Not only is this one of the most intense songs in the album, it's also one of the most important from a storytelling standpoint. This is the song where Jesus realizes that he has become the very same American Idiot that he once sought to never become in the first song. And it took him breaking up with the girl of his dreams to realize that. It's the first big climax of the album and it really hits hard.
I knew it was about Jesus breaking up with what' her name. But I never thought about Jesus turning into the American idiot. That's a really good way to describe the song
extremely frustrating that this song isnt available on spotify by itself, only together with extraordinary girl, which is also great, but sometimes i only want to listen to one of them.
@@emfraridades7261 when you want to see your favorite scene from a movie do you rewatch the entire movie every time because that's how you were supposed to see it?
You're not the Jesus of Suburbia The St. Jimmy is a figment of Your father's rage, and your mother's love Made me the Idiot America i love the connection to the other songs in the musical/album
I love when he start to sing the part " And She Said..." is like A lot of memories comes to my mind,Not just for the lyrics, but the instrumental, the energy,it's all pretty awesome
Mood, I think it's because of the chord progression, there's 3 steps here : first chord is "She said I" then second, higher chord "can't take this place", and then the final one, a lower one, the conclusion "I'm leaving it behind". Three ideas, that put together with the music gives away the feeling of the character telling a story about how he had taken the decision, and contemplating the past
This is in my opinion, the best song on this album. Jesus of Suburbia is a very close second. I discovered this album as a kid and now im 28 and its still just as raw to me emotionally
MrMcArmenio Generation X kids were maturing at this point, and they had been pissed off at what was happening in the US. The Iraq war showed no signs of letting up, the 2004 US presidential election was about to go down (George W. Bush ended up winning again), and Americans were generally just divided and and pissed off at the money-grabbing, soul-eating world that they had inherited from their parents. I think they wanted a way out. I'm Canadian, but many of the same things were happening here.
Jordan Adams it's because he only uses it for the most climactic moments like when he did it in "she". Although I also want more upon hearing it, I now realize that when it actually happens, it's so impactful that it just reverberates in my head indefinitely. It probably would have been forgettable if he just used it all over the place
This isn't going to be one of those comments with, "This music is so great & the new generation music sucks" or something like that. Green Day, to me & as many other millennials should understand, is that this album single-handedly describes an entire generation in less than an hour. Really boil this album down along with the mentality of today's teens and even the young adults. Most, if not truly all, have much more distrust and believe in way more skepticism among not just their peers, but their government. Then in 2004, a band of (at the time) 30ish year olds release an album that dives straight into the emotional being of people half their age. I spent a year going through psychiatric care due to a breakup from a two-year relationship & i have to say, Green Day not just helped me bare through, but let me know others feel this pain & essentially saved my life. So everyone, seriously, why do we argue over "who's music is better?'
Because, they think it's better and feel the need to Express there opinion. The only way to get them to not, is to take away there freedom of speech, and they already fear that. Honestly pick the song and I bet there is music that is just as good. Pick the wrong song and your over generalizing. Some musical artists of today helped me through some abuse from relatives.
Y’all didn’t get his point 🌚🌝 plus we shouldn’t be discussing over who’s music is better, its for what it transmits you, it helped him get through a heartbreak but maybe for others “County” can help them get through family problems...
What I like so much about the album American Idiot is the fact that its for the outcasts, and the people who are "different" the people who society doesn't accept. And it kind of makes us all not feel so alone
Well thats the punk movement on its core. Unfortunately the movement became so fucking elitist, well, the whole rock comunitty became elitized, but bands like Green Day and Foo Fighters will always speak for the outsiders out there.
Just saw that an Alt Press article put this as the greatest Green Day song of all time and I must say, it’s a solid pick. Might not be the #1 song for sure, but definitely for contention. This song is legit a punk rock masterpiece.
i always thought this song to be the major climax/turning point of the albums story, 2:42 particularly this album.... will one day be a classic. no doubt
I played an acoustic arrangement of this song at an open mic night not too long ago. Such a fun song to play. 3:13 is always so hard to sing. I really got into it and I had to hold back the tears. Favorite part of the whole fucking album to be honest
i saw them live and singing "its not over til youre underground" live was incredible i just felt the depth in my heart. its just one of the so many lines that i could just feel
Ikr. same with me. If American Idiot wasn't there, I wouldn't even be listening to Green Day. Know I like old school punk rock Green Day but American Idiot is where I first met Green Day.
classic haha not hardly ... this was a 2004 release talk to me when u wanna discuss the real old School green day music from the albums .. Dookie nimrod etc.. lol
Regardless of whether you like punk or not. No matter if you don't like Green Day as a band. Regardless of if you think their newer music isn't as good. American Idiot is one of the best albums ever made. Its up there with Tommy, ZoSo, Master of Puppets, and Moving Pictures. It's proof that music can be timeless and meaningful. Some bands make an album where only one or two songs are fantastic and the rest are only good or okay. American Idiot is an entire album of amazing tracks.
