Bill canonically does not experience reality like humans do and doesn't have an interest in love. So aroace Bill. BUT Bill does seem to have a sense of... idk eldritch attraction? Bill desires companionship. But eldritch companionship is horror to a human. Ford is canonically not straight. 'plansexual' joke could either mean pan or aroace. Honestly what suprised me was that Fidds and Ford had something going on, that was a whole soap opera with fidds choosing to make Ford Xmas gifts, then leaving and getting into a fight with his fam bc fidd didn't make any gifts for his wife, then returning back to save Ford lol. Fidd def liked Ford, but idk if Ford liked Fidd the same way back. In the end, canon Billford to me plays a great story of Ford getting away from his abuser and managing to find safety and happiness with his family. That to me is a pretty powerful story. So while "old man yaoi" gets memed on, people ought to remember billford is not end game, but it is canon. It was toxic to drive the story forward, and did so in an interesting way imo. Ford is better off without Bill.

I used to be a billdip shipper as a kid and from my personal experience, even I preferred the wholesome aged up fanfiction rather than the age gap which I didn't see often. What's funny to me that going back to this Fandom, I no longer ship anyone but seeing billford become popular is my favorite things since it feels like a much better upgrade from what we did back then.

I think it's s probably because people are more inclined to self insert with characters that are around their age. As a young preteen/teenager, it's not like too likely that you'll see yourself in Stan or Ford, for example. So people attracted to Bill's personality (as was usually the case with animated villains on Tumblr) would just use Dipper in place of themselves, since it was a lot more taboo to ship yourself with fictional characters back then (arguably still is now to an extent). As they got older, and realized Ford was just Dipper but older, that ship just made more sense.

The first posted drawing of Alastor was at latest in January 2013 - 5 months before Bill first appeared in gravity falls. The characters originate from artwork viviziepop posted on her socials. She was planning to use them in a webcomic she was making at the time.

Generally I think a huge percentage of Billdip shipping was aged up to "That summer right after highschool/before college" or during or right after college. It always felt wierd to me when people would claim that it's still problematic to age up characters because their "only doing it to not get introuble for nsfw stuff" when maybe ya just like the pairing, like the characters, but don't want them in their cringe tween phase?

Besides the shipping I think a really big thing in the fandom was the Au's Specifically Reverse Falls and Monster Falls (i think the names are self explanatory) Immortal Pines was also something that seemed pretty big with some weird storytelling, but cool stories that could come out of it
I think it's important to remind people that, back then, when you were a kid, you weren't really thinking about age gaps nearly as much as we do today. Nowadays we're so obsessed with it we actually judge people based on how they make fictional characters interact on a side platform, but back then only dark fanart and dark fics were considering it, and the goal was often to treat it very seriously in those situations. Friendly reminder as well that some people use fiction as an outlet to talk about stuff they went through, and you won't necessarily know, and that you're never obligated to interact with it.
I hate how no one is considering that we were kids. We. Were. KIDS. We weren't thinking about the age gap or how terrible this ship was. It feels like the internet thinks we were pedophile adults back then.

I also shipped billdip but it was either platonic, aged up or aged down. I think I saw a tweet about this but another reason why this ship was so popular in its day was because of how most of the fandom identified with/saw themselves in Dipper and treated him more as a self-insert, since selfshipping was seen as more “cringe” or taboo in 2016 tumblr than it is today. Basically they just treated Dipper like an oc and projected their crush on the most tumblr sexyman-adjacent character in the show (again also due to the obscurity of Cipher’s age it was easier to treat him like an approachable bad-boy teen and not an ancient god of chaos like how he is in the show). I’m just glad the fandom has moved onto billford by know as that’s wwAAY more societally acceptable and has a better “toxic-ex” dynamic thanks to the Book of Bill :P As the fandom ages so do the popular ships.
Coming from the Transformers fandom, this reminds me a little bit of one of the weirdest things to come out of Transformers Prime. Shipping Jack Darby, a teen, with Arcee. Arcee being an ageless machine-woman who is millions of years old and is three times Jack's size. But she's undercover as his motorcycle, so the "rides her all over town" jokes write themselves.

