In this weeks' video I share another typical beach scene from Southern California. A shark comes very close to two surfers who have no idea it is there.
We also examine the extra two senses great white sharks possess and explore a recent study suggesting that sharks may navigate using Earth's electromagnetic field.

I have been an avid shark love since I was 8 yo. I would read every book I could put my hands on, but through many decades of reading I have never experienced as many amazing revelations as I have through your channel. FINALLY, the truth about sharks have been revealed. They’re not monsters or brutish eating machines. They are beautiful and clever creatures worthy of protection. Well said but I think there's a difference in that the Malibu Artist sharks are in the main, juvenile ones. Some of those huge ones off Guadelupe island and Australia might not be as shy as these here. I don't know though and I'm guessing that even the huge, fully grown ones are not that interested in humans or there would be thousands of attacks every year. It would be interesting to see if there is the same level of shark activity off popular, tourist beaches as there is in the Malibu Artists ones.

Same here. I would copy all the different styles of sharks with a pencil. I had a great book that showed all the different species. Being a southern Cali surfer and fisherman helped my love for these animals.

Bruh these are all juvenile whites they don't go after big prey yet they can't physically there jaws don't have full range of motion to open all the way that's why they hunt sting rays etc as juveniles...go jump in the water with a 14 footer see how that goes ..sharks swim and eat they are top predators and will bite yo ass anyone who thinks diff in naive ..go set up a tent in the serringhetti and see how long it takes for a lion to eat ur ass that's what top predators do .

When I first started watching your videos a year or so ago my heart used to be in my throat whenever the sharks were approaching the humans - I just couldn't get that deeply ingrained fear out of my head (thanks to the portrayal of sharks in movies and on the news etc) that sharks approaching meant it would ATTACK. It has been a humbling and beautiful journey going from that deep fear and morbid fascination - to a new perspective instead - appreciating their beauty, watching them peacefully glide past us hundreds of times and learning other parts of their existence other than just their attacks. It's been truely awesome, thank you.

I find movement a good indicator of whether a shark is in a committed Attack/predatory mode or just Cruising with curiosity. Other marine lifes behaviours are great indicators of whether an active threat is in the Vicinity.

Excellent footage and commentary. Your analysis and deep appreciation for these apex predators is truly unique. I have been lucky enough to cage dive with these magnificent animals in Gansbaai in Cape Town. Thank you for your work and spreading the word about Great Whites. Thank you, what a great insight and a flip on the general "hype or catastrophization" of a shark presence near humans. Sharks are not villains, they are just co-existing and responding to their environment. I agree with the theory of the magnetic field, as the same question has been asked about migratory birds. I just love sharks.

I saw a video a while back comparing two coral reefs. One looked barren, desolate, dead. There were 2 tiny fish as the cameraman swam closer but that was it. The other coral reef was alive with color, activity. There were small schools of fish kinda grouped together like micro bait balls along with all types of other fish that were more solitary in nature...and sharks. The narrator said something about how the fishermen of the area killed or drive off all the sharks from that first reef, effectively killing it. Sharks are a good thing, they help to maintain a healthy balance in the seas. Without that balance, things tend to die off.

We need to be re-educated about what we fear & this is a great step in that direction. Fearful behavior attracts the worst in any species; man being the worst of preditors. We signal fear with the release of feremones & frenetic movement. Seeing vids like this in real time with no slant on what we're seeing eases our fears by relating to what we fear. There is nothing more powerful than familiarity. It comforts us & allows us to be more rational about our experiences no matter what we're faced with. This piece is of great service to everyone.

@2:37 Ok, if that guy had fallen in the water in a canal in Australia's swan river, that would have signaled a Bull shark of any size above 5ft to come in and bite since that species of shark is honed in on splashes like that through their basic instinct, and will bite ANYTHING that falls in the water near it. (See the recent attack that took the life of the young jet skier) In our little corner of ocean here on the west coast between Oceanside and Malibu, the little guys generally will not investigate big splashes like that since it might be a bigger fish/mammal than it can handle. Quite the opposite, the shark might even tend to swim AWAY from a big splash like this when they are under 8-9ft. If that shark would have been a sub adult in the 10-12ft range @4:11 (those size sharks are in the areas of Malibu, people should be aware of this) it may have been more inclined to investigate that splash.

Such a beautiful and educational video, ty! I could watch hours of your videos. I just read an article about plans for ocean floor mining of elements that will be used in electric vehicles. I was shocked as the article, Wired Magazine, showed huge apartment sized vehicles that have motions mechanisms like those on army tanks, and will destroy everything in it's path. We haven't even found solutions for the plastic islands and the microscopic breakdown of plastics that is now being found in all fishes that we eat. Now let's proceed with finding new and worse ways to destroy our ocean habitats. Corporations will put profits above all else, we must vote and protest and remain aware in order to protect our oceans and therefore amazing creatures therein.

Awesome shot. I bet that surfer would have 💩 his pants if he only knew how close a white shark came to him. But he wasn't in any kind of immediate danger because that shark clearly wasn't that interested in him. Also, a sharks electro sensory organs are called the ampullae of lorenzini. They are tiny jelly filled pores on a sharks snout. That's what all those tiny dots on a sharks snout are. And, your not wrong about the electrical cables from wind farms. Sharks have been seen biting underwater electrical cables. It's because they can sense the electromagnetic field emmitted by cables bleeding into the water. Overall, some awesome footage.🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

Love your videos. We, humen, have natural fear of unknown. Maybe sharks can sense the fear. If they go after animals that send distress signal, maybe sharks are simply trying to help them to end their pain. As human evolve, when fear turns to love, i hope there will be no accidental attack from sharks. Sharks have very important roles in the ocean life cycle and food chain. Many misunderstand sharks

Decades ago I watched video of sharks in a particular area (I don't remember where; Faralon Islands, or South Africa maybe) that showed the same group of White Sharks showing up near each other daily. It was like if you found one, you wait a few minutes and one or two others (the same ones each time) would swim into view.

Hey mate I am a fan of your vids, listening to the commentary on this vid made me wonder what do you think resulted in the fatal attack last year in NSW Australia on Simon Nellist , I’m a believer in mistaken identity in this instance, would be curious to hear your thoughts please. I love your videos. Some very interesting points raised in this one. Could I ask,do you think Great Whites are present in British/Irish waters? Its a question causing much debate. Osearch postponed their visit to the UK/European waters and everyone,interested in the marine environment,is chomping at the bit to find out. Just wondered about your opinion.

Reminds me of a similar circumstance, I was surfing with a neighbor at Sunset Point on the NorthShore of Oahu a few years ago. I was surfing on a SUP but my friend was on a longboard. I was getting warm waiting for the next set so I handed him my paddle and dove in to cool off. I opened my eyes and I’m looking face to face at a midsized tiger shark maybe 4 or 5 feet in front of me. The only one more in shock than me was the shark, Luckily he must have taken my dive as an act of aggression so he took off instantly. I probably inadvertently saved my friend’s foot (or leg).
