Some sweet RV mattress choices, important tips to prevent mold/mildew & important tips about the wooden platform the mattress sits on.
Our Zinus Green Tea, RV mattress is made with a Cooling Gel & Green Tea-infused Memory Foam and it gives you a perfect temperature-regulated sleep. This is our 3rd RV mattress and is the best RV mattress we’ve slept on.
When you have a mattress in your house you generally don’t have to worry about mold or mildew growing under the mattress because in a house, your mattress usually sits on a box spring bed frame and is able to breath properly.
Traveling in different areas-especially in hot, or humid climates like in the south, moisture can get trapped between the plywood & the mattress. This can also be very problematic if your one of those that uses your RV periodically & the rest of the time it sits locked up in storage somewhere. Moisture being trapped under the mattress can also happen in the winter time when you’re heating the RV when it’s cold outside and now your fighting condensation. These two hot and cold temperatures colliding under the mattress can cause mold and mildew. To solve this moisture problem between the bottom of the mattress & the plywood bed platform you need to install a breathable underlay.
We used Den-Dry Mattress Underlay to allow our RV mattress to breath properly. This mattress moisture barrier will prevent mold and mildew from happening in the first place.
I’m also going to cover how I insulated under the RV wooden platform, the piano hinge that allows you to raise and lower the bed platform for storage and finally the gas struts that attach to the RV wooden platform itself.
Joanie and I use a regular Queen fitted sheet on the mattress, a king size flat sheet for the top and a king size comforter.
Joanie doesn’t buy sheet sets. She’ll buy these individually so everything matches and we have plenty of material on us at night time. I’m a tall guy. So being 75” inches tall in a 80” Queen bed regular sheet sets just aren’t quite big enough to cover me the way I like.
Mattresses are advertised for side sleepers, stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, back pain and on and on.
There’s Soft Mattresses, Firm Mattresses, Mattresses for those on a budget.
Some folks use a foam topper or a 100% natural latex mattress topper on what they already have.
Then there’s Sleep Number mattresses - I see a lot of people end up replacing their Sleep Number with a good quality foam mattress because they’re tired of pumping it up and dealing with leaks. One fella replaced his Sleep Number mattresses three times in four years. He finally went to a foam mattress.

We received our new Zinus 8” Mattress LAST WINTER. Not this winter. The Zinus Green Tea Mattress that we bought is in my Amazon Store in the “Mattress, Bedding and More” category www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet For the partnership with made with Mattress Insiders, they have other types of mattresses, custom mattresses, sizes, toppers, bedding and more. Be sure to use our dedicated link below to get the right mattress for you. They also run many discounts year round so be sure to look at the top of their website for any coupon codes. shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1525070&u=2975454&m=96524&urllink=&afftrack= Concerning the Den Dry I put under the mattress, The Gorilla tape idea to hold the Den Dry still and keep it from moving when we changed the linens or rotated the mattress didn’t work so well. So I borrowed one of those large, silver, hand grip staplers and stapled it to the wood platform. That worked fantastic. I didn't mean to imply is was easy but it can be done and I've seen it done several times. But your right, going to a heavier strut is a much better choice and easier for sure. I'm going to add this to my pinned comment at the top.

We love our sleep number mattress and maybe one day, we'll get one for our Class A, queen size bed. I could see putting down a "breather" pad first, before laying a sleep number mattress on that wood, seams, piano hinge... There's places that would eventually pinch and cause leaks.

I switched to a Zinus Green Tea 12" king in the house about 5 years ago, and an 8" green tea short queen in the Winnebago about 2 years ago, and have been more than happy. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it has cured my back pain. I do wish I had gone with the 12" in the RV to be a little less firm, but I also have a wardrobe that I wanted to be able to open with the slide closed. The prices are now double what I paid, but I would still do it again with no second thought. I was not aware of the moisture issue, so I'll check that out. Thanks!

Thank you for the video. Great information and recommendations. We live in Arizona, so moisture has never been problem inside the coach., but during our recent trips to the southeast states we had to use a dehumidifier. The under bed liner is a great idea, even for the desert southwest. I also never thought about insulating the bed platform. Again, excellent ideas! Thank you

Just this yr my wife and I picked up a new mattress. We found out on our first camping trip in the rv. That the dealer switched out the nice big thick factory mattress. For a thin torn stained used mattress. Needless to say, we were not happy. So, hence the new mattress. Custom made because it needed a hinge. So I sent them the measurements and they Custom made us one. But, Custom mattresses are not refundable. . . Ours is great. Not cheap. . . 8" gel mattress insiders. Queen. Luxury model if I remember correctly. 🤪

FYI, we have den dry and found moisture on top of the plastic squares and underneath. However our king bed is on a slide above the plastic storage areas...30 foot class A. It is a flip mattress so it gets folded up to have slide come in. We periodically have to flip the head end of mattress up to air it out underneath, run dehumidifier, propane and electric heat. SO, we did not adhere den dry to the plywood/fake wood beneath it. We have not removed the plywood base of bed (head part)...bottom part is chock full of electronics...

you could make you bed base more breathable by cutting it into a slatted form with a jigsaw, or put rows of holes in it with a spade bit - it would reduce weight in the RV too

I put a 1.5in topper on my half of our mattress because my husband likes a firm one so he enjoys the bamboo mattress that came in our camper but it's too firm for me. When it comes time to change it out we'll get the two twins to he can get a firm one and I can get a soft one.

Hi Martin, another great video, thanks so much. We just installed our Mattress Insider 8" Short King mattress and Den Dry underneath and will report back on how our first sleep goes in a couple of weeks. Quick question for you - have you found a good source for RV size comforters? I can find linens no problem, but all the comforters I can find are regular king size, so way too big. I'm at the point of ordering one and having an alteration shop trim it to fit. Any wisdom you can pass on is greatly appreciated!
@RVstreet
@RVstreet Год назад
Well no real wisdom but I have some in my Amazon store that comes in multiple sizes in the " Mattresses, Bedding and More" category. You could also go to Amazon using my link and then search for what you're looking for on Amazon, put it in the cart and check out. www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet Or, have you tried a regular retail store like BedBath & Beyond? I'm sure you can find something out there that doesn't require a alteration shop.
