know If you guys know this but when Warner Bros released their 100 years or movies I can't remember. But they had gravity in the collect ion and I think that version was in 4K and atmos. Most of the movies or all where in 4K.
Cant speak for the atmos version as i dont have a set up. But Gravity is one of the very best 3D discs i have. I can fully imagine how good the audio can be at that immersion of the story based on what the visuals added.
As many have said below, the BEST way to watch this is in 3D with muxed Atmos. Once you have seen and heard it this way you will not want to go back to 2D, even in 4K.
