This particular commercial was repeated numerous times during much of the early 1970's as I remember seeing this commercial on TV when I was between the ages of 4-5 years old. I also used to see a lot of Gremlin's on the road during that time. A few friends of my family even had a Gremlin and they said that it was a very good and reliable little car. On occasion, I still see a Gremlin on the road when I least expect it. WOW! What memories.

Ironically, AMC not having a lot of cash meant that they built more dependable cars with older technology and existing parts. Certainly more solid than General Motors' shitboxes at the time.

One thing the Gremlin was really reliable for was rusting straight through the floorboards so that your feet dragged on the pavement when you drove. Then again, I lived in the Chicago area and the salt on the roads just dissolved these cars to bits in a matter of a few years.

Yeah Brad, I hear you. I remember friends of my family had AMC cars and they said that they were very good and very reliable. I also remember a few of my relatives having AMC cars as well. It's too bad that this particular factory's cars have become the butt of jokes and cracks by many, when in reality, these cars were better than many thought they were at the time. On occasion, I still see an AMC car on the road when I least expect to.

Very underrated Car! Sure, they were "Different" looking... but they had more interior space, comfort and standard equipment, than ANY other Car in its Class! The straight six was SO good, at least it's block and bottom end *still* exist in TODAY'S Jeeps!!

During the early 1970s American cars “are remembered far more often for their power than their style, and ... throughout the decade, the character of cars became blurred. Only a handful of cars had real personalities...” the AMC Gremlin was one of them, “a pioneering hatchback”.[8] According to Tom and Ray Magliozzi, "it's easy to criticize this car now, because just about any car from the early '70s would look bad next to today's cars. They had no fuel injection, no independent suspension, no air bags, no anti-lock brakes, no nothing! But compared with the other cars of its era, the Gremlin wasn't bad."[101]

Fold the back seat down and the front seat all forward and it made a decent bed. All I added was a thumping sterio with speakers in the quarter panels. And yellow fog lights.

The AMC Gremlin is not ugly, save for a ill informed, pack think, there is no rational reason for the Gremlin or the Pacer (well ahead of its time and inspiration for the Porsche 928). The Gremlin was brilliant use of an existing platform (Hornet) by AMC designer Dick Teague - a true genius. 1. Chilton's Automotive Industries magazine named Teague the 1976 "Man of the Year" for his designs and work on the AMC Pacer.[47] In the award's 12 year history, this was the first time an automotive stylist was so honored.[48] 2. Teague was honored with the EyesOn Design 1999 "Lifetime Design Achievement Award" for his accomplishments as an automotive designer. Dare to be different.

Love this commercial ! it`s from the times America sold the whole world the idea that belonging to the USA was a promised land and everybody would be happy . To those one who criticizes AMC cars, this Gremlin and others like Concord Spirit etc wasn`t worst than idle Ford Fairmonts, Dodge Aspens, Chevy Vegas and GM Citations which were really the killers of the American cars industry`s trust and let today 65% of the consumers driving smartest and most dependable machines like e.g. Toyota Honda Nissan Hyundai and Subaru. AMC cars, except those assembling the renault line of Encore/Alliance, were quite decent automobiles which offered a lot for the tiny sticker price .

Julieta Lariat They were ugly to look at. If AMC had better designers they would have been more competitive. Their cars were ugly for the most part and the ones that weren't, looked like cheap knock offs of the big 3's cars. Whoever the design team was should have been fired.
@OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain 8 лет назад
+dstarks80 Honestly, you're way off base. The Gremlin and Spirit sold almost a million cars between 1970 and 1983. How can you say the would have sold more had they been styled differently? They were AMC's most successful car ever in a single body style. Secondly, AMC design team was so highly thought of in Detroit, it was part of why Chrysler Aquired AMC. AMC's design team took control of Chrysler's design department and created the LH platform cars that were a huge financial success for Chrysler in the 90's. They also created the Neon for Chrysler. AMC basically took over Chrysler with out Chrysler knowing what was happening.

The irony of the Gremlin being condemned as ugly when it was conceived to challenge the ugliest car of all time - the VW Beetle. Somehow the Beetle wasn't considered ugly or dated despite being both but Gremlin was both. It was criticized for being dated five years into its run when the design for the beetle more than 30 years dated in 1970.

@105749745419977964477 Yeah, people back then also though polyester leisure suits in puke green were a good idea. Hindsight is 20 / 20, huh? By the way, how did they "almost sell a million" when they only made 671,475 Gremlins... IN 8 YEARS? (Hardly a "home run," buddy.) It was a last gasp POS car from a dying American car company that made nothing but shit cars in the '70s. Also, the AMX Javelin was their most popular body style ever. Quit talking out of your fucking ass about something you know *nothing* about.

OsbornTramain All Chrysler wanted out of AMC was Jeep... period. The only reason they kept building Eagles was to use up excess parts. After AMC fucked themselves with the V8 Pacer, which nobody wanted, they were dead in the water. As for AMC dieing, yeah... they did. Go try and buy a new one! Yes, I am counting the Mexican market. THERE WERE ONLY 671,475 MADE!!! Again, how is that "close to a million?" The Spirit? Really? IT WAS A DIFFERENT BODY AND MODEL! What the Hell are you thinking? We're talking about the *Gremlin*, NOT THE FUCKING *SPIRIT*! Would you go up to someone with a '64 Mustang and seriously say the '64 Mustang is really a Falcon... so you should call it a Falcon? Actually, I'd like to see you do that. They'd beat the shit out of you.