bro it is so humiliating to admit that i ate this shit up when i was a kid but this video was so wild to see that i have to talk about it lol from ages 12-14 i read so much fanfiction of this ship on ao3 that left an imprint on me that i still remember the names and plots of my favorites. and i obviously don’t ship it or agree with it anymore because now i’m an adult with a working brain and moral compass, but i will say SC you’re awesome as always for giving the most thoughtful and nuanced takes. all the fanfiction or art i ever read or ran into had aged up dipper, and at least for me there was never actually that much faithfulness to the show. it kind of seemed like people took the basic idea of “gay enemies to lovers paranormal nerd x demon who messes with him,” slapped on a hot human form for the demon, and then went off the rails to make their own reimagining of the characters and story. i remember being super into the ship but never once when rewatching the show thinking “omg they’re so cute together” bc… no people will always love the fantasy of straight up toxic relationships because we have all these depictions of confident sexy abusers, or evil-to-good character growth caused by falling in love, so of course kids were projecting that onto these two

I was lucky that one of my sisters also loved this show. We would talk abt theories together sometimes especially if we heard some online. I do remember seeing one of the shorts that advertised and the one that I saw wasn’t very good it didn’t show all the good things that the show is capable of. It sadly made me think the show wasn’t going to be that good. Luckily during a vacation the first episode aired while watching TV and both my sister and I have it a chance. It showed that it’s a fun time and made us want to watch more. Then we become obsessed more as the plot progressed.
I mean that’s not really gonna hold up with a lot of people, regardless of what they ship, since a sizable chunk of the fandom doesn’t even like Mabel. I feel like you’d have more luck saying Alex Hircsh hates the ship.

I was a small child and now I'm turning 18 this year. A lotta people talk abut knowing how gross the ship was as a kid but for me, brains were brains. There were no difference and age didn't change the fact that. Of course, I've gone through a shit ton of life experience now and realize, yeah, age factors in a FUCK TON. Small children are very different to adults. Yeah I probably should have known that but I wasn't chronically online back then. I didn't assume everyone was an asshole. Now, I'm a proud Billford shipper but it's also because I got a copy of the Book of Bill. I did read stuff where Dipper was aged up tho. But I got out of that phase real quick before going onto ship enemies to lovers from an anime with two adults. And while I do agree Billford is in the same aura as Billdip, there's definitely a difference.

i think theres also something to be said about billdip shippers who project themselves onto dipper. like, having interest in unhealthy and manipulative dynamics has different connotations when one is projecting onto the victim than when one is projecting onto the manipulator.
I'm actually very glad you brought this up as I find it's far more common for people to assume they know who the shipper is relating to in the dynamic and judge based on that. Had a convo a few years back with someone who assumed adult shippers who enjoyed a certain ship between a teen and a... I dunno 40-somthing(?) was specifically relating to and projecting on the adult, the predator, the abuser because they couldn't comprehend that an adult could project onto anything but another adult, rather than seeing themselves in the groomed and manipulated teen. Now that could be a fascinating discussion regarding this ship if people weren't so immature reacting to it. Myself being ace, and having had NO experience with relationships, I think the main reason why I did really like this ship back in the day was the dynamic between the two. In a lot of fics, Bill almost became like a magic mentor to Dipper, which I found fascinating. The relationship bordered on "oh cute" to "oh mmm" and I think a lot of kids or preteens would like that sort of thing cause it can challenge their world view. Kids LIKE to be scared, it makes them feel brave at least coming from my own experience, I always felt better about myself having conquered some fear. And Bill can represent a lot of different fears since he's such an anomaly of a character. But mostly fear of the unknown. What we know to be right and wrong we experience through media after all. Along with our own experiences of course. Being exposed to such a ship like this, can be a good way for younger members of the fandom to be taught "hey it's okay if you like it, BUT here's why it can be problematic and here are some signs to watch out for if you are in this type of relationship." Sorry this got really analytical, but I think this ship can be studied in ways people aren't looking at and it should be looked at in an analytical way like any other ship Chorus looks at. I really hope he talks about Billford cause...WHOOOO boy. Big can of worms.

