Part 3 of Digging a tunnel from my underground bunker to my house, themed on the great escape.

In addition the base section is deficient structurally; due to order of position and means of transferring the veetical and horizontal loadings to this member. Look at the member placement for coal mine tunnels.

Many years ago, I read about a clever system to ensure an air supply in the case of a tunnel collapse. You run a sturdy hose from the entrance of the tunnel up to where you're working. In the event of a collapse, you can still breathe through the hose until help arrives or you manage to dig your way out. Even in the event of a multiple collapse that cuts off the end of the hose, and you’re trapped in both directions, you can simply cut the hose at any point in the tunnel and still get air. I suppose you could rig up something more substantial using large diameter plastic plumbing pipe. Maybe drill holes along its length every foot or so, and seal them with duct tape or something. If you get trapped, rip the tape off the nearest hole so you can still get air. Might be a prident safety measure as the tunnel gets longer. Also, weld a roof with a "roll cage" onto that little cart so you're not instantly buried if there is a cave-in.

I’m hoping now with the reinforcement it won’t collapse, going to do some testing for part 4 😂

I’m so delighted to see someone able to assess risk and choose for themselves their risk responses. What I mean is, so often others believe that THEY should be in charge of others individual risk and dictate what the responses would be. However, a person who is allowed to be in charge of their own risk is much better able to process suggestions and information of others…than someone being forced. Stay free my UK brothers and sisters.

Dave, if you want to secure the soil after the tunnel sections are put in. Drill a hole in each section after assembly. Then spray in a can of cheap expanding foam, like "great stuff". This will fill in the voids and insulate the tunnel sections. And, the stuff is dirt cheap.
@Tornado_Dave
@Tornado_Dave 3 месяца назад
I was actually thinking of doing this but wasn’t sure, I like the idea and will get rid of that slight gap on top 😀
@mattycireland
@mattycireland 3 месяца назад
Good job adding the sections for reinforcement, but you'd still want to close the voids as mentioned. When we hand or machine mine tunnels, we grout after to prevent settlement and possibke collapse- I'd have a threaded port in the headtree and sill every 2nd or 3rd section. You can go back and grout the void using a thick cement grout mix. That would close the void and secure the tunnel from bowing. Check that the grout has travelled all around the annulus and you should be pretty solid (tap the sections with a hammer to check the void). In terms of air supply, good to see you're preparing the bag line. You can reduce it down from the larger size to a 4" hose (similar to a dryer vent) and hang inside. You'll definitely need it for air supply and to keep the temperature down. Get yourself a gas monitor while digging at the face - when the O2 levels drop & CO2 rises you can pass out fairly quickly! Always have someone in the shaft entrance in case the sh*t hits the fan. Be safe and have fun 😉

The only thing I can think of that will help later down the line with the water problem is to put a square rubber gasket on before you screw the sections together, it's one more step but as long as you have it in one square piece you may be able to get away with no future leaks when it rains, or water the yard. It doesn't matter how tight the sections are together, water will find it's way through if there's nothing to seal the water from getting in, and once the water gets through nothing can stop it from rusting in the future galvanized or not. Which means you or someone after you will have either a collapsed tunnel or a decaying tunnel that they'll either have to repair, dig up, or replace entirely. Now that I think about it if the outer layers were painted or coated with something besides just galvanized base metal you could make it potentially last even longer, but all the one's you put in will decay over time unless you pull them out individually and coat them. On average the steel will last 35-70 years, but if you coated them they could last even longer than that. I'm just thinking of how to make it last the longest, I've no idea what your future plans are but this is just my observation. I dropped a follow, looking forward to the next episode. Cheers mate.
@Tornado_Dave
@Tornado_Dave 3 месяца назад
If it lasts 35 years it will do me 😀i can’t see me going down the tunnel after I’m 77. I thought about different options but it would be very hard to seal, so would rather it drained through it. Glad your liking it, next one out on Friday 😀

In response to your comment about piping cold air in, and whether that'll lead to condensation... Moisture condenses when warm moist air comes into contact with cold things. If you had air forced from outside, being piped into your tunnel, assuming the tunnel was warm and being "lived in" (hot mammals breathing inside it), I would not expect that to cause condensation. If you look at Colin furze' tunnel, he has a vent stack which emerges just under the roof of his lean-to. He gets condensation on the metal roof directly above that stack. I guess depending on the design, that could drip water back down the stack into his tunnel, but otherwise, and depending on the design, I think it should be OK. I suppose that could lead to condensation inside the shelter over your well entrance, but I don't think it would make your tunnel wet. Also, cold air is not able to hold as much moisture as warm air - that's why it rains at the west coast, when the warm moist air above the Atlantic gets pushed up to higher (colder) altitude when it reaches land. But, given the topology of your setup, I guess you'd need to be careful not to provide a "drainpipe" down which water could flow if the outside exposed part of the pipe got cold and suffered condensation. Perhaps like a u bend and a drain hole / plenum chamber before the duct enters your bunker?

Since there is hardly anything supporting the sides and roof of the tunnel, does he have a contact or 2 who knows that if he does not contact them in a certain time frame that they should go and try to rescue him should a cave in occur ? Because can see the support for the tunnel is extremely flimsy, and the soil with water is wet - corrosive - heavy - and could easily cause a cave in.

It still worries me a bit Dave sorry mate it really is a life or death decision. If you die it means no more videos lol. The miners used great big timbers and end ways they have a massive crushing force. I have been doing ground works for years and I have seen the crushing force behind unstable ground. It’s untested really. I guess when the cavities above your frames self compact it will be safer. Could you strength test one section just to see how it performs. I know they all work together but testing one might instil a bit of confidence.
