Green Lasers: What Can Certain mW Do?

This video compares some of the most common power outputs of green lasers you can buy these days. I compare the difference in visibility and burning between 5mW, 15mW, 35mW, 50mW, 100mW, and 150mW.
Important info after watching this video:
-I used fog to bring out the beams.
-This video is only about green lasers because they are nearly always fixed focus and have a small beam diameter.
-I mention powers where tricks are EASY to do. You may be able to pull off burning tricks with less power than what I state, but these are bench mark powers where you can reliably do these burning tricks.
-Additional focusing with extra lenses can lower the threshold of what you need to burn. Watch my focus video for a better explanation of this.
-I go by actual power of these lasers in this video, not advertised. Nearly all cheap laser sites sell lasers marked from 100mW to 300mW when in reality the actual power is much lower.
Check out laserpointerfor... to learn more about laser pointers, lasers, and laser pointer companies! I have been a member there for 8 years, and have received a bunch of help from the knowledgeable members there!

you need eye protection for anything over 5mW, 35mW will still burn holes in your retina.

Anything greater than 1mw sweems the current recommendation as of 2024. Since there seems no accurate way to tell the power of a laser for the average end-user, just do not look at a laser. It is very apparent why powerful lasers pens are no longer easily purchased.

@davehimlin2374 13 дней назад
@@geraldhenrickson7472 is it safe to look at the beam, as long as it is focused away from the eyes/person ? ...the beam is only dangerous to the eyes, if it is directed into the eyes or reflects off of something and bounces back directly into the eyes ?

These are all diode pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers... Old school. Lets see the 520nm direct green diode lasers...I hear Nichia's got a 9 mm, 6 watt 520nm diode coming down the pipe. The 6 watt 445nm blue's are already on the market frying eyeball's...Imagine 6000mW of green beam lasing the sky..."I become death...The destroyer of worlds"...And retinas!
@styropyro
@styropyro 8 лет назад
Oh man I need that 6W Nichia beast, although I bet it will be awful to drive. Green LDs still have terrible efficiency and need to be improved, because 6W of 520nm takes about the same power to run as roughly 30W of 450nm.
@yourcaseworker6916

A couple of 18650 li-on cells...2700 to 3000 mAh should store of enough juice to run for a while...The right driver and a copper heat sink should provide a decent 30 to 60 second duty cycle...It'd be a good burner. I have a 9 mm green in a mini MXDL host...peaking at 1.25 W with a linear driver...Power supply is one 14500 - 3.7V 2000mAh li-on cell, with a small aluminum heat sink...duty cycle is 20 to 30 seconds on/off...It's a stealthy pocket dazzler.
@baguazhang2

You'd need to have some serious heatsinking on that one. Sanwu could probably do it commercially at a reasonable price.
@yourcaseworker6916

Check out Rick Trent's videos on You Tube...He's already done it in a handheld host with a copper heat sink and 1 minute duty cycles. 6 watt Nichias in the 440 to 445nm wavelength...He is genius.

I think you can increase the output by heating the connections inside the laser, but as I'm sure you've been warned, the diodes in weaker lasers are usually tempermental and can become unstable should you try and modify them. Hope this helps.

It depends on the power of the laser. From 1-499 mw, its safe to look at reflections without laser shades (however it is still required to wear shades for anything past 5 mw, for, direct exposure could cause some serious eye damage). From 500 mw on, it is NOT safe to even look at reflections the beam makes.

It depends on how dry and thin the wood is. I have a 1W laser like you and i can light match sticks on fire (the wood part not the red phosphorus part). But I wouldnt expect you to be able to get a big log alight. If you had some dry leaves or pine needles around you could make a fire that way. All it takes is a little smolder.

One can see the green laser beam at low power more easily than other coloured beams because the human eye is most sensitive to green light. The light that you see from the beam is actually reflecting of dust/air particles. You only see a very small amount of the photons in the beam, as most of them just keep going to the target and never reach your eye.
@No1sonuk
@No1sonuk Год назад
This is also the source of the "green is brighter than red" myth. Green 5mW is the same brightness as red 5mW. The green just LOOKS brighter because of the eye's colour response. It's also why NVG system displays are usually green.

I just purchased a rifle-mounted light with an integrated 5mw green laser. Can you really see the beam itself with that thing normally like shown at :24? Or did you throw in a puff of smoke or vapor to make the beam visible? If you can see it, might kind of be a bad thing if you can trace a big green illuminescent line back to the person with the laser.

There are a couple of 10 watt (10,000mw) lasers on sale for around $55 on AliExpress right now. They come with glasses, case, 5 star heads, li-ion battery (2 18650 cells) and they are very powerful. You can only use these for a few min then you have to let them rest or they will over heat. Results will vary I suppose. I found that 50 mW green (metered at 55 mW) is just barely visible in lit areas, but it can pop a black balloon. It can put a small pinhole through electrical tape in about 1 minute. This is an Optotronics laser with a small diameter beam and extremely low divergence. At 300 mW (metered at 307 mW), a green laser will burn dark paper when unfocused and also light a match. When focused, it can put some shallow holes into wood and burn through a CD case.

That could be that you arent holding the match at the focal point of the beam or that your batteries are bad. In a green laser like that, you usually can't adjust the focus of the laser so you'll have to find where the beam is smallest and use that to burn. Also, if you color the match black with a marker it will help absorb most of the light coming at it and burn faster. White surfaces don't burn very well when it comes to lasers.

Try searching for: HOW TO TURN A 5MW LASER INTO A 100MW LASER in youtube. It may give you a better idea of what to do. If that doesn't work out, try wickedlasers. They sell some INSANE lasers that are brighter than you could ever need. They aren't cheap,(about $300) but they're worth the money. I think for another $50, you can buy a lens kit you can use to dial down the laser output to a safer level as well as cool effects. you can also use the focusing lens to burn through things.

