Greg & Isaac are on a Tennessee ranch converting it over into a profitable grazing operation that will prosper on forage alone. You need to have all the ranch members on board with the new direction of management needed to turn a ranch into a prosperous grazing operation. This is going to be a very exciting project to take a severely overgrazed ranch and convert it into a grass haven with proper grazing management. If you want to keep your farm profitable every year, check out my 3 grazing books that i wrote on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

In Middle TN many of the pastures look rough. Clay and rocky soil, sedge, hot dry summers don't help. If the soil was better it would be ideal. The other problem is everybody is moving here. The main thing we are growing on the land is houses. 😄

Yep, I was going to say that it looks like a golf course and by summer it may look like a dust bowl. There just is no rest for the grass happening there. Its lovely to hear the new managers are on board. The front yard has more grass than the pasture. I hope they aren't using any pour on or poisons on the cows.

Nice! Would be interesting to have some soil benchmarks from nutrient analysis, soil organic matter...infiltration rate... and if you put some reference stakes in the soil around the farm with a zero at soil level. All those parameters will be going up over time with the changes in pasture management.

I was on a similarly beautiful ranch like that in Middle TN just a few weeks ago, it was a old dairy farm that was now a beef ranch, and had 1000 or better acres of rolling hills, all pastured to DEATH. I hope probably like a lot of your viewers, we would love to see the updates an progress here at this place. My curiosity question is... obviously 400+ head just in general was way to many for the ground. Is that the main reason you guys cut some from the hurd or did you notice other things with the cows?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 2 года назад
The grass was eaten off flush with the ground on the whole ranch. Way overstocked with the lack of grazing management being used. Basically, the cows were on a 3-paddock rotation all year with several weeks of rest. It was a recipe for disaster.

This what you mean by 200. 192 cows, 8 bulls, 192 calves and 192 yearlings in the growing season, harvest 192 head at 18 months? During the dormant season, on 1200 acres, 3 acres for every head? Once you heal the land, During dormant season can you increase stock to 2 acres per every head?

Great to see you’re into regenerative agriculture. That is a beautiful ranch! What does land like that cost per acre in Tennessee? I think the first thing I would do there, is overseed all the pastures. Regenerative agriculture is the way farmers need to manage their farms, now and in the future. The cost of fertilizers today, should motivate them to make the switch to regenerative agriculture. If you haven’t seen this video series yet, check out Gabe Brown’s video series, titled: “Treating the Farm as an Ecosystem with Gabe Brown, Part 1, The Five Tenets of Soil Health.” Gabe Brown’s farm only gets 11 inches of rain per year and he’s up in North Dakota. If he can do it successfully up there, you should have much quicker success in Tennessee. The video series is very good and he throws in some really good humor, as well. Check it out. Subscribed!
