On March 5, 2013, The Frumkes Center for Writing and Culture welcomed Edward Witten, theoretical physicist and the Charles Simonyi Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, to Hunter College.
This event was part of our larger Best-Selling Author & Great Thinker lecture series, which includes a speaker talk, Q&A session, and reception with book signings and free refreshments.

Witten is a Mathematical Physics GIANT. He did foundational fundamental work on the math of String Theory.

He's a giant fool! Why would he throw his career down the drain wasting all that scientific talent on falsifiable "string theory"?

You neglect to mention that string theory is entirely bullshit and the biggest waste of time and money in the history of science. Whenever you hear Witten's name, you hear about all of the insanely speculative and fantasy-based crap that has stalled legitimate physics research for decades.

@boogieman6529 there is no theory of everything. Just like there is no unified field of math. One day we will prove that the universe is a bunch of non consistent set of games with their own rules... and it's just nonsense... and us trying to figure it out is pointless. I have an equation of a spring... or an apple falling or light beams flying.... those systems have no connection. The loss of information is called entropy People say they are looking for symmetry.... a super symmetry.... something that existed before the big bang..... but..... it was LOGIC itself that broke.... No way to unify my friends.

Evidently a physicist did not record this video, as he/she would have (probably) been aware enough of the nature of photons to set the proper exposure for the projection screen, rather than the Dr. Witten (& the audience). Similar to a Zoom conference of scientists/engineers being degraded by (at least one of) them being unable to operate their device(s) (which, ironically, they may have had a hand in inventing) so they can take part in the group discussion.

He resembles so much Sheldon Cooper, both in the astounding intelligence and in personality, they even research exactly the same field. As a matter of fact, in the fictional universe Sheldon was never an undisputed number 1 in string theory, whereas Witten is; Witten is THE guy for the string theories and he has unified them, implying that he is even smarter than Sheldon. I'm surprised Witten was never mentioned in the show, almost as if it's because Sheldon is supposed to be his equivalent in the BBT show, or maybe it's because of this aura of seriousness that Edward Witten has, that it was considered inappropriate to make references to him in a comedy show.

String Theory, Super Symmetry (SUSY), M Theory are wrong and experiments have put them to rest. Gravity is not a Force and therefore Gravity will never be Quantum. Nothing new has been added to theoretical physics since Planck, Einstein and Dirac. Witten is highly over-rated.
@intelligentspeculator7327
@intelligentspeculator7327 Год назад
As a layman, I'm confused about what you say about the tests. I thought the problem was precisely that you can Not make tests for the string theory, that it is virtually unverifiable and unfalsifiable. Are you saying that there Have been tests that disproved the string theory?
@buca512boxer
@buca512boxer Год назад
He's a mathematical power house, but a poor physicist who cares more about his ego & dumping his failed string theory on us (which has proven to be nowhere), than he does about observation, experimentation and indubitable proof. There, said it.

@@spinav8r Because it's pointless. Even if everything claimed about string theory is true....so fucking what? In what way would it change anyone's life, for better or worse? What possible use would it be to anyone? None, whatsoever. It's a physicists' circle jerk. No more, no less - but one they use to grift taxpayer-funded research grants. It's the greatest con in science, and they've milked it for over half a century.

I Have Long Regarded Edward Witten As A Genius In Mathematics ; But . . . . I Must Say That He Should NEVER GIVE LECTURES Because He Is Utterly Difficult, If Not IMPOSSIBLE, To Understand. If He Wants To Give Lectures He Should Learn To SPEAK CLEARLY So As To Be UNDERSTOOD By Those Who Are Listening To Him. After-All, He Is Not Explaining Something Out of A "NOVEL" . . . . . There Is No Other Way For Me To Say This . . . . . . HE IS AN UTTERLY HOPELESS TEACHER. He Should Stick To Writing Books, Whereby He Would Have Lots of Time To Go Over What He Is Trying to Explain To The Reader, and Thus Pick-Up His Mistakes And Make Himself A Lot Clearer In What He Is Endeavouring To Impart Onto His Listeners. You May Have Recognised The Man With White Hair Sitting On The Left Front, Who Asked Edward Witten The Brilliant Question, "IF STRING THEORY HAS MANY SOLUTIONS, THEN IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIND A UNIQUE SOLUTION THAT WOULD EXPLAIN OUR UNIVERSE, OR DOES IT ALTERNATIVELY MEAN THAT THERE ARE MILLIONS OF UNIVERSES ? ? ? ? " --- The Man With The White Hair Who Asked THAT Brilliant Question Was Physicist Professor MICHIO KAKU.
