In Episode #107, we plan carefully our next leg on the inside route... in the NJ ICW. Many say to never go inside but we decide to give it a try and have a convoy of boaters with us. Watch the full episode to see if we make it!
(Recorded May/2023)
Thank you for watching!😎

Glad to see you made it. That area is where we boat every weekend, going from Mullica River, across Great Bay, and into Absecon Inlet. Have seen many boats go just a tad outside the channel and get grounded. Good luck on remainder of your trip

Gas up there today. Our water is a bit shallow at times but it’s a great area. Safe travels

Y'all made it through the shallow water! Y'all are some good navigators! Hope you have good cruising waters for the rest of your adventure.

Thanks TMac, we were very happy to make it through this part of the NJ ICW. Stay tuned for the next jump out into the Atlantic Ocean.😎

Always take the outside route from Atlantic City to manasquan because the contour of the bottom in that area changes about every 4-5 miles. If you don't time your run with the start of high tide,most likely you'll get grounded. But within 3 miles of shore in the Atlantic is the same thing up and down or rolling contour the continental shelf drops off about 6 miles out.

Thanks for sharing Stephen. We found that with good planning we were able to make this journey safely and without incident. This is the only part of the NJ ICW that we would attempt the inside route. For a boat with a deeper draft, we would only recommend going outside in the Atlantic. Thanks for watching😎

Thanks for visiting from Beachwood NJ. Curious why you chose Manasquan inlet over Barnegat to get to Pine Beach? We had an inboard with a 3 1/2 foot draft and ran that section regularly. No problems if you follow the markers.

Hey JP, we chose Manasquan simply to stay on the inside during bad weather (at that time) and get as far north as possible. What an interesting part of the Great Loop… thanks for watching!😎

Thanks DB, we agree! It’s been a drama free Great Loop and I think it’s safe to say a bit of luck but mostly lots of planning. Thanks for following our journey!😎

I watched this episode with great interest. I'm planning a passage from the Chesapeake to Canada next spring and found your experience on the NJ ICW very informative. I believe your boat draws 3'9" right? Mine draws 3'10" so virtually identical nervousness in skinny waters.

Thank you John and glad you found this episode helpful. Yes Stay Cool has a draft of 3’-9” so virtually identical to your 3’-10”. We were advised to go on a half tide and rising and for the trouble spots, we learned they are often marked with buoys (sometimes going outside the channel). It definitely was nerve-racking in certain areas. A bit of good planning and a bit of luck. Thanks for watching John and good luck transiting this area next spring!😎

This is a great and informative video! Now that you have done the northern NJ ICW - what are your thoughts on the southern NJICW (between Cape May and Atlantic City) if trying to avoid rough weather in the Atlantic? Could the same half tide and rising strategy you used on the northern be used there?
@staycool123
@staycool123 Год назад
Hi Patrick, after learning more about the NJ ICW from a good friend who knows this waterway well and from fellow loopers, we only recommend doing the portion from Atlantic City to the Manasquan Inlet. The southern part from Cape May to Atlantic City is too shoaled and unpredictable to attempt to go the inside route with our draft of 3’-9”. We know it means waiting for the right weather window to go outside but based on what we learned we wouldn’t go inside. If your draft is more shallow maybe you could do it. Thanks or watching!😎

What is the deepest water you have been in on this trip? Was it crossing the the Bahamas? Or maybe when you cut across the Gulf? Just curious.
@staycool123
@staycool123 Год назад
Good question Ben! The deepest water we crossed on the Great Loop was crossing to West End, Bahamas at over 2000 feet, so deep out depth sounder couldn’t read it! Thanks for watching.😎