I think people in these comments are being a bit overdramatic. It's the dynamic plain and simple. Villain x hero is always going to be a hugely popular ship dynamic. Will the hero be able to redeem the villain, will the villain corrupt the hero, it's a 50-50. Will how unpredictable and chaotic Bill is, writing for him is probably pretty fun for fanfic writers.

I am truly baffled by the amount of people here who did not know about BillDip. I know the fandom is getting old but... wow, it's *old.* I got into it a year after the show ended, which I thought was late. But BillDip was still going strong at the time. It was by far the ship I saw the most fanart and fanfiction of, and I wasn't even trying to look for it.

Adding to that, I actually never shipped those two while watching the series, I only discovered the shipp after discovering the lack of BillxFord content that I wanted and was looking for, so I ended up giving into the BillxDipper fanfics. Either way, I don't think the personalities meant that much on the creation of this shipp; the writter leaned more into developing prompts and ideas than exploring the chemistry between the characters (BECAUSE THERE IS NO CHEMISTRY, I'M MENTALLY SCREAMING AT MY 11 YEAR OLD ME). Similar to what you said, but yandere Bill was not that commun, at least in the shameful long list of fanfics I've read. This are the plots I found more about, for anyone interested: -The Pines twins went back to Gravity Falls, but Mabel and/or the Grunkles acted horrible towards Dipper (Usually Mabel became popular in high school and started bullying Dipper). Dipper either went to Bill himself or accepted a deal with an approaching manipulating Bill, and along the story romantic feelings started to awake and Bill started to personally want revenge for Dipper (I also believe that this types of stories were the generators of most of the Mabel hatred, at least in the hispanic fandom, and we had this name for her, "Mab*tch") (AND, this ones do remind me a lot of the SebastianxCiel shipp) -Bill some way or another left most of his madness behind and they became a normal couple aside from the age gap. This also includes AU's were Bill is not a chaos lover demon and an actual somewhat normal human being -Bill is Bill but even more sadists and he either wants revenge on Dipper or wants to hurt Stanford so he kidnaps him. No romantic feelings unless the author was merciful enough to give him Stockholm syndrome. Bill wants to experiment with his human form. Honestly, some of this stories barely even had...that, and I'm still traumatized with a couple of them that I can actually name and recap. 11 year old me discovered a lot of things with this kind of stories that she probably shouldn't have So...yeah, except for the yandere Bill part, I think this video is pretty on point
Yeah agree but I was there too and there was suprisingly not a lot of "Yandere Bill" Billdip(less than 50 in the total 4,500 fic on Ao3 and that's not even mentioning the quality though I did filter out non-english fics.). As a lover of Yandere ship Fanfics this was somewhat disappointing but then I realized that there were other dynamics to be explored between the two and I was sated.

I didn't hear about this ship until two years after the show ended. My friend and I were in line for lunch, and I showed her some of my human Bill art, and she just casually mentions how she ships Bill x Dipper and I looked at her like she was crazy lol.

Actually, the human variant art of Bill Cipher, the big smile, the cape, the cane, the wide eye, that was created way before the pilot of hazbin hotel was even out. Alastor and what (most) people see human Bill as, look similar just out of coincidence.
When I was a kid, I did in fact ship BillDip. As an adult, I've now realized the actual comedy and thematic genius of BillFord. Top tier ship. Also, would love to hear your thoughts on the Reverse AU because I feel like that's a whole other can of worms LMAO
