Charles Martin slams Jim McMahon in the ground injuring his right shoulder. This was one of the most blatant as of disrespect by a player in NFL history. I don't believe McMahon fully recovered from this injury. A lot of opinions vary, as to whether or not the Bears could have repeated as Superbowl Champions?

Contrary to popular belief, the 85 Bears demise began, when starting CB Leslie Frazier had a career ending knee injury in Super Bowl XX.

You’re right on and could’ve used him against wsh in the playoffs which resulted in a loss where pass coverage was mediocre at best. But just as much if not more was buddy leaving to take the hc job in phl. Sure w/out injuries mac couldve gotten more consistent but the d the team’s strength wsnt quite the same

McMahon played 6 games that year. Between the 1st and 12th games, he missed 6 starts due to injury. During that time he started out with 5 TD passes to just 3 INTs before throwing 6-straight INTs without a TD in the final 3 games. Then he suffered the infamous dirty hit from Charles Martin that knocked him out for the season. Still, the decline was already apparent by then.

The Bears season effectively ended this day. You could also make the argument that the Bears career of Jim McMahon ended today as well. He was always hurt prior to this but the front office openly began looking for his replacement.

One of the most famous QB hits of the '80s. I agree that McMahon never fully recovered but that doesn't mean that that era of Bears football couldn't at least have gone to another SB between '86-'88.
@redmustangredmustang
@redmustangredmustang 5 лет назад
They had their shot in 1987 with a 14-0 lead against Washington and basically all the players there and they couldn't hold the lead. Hell, we all remember the Darrell Green punt return and the Bears still couldn't do anything with it in the red zone and could only settle for 1 field goal after that. The next year the 49ers were just too talented after the 49ers got their shit together going after the last few games. McMahon not being healthy really hurt the Bears and now he's paying for it most likely with CTE because he has the symptoms of it.

Charles Martin died in 2005. Still without McMahon the defense carried the offense, but without McMahon the Redskins took over. We can talk about if Tomczak could have done better, but in the end Flutie was not it. Even worse when McMahon came back the next year the Redskins came back from a 14-0 lead. Either way, even if the Bears made it to the NFC championship, they were not beating Giants. Simms came into his own in the playoffs and the Giants defense with LT were on fire at home.

A lot of this comes from Forrest Gregg...when he became coach of GB, it was the whole "you gotta be tough" - team as a whole wasn't any better than it was under Bart Starr...but a lot of cheap stuff vs. Chicago. Remember the 1985 game at Green Bay?

It’s funny that a Packers player got tossed for a late hit on a play where Walter grabbed him by the face mask and yanked him further out of bounds.

This is also what got Jerry Markbreit to referee the Super Bowl that year. Very few referees threw out players during the game for violent acts during that time. So he helped set a precedent for that.

I was 6 years old when this happened, I hated the Packers then and I hate the Packers now. Without Jimmy Mac the Bears offense wasn't Super Bowl caliber. The defense carried them more in 86 than they did in 85. Watching this game is painful, we should have won back to back Super Bowls.

@@paulevereklian none were playing well. But McMahon was barely better than the others. If we make the FLUTIE trade and not start him against Redskins give him a whole offseason and training camp to get used to team and playbook maybe he'd have a shot at being good.
