Greg talks with the school shooter who killed his son 25 years ago | StoryCorps

This StoryCorps conversation was one that was difficult to have, and for some, will be hard to hear. It happened at a prison, where a father sat down to talk with the school shooter who killed his son.
On December 14, 1992, Wayne Lo murdered Greg Gibson’s son Galen, in a shooting at Simon’s Rock college in Massachusetts. In the years since, Gibson has set out to understand how it happened, in the hopes of preventing anyone else from having to live through what he has. Almost 25 years after the shooting, he visited Lo in prison for a StoryCorps interview - the first time they had ever spoken.

Man, that was heavy. My deepest respects to the father for allowing the shooter forgiveness so that he may hopefully exorcise the demons inhabiting his mind and perhaps one day contribute to society to repay at least 1% of the damage he caused. Thanks for making this, StoryCorps.

MLG Cactus Exactly. Nobody cares about looking at the shooters. People never ask why they did what they did. I don’t think that they do it because of mental illness. I think it is anger and lack of empathy at the time. Many of these shooters were bullied or abused and they feel as if they need to hurt people like they were hurt. People need to look at the shooter and not the weapon.

yep no one cares about the persons internal suffering all it is today is this man shot up a burger king this kid shot up his school its absolutely never about what was done to the kid to push him to that point or the man you can't blame the murderer for their actions entirely you don't blame the people who made them that way the true monsters are the bullies the abusers maybe if people paid more attention and learned to understand the feelings of others for once in their lives they would see a massive drop in these kind of things. gun laws won't stop it mental health programs will

@@docthekitty2484 You're an half-enlightened American who is a bit Uneducated. Americans being nice to one another isn't going to minimize Mass Shootings in the U.S. Watch a Video Called "How to Stop a School Shooting" By Randy Brown on youtube who is the father of Brookes Brown that was friends with Eric Harris and Dyland Klebold. You also ignore that Wayne Lo is one of the rare mass shooters who has remorse for his crimes and has been rehabilittated because he's not a Psychopath. 95% of Mass Shooters Don't have any Sympathy or remorse. Just like TJ Lane and Hundreds of others who are incarcerated. Learm, Read, Educate.

Mr. Gibson, props to you for having the strength not only to forgive him, but to speak to him in person. Mr. Lo, I respect the fact that you realized the error of your ways and made the effort to reach out to the families of your victims. I also respect the fact that you've set up that website where the proceeds go to the families of your victims. I don't know what your religious/spiritual perspectives are, but as a believer in God, I believe God will forgive you if you are truly repentant and accept that forgiveness.

This is why revenge is such a stupid and pointless concept. Sure, it can feel redemptive, but imagine this: imagine the man who committed this shooting never got to apologise, was surrounded by so much pain and anger (no matter how well deserved it is) that he was consumed by it. Imagine him, finally out of prison, a destroyer looking for more targets to hurt. But this conversation means that, even if he can never change the past, he may be able to help the world be a slightly, minisculely better place than that afternoon he killed someone's son. And that benefits everyone.

Its very touchy. There’s a lot of people who would never have remorse for the things they’ve done and they still believe in the things they do. Others are like this they are haunted by their deeds and have come to terms with their mistakes. People are people and not just black and white. But we can never know truly how to deal with certain things. I understand both sides of wanting revenge and not believing in it. Their are good points to both. In the end however letting someone rot in prison is just as bad as them being dead to the world.

If it were me I’d want nothing more than to get payback. But as is the case, you often feel empty when you enact vengeance. You still lost what you lost. Only now you stooped to the level of the murderer. Forgiving is the tougher battle. And if you succeed you may not walk away feeling as empty.

Watching Wayne's earlier interviews really lends perspective to the amount of work he put into understanding himself and his actions. Reading "Gone Boy" and listening to this interview, you can see how much Greg and his family have worked to move forward. The tragedy comes not only from the deceased, but the relatively small amount of time it would have taken a psychological professional to determine Wayne's state were they given the opportunity. There is no one to blame except Wayne, but there were multiple classmates who felt uneasy about Wayne's behavior, recognize your feelings and understand they exist for a reason. Make it known how uncomfortable or threatened you are by someone, but also make it known how completely willing you are to support that person if they're having a rough time (and of course they agree to respect you and your boundaries). The difference between some murderous youth and the rest of the population is a plethora of mistakes. Children *do not* have the capacity to fully understand the world around them, nor the consequences of their actions. It genuinely takes most people until around 28 to FULLY develop emotionally. We speak on end about physical brain development being a key part of adulthood, but that leaves zero room for understanding. Emotional development is an important process by which we root our morals and ethics, Wayne didn't just take the future of his victims, he took his own too, and without hesitation. I am not saying that a simple conversation would reveal what Wayne would have done, I am saying that we will never know if someone could have gotten through because they didn't try. Whatever you would like to believe, there is absolutely no way (Including schizophrenia) that Wayne was normal one day, and murderous the next.

_My Highschool friend committed a Mass Shooting in Canada in 2006. School Shooters don't want to just kill Bullies - they want to kill the school because the school is the bully because the teachers and everyone around them do nothing. It's the enviroment. Mass Shooters are not thinking about the pain or damage their going to cause, they're thinking about getting hyper-vigilante revenge. They want to kill the school. They hate the school, and who could blame them? The school is allowing them to be psychically abused and humilated in front of thousands of other children and the schools allow it. There is more like our Violent Gun Culture, Mental Health and lack of proper Support but don't feel like typing a Novel out._
