My Quest to Find Sharks in a Lagoon Becomes Incredible Experience

Recently, I was invited to San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, Mexico by my friends at Nautilus Liveaboards and Baja Expeditions. While the lagoons are the only place on Earth where Gray whales approach you, on their own accord, I went on a quest to find sharks as well. This is part 1 of that quest. It's safe to say, the whales took the spot light!
Special Thanks to Baja Expeditions & Nautilus for this magical opportunity and to Allie Vautin for filming me on the boat!

I almost always cry when I see videos of people interacting with whales - something about a feeling that we have been kicked out of Eden but we did it to ourselves. Beautiful, sad, I'm not sure.

We can never truly know the mind of another person, let alone another creature but I get the impression the grey whales enjoy these interactions. I didn't notice you feeding or manipulating the encounters in any way which further highlights that point. Carlos, you've outdone yourself. This is an extraordinary episode and I thank you sincerely for sharing it with me down here in autumnal and thundery Aotearoa-New Zealand. _Ka nui te mihi_ (thanks so much)

I don't think I could physically make the trip over land, sea and air, I get seriously sea sick without medicine. It just wouldn't be the same. Thank you for letting me experience it vicariously through your wonderful vids, narrative and drones! I've always thought I'd be a boat person and ocean dweller until I got motion sickness in a kayak, on the Hudson river, from a passing motor boat's tiny waves. I was sick for hours after. I could hardly drive home. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I could never understand how greed envelopes the hearts of people so much that they hunted these magnificent creatures to almost extinction. Especially once you look into their eyes and hear their mournful cries and realize how human they can be. The whales also come in close to the shore in Palos Verdes for the same reasons: scrape the shallow sands to get rid of the barnacles...it is amazing to take a drone off the cliffs there and see them.

I was lucky enough to have a similar experience in 1984, when a mother humpback whale and her calf approached our sailboat in Cape Cod Bay. It's a stunning experience when a whale spyhops you, and you stare into that huge eye. It was equally mindblowing that she trusted us enough to allow her baby to approach us and gaze at us from just a few feet away. Too bad we can't post the pics here on YT.

Now you have found your calling. Your excellent drone skill should go far beyond the limited scenes of Southern California juvenile Great White messing around near beaches. Go on a whale watch or fishing party boat, take far more drone shots of hundreds of marine animals which ordinary people can not see. When I was on these boats, I have encountered many whales, dolphins, surface sharks, marlins, etc. but if I had a drone camera I could had very close video shots of these animals. Good work. 🤔😉😎

@@TheMalibuArtist you’re welcome. I’m trying to learn too. I was chased by a 7 ft black tip reef shark on the outer reef of the Great Barrier Reef off Townsville. Clear, deep water that I just got off the step into. I was snorkelling alongside the boat for 5-10 seconds and looked right and the shark was coming straight from the ocean floor straight at me. I got to the boat steps quickly. I’ve always wondered would it have bitten me or given me a nudge? Glad I didn’t find out 😂 If you have time, are you able to tell me please?