The main reason why most green lasers are visible at night is because your eye is more sensitive to green (and yellow) then the other colors. The reason more power makes for a more visible beam is because more light gets reflected off air particles into your eye. Also, I suggest doing some research before posting questions on youtube videos, because often, the answer can be found faster on the internet. Since questions like these have been answered 500+ times.
@Desmonddd2002
@Desmonddd2002 11 лет назад
actually, its a common misconception about higher laser power = higher ability to burn things. its ability to "pop" balloons and "burn holes" also depends on the beam width. if the contact area of the laser pointer and the plastic is smaller, then the energy is more focused, and it can burn stuff easily. so theoretically if u focus the beam enough 10mW laser can also burn stuff.

Just so you know, I have a laser that looks exactly like the "15mw" laser you've shown here and when you place an 1064nm cutoff filter in front of the beam, the laser power drops down to about 3-4mw. Which means most of what your power meter is reading is in the IR range of the spectrum. This is probably the reason why your 5mw looks nearly as bright as your "15mw".
@fatboi768
@fatboi768 9 лет назад
wouldn't you need an 808 IR filter because green lasers are off of an 808nm diode so your probably filtering out the green light and not the ir
@pwscottiv
@pwscottiv 9 лет назад
Fat Boi No, I'm assuming that this laser uses neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd:YVO4) crystal which produces 1064 nm wavelength light from the main spectral transition of neodymium ion. But I guess it's possible that it's using a 808 nm wavelength infrared GaAlAs laser diode pumps a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG). Regardless, I've checked with both an IR band-pass AND an IR cut-off filter to verify my hypothesis. When I place the IR band-pass filter in front of the laser, absolutely no green light (nor anything in the entire visible spectrum) passes through. And the IR cut-off filter is nearly colorless and appears to be essentially clear. Regardless of what the exact IR wavelength is leaking through, the proportion of IR to 532 is very high. With fresh batteries I get a reading of about 25mw with no filtering. Filtering out the green I get about 22mw.

If i use 300mw, 808nm ir diode, and use crystal to make it green, how much mw the power will be?

Light is composed of photons. These photons have energy. The energy E is defined as the product of Plancks constant h and frequency v. As a result, photons with a higher frequency / lower wavelength have more energy and are capable of doing more things. From left to right is the order of stronger to weaker light: ultraviolet (UV) - violet - blue - green - yellow - orange - red - infraded A 5mw violet laser (400nm wavelength) has more energy than 5mw red laswer (800nm wavelength)

it does depend on the distance, a laser could be 70mW, but at 20cm (eye safe) it would be 2mW. and yet, even 2mW isnt really healthy to look at, you could lose your visibility for couple of seconds if you look directly at the laser at 20cm (2mW if the diode is 70mW) and i've been doing FTP on a lot of lasers lately :P

awww yeah. I usually peal of the bark/never from the logs. Bark is called never when used in campfires. It's enviormental too since it would have been burnt anyways.

I don't know what kind of 5mw lasers you buy, but the 5mw green lasers you get in germany have literally no visible beam. Not even in a completely dark room.

Our eyes are more sensitive to 555nm light. But I also read that our eyes are sensitive to 490nm light on dark adapted conditions.

I'm guessing that the manufacturer is trying to say that it's max output is no more than 300mW. You could test it with one of those laser tester thingys.

You can buy them from various stores. From your high quality CNI , DragonLasers, etc. To your middle of the line, O-like , Techhood, Laserland ,Lazerer. To your overpriced and rubbish . WickedLaser,etc. Personally, I'll recommend you to head towards LaserPointerForums to understand the basic safety and mechanisms of lasers. Perhaps talk with few of the hobbyists there. They surely will help you get on your feet. Treat a laser as you will with any powertools. With great care.

did you use fog to make the beam more visible? And also, where did you get that 150mw green laser pen you showed us in the video?

you would feel a shocking heat were the laser is pointing compared to the sunlight shining through a magnifeing glass that will take longer
@happylogmim

I suggest buying from novalasers or optotronics. They sell very nice laser pens and they are always overspec. Although it's not focusable, it will burn things without aid due to the tiny beam diameter. If you really want to focus it, you can use a magnifying glass. Be sure to buy laser goggles. P.S. Always do research on a company before you buy from them, for lasers at least. 90% of the time, lasers bought from non-reputable sites will be underspec crap.

So yeah in reality, devices that can conduct lazers are really alot more like flashlights 🔦 just with extremely powerful and focused beams. That's probably why when you use a 🔦 or any type of light emitting device for a long period of time, it can burn you or feel warm when you touch it or put you're hand and fingers in front of it.

Question 1. Are these lasers safe on skin? 2. Where do you buy these?
@Pavlomv
@Pavlomv 11 лет назад
I'm gonna go ahead and say they are legal. But even if they burn? You would think that would be an issue with safety. Thanks for the answer Gunnishone :)

i just found something that said the highest legal laser pointer you can own is a class 2 or 1mw, but you can own static lasers up to something like 500mw, or something, you know, the ones you can't move

There're harmless lasers. I'm not saying that your eyes wouldn't be effected by some minutes in them, but you wouldn't be able to injure anyone (maybe if you would point it at a driver, it could be dangerous).

Under 5mw you are protected by your blink reflex. lasers between 5mw and 500mw are considered Class III B which means exposure for even a fraction of a second can cause permanent eye damage. I dont think "eye safe" is a good phrase when referring to lasers.

I suggest optotronics for price and quility, but novalasers in my opinion has the best quility for laser pens.

You usually have to put an item at the focus point of the laser to burn it