Shit, showing my age but have loved green day since early 90s......... still love them, Billys dont give a Fu$k attitude helped me get through tough times when i was younger and they just kept getting better... Letterbomb hugely under rated song, Love and peace 2023.
The whole entire song. Talks about wheres the riots for our rights and the people who fight, then in the song it happens, and he says the city is burning, smells like burning, but it's not his fault.
I never liked the idea of getting a tattoo very much, but if I ever get one it will be "Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself?". Probably the acme of the whole album. God this song is one of the best songs of the 21st century so far.
Why is this song not acknowledged as much as the others? Firstly, it's the turning point of the whole album, where she leaves him and things start going downhill. Secondly, it has THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT LINE in the whole album, 'You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, and St Jimmy is a figment of, your father's rage and your mother's love, made me the IDIOT AMERICA!!!' absolutely astounding. And finally, it is the best song on the album, sends shivers to my whole body and is just AMAZING.
Mohammed Sabty ok, so I just learned I like trashy pop! I'm so happy! I guess since Green Day is this trashy pop you talk of, so are, the Sex Pistols, Offspring, Rancid, and The Ramones
i love you for this analysis :) i remember listening to the album for the first time and my mind blown, i think it was the first concept album i came across, it was amazing - not just random songs that the band made in the course of a given amount of time and then put together, but an actual story, characters, jesus, whatsername, st jimmy, amazing, simply amazing. haven't listened to this in so long, and now i find myself in the same awe as back then. i wish i could have that time back. love.
American Idiot was the album that got me into Green Day, and this has to be one of my favourite songs from them! Love the intensity from start to finish!
@@SmearCampaignsAreEvil You could argue it's referring to people in other countries than the US, as they contained the virus mostly, under a 2020 interpretation.
Jared Reisma wow someone needs to learn how to be nice to people and I was just commenting you do know im aloud to comment what I like don't you so just piss off how about that
This is the climax of the album, period. Not only musically, but from the standpoint of the story as well. It's about the Jesus of Suburbia realizing that he's as messed up as everyone else, both demented and disturbed as he said in Jesus of Suburbia. It also highlights a harsh breakup with Whatsername. To the ones who say that Homecoming is the climax of the album: Homecoming is just about the death of St. Jimmy and it goes over some of the most important parts of the story. It serves more as a conclusion whereas Letterbomb is the point at which the realization hits and he battles the problems that he has, sort of like a final boss of a game. It's truly a masterpiece.
i used to listen to this song and a bunch of other songs from the american album every night while i lay in bed the ipod shuffle was pretty new and all i had on that little shuffle was green day and i would listen to it every night as i feel asleep i'd think of the future and what it'll be like so here i am now 10 years later listening to this song again...so much nostalgia i will always be a die hard green day fan rock on guys
Hey Gloria? Are you standing close to the edge? Lookout to the setting sun The brink of your vision Eternal youth is a landscape of the lie The cracks of my skin can prove As the years will testify Say your prayers and light a fire we're going to start a war Your slogan's a gun for hire It's what we waited for Hey Gloria This is why we were on the edge The fight of our lives been drawn to this undying love Gloria!Viva La Gloria! You blast your name in graffiti on the walls (oh) Falling through broken glass that's slashing through your spirit I can hear it like a jilted crowd Gloria!Where are you Gloria? You found a home in all your scars and ammunition You made your bed in salad days amongst the ruins Ashes to ashes of our youth She smashed her knuckles into winter (Gloria) As autumns wind fades into black She is the saint of all the sinners (Gloria) The one that's fallen through the cracks So don't put away your burning light Gloria!Where are you Gloria? Don't lose you faith to your lost naivete Weather the storm and don't look back on last November When your banners were burning down Gloria!Viva La Gloria! Send me your amnesty down to the broken hearted Bring us the season that we always will remember Don't let the bonfires go out So Gloria Send out your message of the light that shadows in the night Gloria where's your undying love? Tell me the story of your life ... (Your life!)
ive moved around a lot and this lyric always seems to resonate with me the loudest, really just is a perfect reminder for how it feels to be in a place you hate and finally get away, the sadness and happiness all blended together.
Wow it has been a long time since the first time i listened to this song. I was still a high school student. Those were great times where i could lay in bed while listening to my favourite music without any important worry. Hope you too enjoy this piece. I recommebd to you '' whatsername''
The sheer power of the sound production, the lyrics and the energy of Billie J.'s delivery, this album might not remain legendary like some others but they sure invested some genuine creativity and soul in it. I love it
