Great White Sharks at One of LA's Busiest Beaches

This week, I filmed a few white sharks just a mile from the Santa Monica Pier.
Author/Journalist, Adam Skolnick, a routine swimmer in the area, invites me to fly my drone near him as he makes his morning swim. Not to my surprise, I find a juvenile white shark in the vicinity. This is a slight change to my presentation this week. If you have a beach you'd like me to explore, let me know in the comments.
Special thanks to Adam for inviting me out!

True but global warming has moved seals up to Cape Cod & Martha's Vineyard. Never ever saw seals right off the beach until 5 years ago. They don't want us but they test to see if we're fat enough. I don't mind but I don't swim with the few seals who show.

It's almost seal season in the Farrallon islands off San Francisco. Would be curious to see what you would see when it's only adult sharks hunting seals and other behaviour. Your videos are amazing as they really help take the negative rep these amazing sharks have.
@ericmailander3361

Different white shark behavior at Farallons. They are all adults feeding and hunting from the bottom and almost never observed at surface unless they caught a sea lion or elephant seal. And it's a no fly-zone.
@CYCO88tv
@CYCO88tv 3 года назад
@@ericmailander3361 oh im aware of the difference between LA Coastline whites and Farallons. Just interesting no matter what behavior one can observe if any at all is amazing. This channels footage is amazing to watch since growing up at these beaches its mind blowing to see and confirm i wasnt seeing things when i thought i saw a fin cruising the surface just at the edge of the surf all those times. With how grounded these videos are and they feel like you are more listening to a friend than a random person a place like the Farallons or Isla Guadalupe would be very interesting places to see drone footage from just because we would get to see adult behavior which yes not seen as much on the surface but when it is would be interesting to see how the mannerisms change compared to the juveniles.

Great stuff. I now take comfort in the fact that my fat ass is on dry land for good. They all seem friendly enough, but if they are hungry, they will eat you, and there isn't much you will have to say about it. They don't always just chomp and run. Sometimes they eat. Don't sharks mistake swimmers etc for food source? Whilst I don't believe sharks attack for the sake of it, its unreasonable to assume swimmers particularly children are safe out in the water. One bite can de flesh or amputate a limb causing fatal haemorrhage before rescue.

I think it is wonderful how the malibu artist has gathered all this data and has entered the scientific world on his on accord due to his interest in drone operation. His narration is classic. His technique and editing are good and getting better. i like the "light" music when he is videoing GWS rather than the predator dark music. I think he is becoming aware of the Ocean and realizing how diverse life is there. He should come up to Santa Cruz and Ano Nuevo Bay to document GWS locations and behavior here.

My heart goes out to you about the randos asking a bunch of questions like you are preventing them from their day. You have a lot of patience. I have an ORU kayak and I don’t know anything more about that tv show with the billionaires other than it exists and only because of the questions. People like that older gentleman on the crosswalk will often ask me questions in an aggravated manner, as if I stepped into their path to force them to talk to me. I really think your channel does some great work reframing these mythical creatures. I think it’s so awesome that you started this as a hobby, I assume I watch the videos but I don’t know the whole story. Usually it’s someone with a degree and they are really trying to get people to understand the importance of said wildlife, which is great. It’s just so cool to me that you sort of fell in love with these them and are often as surprised and if not more than your viewers. I was genuinely shocked to learn that the sharks hangout with the dolphins as I thought they were mortal enemies for the 20 years everyone was surprised to learn that dolphins can kick a great white’s ass. It’s a journey. Thanks for this channel!

I live in Yonkers, NY (a suburb of NYC in Westchester County) and when I go to the beach on Long Island, I generally go to Robert Moses Beach which is about 15 miles east of Jones Beach -- both being east of Manhattan. Recently, there have been many shark sightings and they have pulled swimmers out of the later. Fortunately, this never happened while I was there! We have seen helicopters patrolling the sky watching for sharks in the waters. One of the Jones Beach Lifeguards even thought he was bitten by a shark. I have not heard any more about it though. I would feel a lot safer if I knew there were people like you with drones, helping to keep us safe. Come visit us in NY!

