crazy genX it's wild how smart he is too, he didn't even study physics initially in college, he undergrad is actually in history, in was when he went back to do a masters that he just switched to physics/mathematics bc he was already able to do that level of mathematics by the end of high school hence why he tried history first... just wild! There are very few ppl who have such a natural fraps of advanced mathematics and subsequently physics like he does, he really is one of the best out there today, he will must assuredly be remembered even if string theory doesn't pan out, even if it is wrong it has helped the physics community look and see physics in new ways which have been crucial to pushing the community forward to solve unification between QM and GR. And yeah I agree with what you have to say as well, not that I know anyone personally that knows him, but just from all his interviews and lectures he does come off as quite a humble nice guy, definitely idiosyncratic but I can't imagine someone at that level not being in some manner. Its difficult to win a Nobel prize in physics because you have to work on a problem that can be verified through experiment and has to be done before you die. Witten is into string theory, which can't be tested at the current moment given our understanding of the theory. It is a very ambitious theory.

With due respect to the organizing committee, why was this lecture not held in a big auditorium with better audio-visual capabilities? Or even at a large university...