further north, there is the beach at Piedras Blancas that the 'overflow' from Ano Nuevo's breeding population of elephant seals 'hauls out'. And when I drive by nearly two decades ago, the seals were right on the beach and the beach was right off Coast Hwy 1. San Luis Obispo also has 'resident/transient' white sharks who hunt there. Some are full grown, and more than capable of 'tangling' with adult and sub adult elephant seals. However, I am not sure if they're part of the population that hunts at Ano Nuevo and the Farallones or not. Given the ocean is 'right there', it would probably be a good place to 'drone' too. Then again, an adult white shark probably won't spend too much time at the surface unless they're feeding. Ironically, I just returned from a short vacation to Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel and my hotel had a brochure for the Piedras Blancas rookery. In the next couple of months, the seasonal return of adult white sharks will happen and I'm sure Monterey/Santa Cruz and the rest of the central coast will be providing some fascinating spectacle.

Brilliant footage and editing 👏 Only a matter of time till one of these drones witnesses an 'attack'. Somebody's going to be on the receiving end of just what comes naturally to an apex predator, albeit being mistaken for a food source. Obviously, many people, despite being informed of what's actually lurking offshore, totally blasé with a "It will NEVER happen to me !" mindset. Maybe you should add a loudspeaker to the underbelly of the drone, just incase it's needed !

Another brilliant video, both videography and narration. Living in the southern hemisphere (South Africa), I am jealous seeing all those people on the beaches. It is rather cold here, well around 0°C (32°F) in the early morning to about 21°C (70°F) at midday, it is cold for us. Come on summer!

I would like it if you would explore, Jupiter Beach & Juno Beach! Now, the second beach, I'm not really sure if that is how they spell it. I am pretty sure that is where my Sister & Nephew like to swim. They live in Jupiter. I live in MO. This is from memory! Lol! I will share your videos with her. Thank you, so much for the wonderful, beautiful, & interesting videos! Keep up the good work! And investigation!

I'm a lifeguard for the County and I have worked almost all beaches in the area, including Will Rogers. Please come down to Redondo/Torrance beach. You will not be disappointed. There is more marine mammal activity in those waters than any place I've seen in the region. The dolphins put on a show almost every day and I believe I have recently spotted a white shark. It was a beautiful fish.

Definitely need to scope out the coast line of Folly Beach in James Island, SC! We have tigers (Nursery recently found near the Morris island light house), Whites, bulls, dolphins/porpoises etc… depending on the season.

Well as always a great learning session for me. I’ve been watching since the beginning when there was about 50 of us subs. And now look at ya. You deserve a million more. Great work and content. PS just got an Air 2S and loving the cameraman it. I know you a good drone now but this is easy and quick to throw in the air. Just a thought.

A few comments have mentioned Farrallon islands and its mostly larger adult Great Whites, how their activity may not be the same as elsewhere. I've had a few very close encounters over the years surfing nearby. At Duxbury Reef, Bolinas on many occasions. GWs are visible from the bluffs above Agate Beach, RCA Beach as well, especially when it's they're hanging around at the Farrallon Islands At Ft Point many years ago, six or seven people out and there was a somewhat long break between sets, a GW 15-20, was heading into the bay. It wasn't interested in us though it did get pretty close. This was a very large shark. A few paddled in, the rest of us remained in the water. This was a very large shark, huge D fin. From Stinson Beach south to Ft Cronkite there's GW activity. I used to be a member of the South End Rowing Club, rowed boats for swimmers on a routine basis and saw many GW in SF Bay. Also surfing around Santa Cruz and Monterrey I've seen many GW sharks, quite often around Salmon creek.

I love these. I live in the Midwest, but my good friend surfs the trestles all the time, so this is fun to talk about. I had my guitar in my lap and caught myself subconsciously improvising over the music and wrote something pretty. Bonus!

You should come film at Padaro beach near Carpinteria if you haven’t already. There is regular juvenile great white activity there and it’s an easy drive up the coast from Malibu. We would love to see what you can capture!

The swimmers have such great attitudes about the sharks. It's great to see/hear because sharks have a bad reputation for many people but they're just doing what they do.

I totally love your channel and it's completely changed my view of great white sharks, living in the UK we are unlikely to be graced by the presence of one of these beautiful creatures which I now view as a misfortune rather than a relief.....
