Do you have a plan in place to survive a nuclear or radiological attack? Our family’s plan is to shelter in our basement, the safest place available to us. We wanted to make sure we have everything we need down there to survive several weeks. So I put together this grid down emergency cooking kit to make sure we have what we need to prepare the food that is already there. It is also easy to grab and carry in the event that we need to bug out by car and take it with us.
*The one thing I forgot in the video was a ladle! It was in the dishwasher but I’ve now added it to the kit!

Your thoroughness always amazes me, Jara. As does the amount of thought you put into planning. I live in Florida, so I don't have a basement. I'd love it if Rob would do a video about what a nuclear blast would be like. How can someone who doesn't have a basement best prepare? Will the grid go down due to nuclear fallout? Etc. Thanks for another magnificent video. 🍳

Hey there, Rob here 🙋‍♂️ Thank you for watching!! I'm in the process of putting a video together that answers "What is an EMP?" ..... so as soon as I'm finished with that, I'll get to work on your idea! I like the way you think!! Keep the ideas and the comments coming, we love hearing from you!

@Grant Jones it might be time to think outside "the box" of your apartment so to speak. Does your building have a basement level at all? Building staircases can be options if they are deeper within the building and often steel or concrete reinforced. Is there a close nearby building that is made of brick or concrete and possibly has inner areas or lower levels? There are so many variables that are impossible to know such as impact location and warning time, if any. But just brainstorming different options can be helpful. There would obviously be an area within which not much would matter but for the majority outside that radius there are options.

Yes no basement here in South Texas windows in all the rooms with only a small hallway where we stored our pantry. We only have 1000 Sq ft.

It is more likely that Yellowstone explodes. If that happens, Florida is a good place to be as long as the sea does not put you at risk in case of earthquake.

Great job. I just found your channel and shared it with many people. Yesterday I put together the TOTE for a week. 🍳 Last year I put together a "Lights out kit". Fits in a free bucket I got from the bakery. Holds an oil lamp, bottle of fuel, candles, candle holders, matches, etc. Can't cook if no light. 🍳 Also, I have a bucket just for starting fires. Be Prepared, not Scared!!!! Keep up the great work.

Dont forget bedding and extra clothes. Bedding could be a sleeping bag for everyone. And a couple of outfits per person. In a fallout you cant leave your shelter for at least 30 days. It takes that long for the air to clear.

I think its pretty wild that in a shtf scenario someone would just be chilling in their basement cooking up some chili 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I dont have a large family so I picture myself in a shtf scenario hyperventilating in a corner chugging water, eating granola bars and beef jerky. Sure any days longer than 3 or 4 and going into a week long scenario then I might pull out a bigger pot than a camping size pot to cook up some comfort food 🤞
@wickedprepared
@wickedprepared 2 года назад
Lol Angie! The idea for the kit really came about when I started thinking about how would we really utilize all that food down there without some basic cooking utensils. We do have some emergency meal kits we put together that are really just heat and eat, our meals in a jar that are just add water and cook... stuff like that! And this kit can be used for so many other emergencies also that might be slightly less nerve wracking! Even just the ability to open the soup can and heat it a little will be nice! But like you mentioned with kids it's important to have some ability to keep everyone calm and comfortable! ❤
@angelafaith5605
@angelafaith5605 2 года назад
@@wickedprepared ❤❤ I really was just joking a bit. I dont see myself using a big stockpot for those scenarios but for kids to not be hungry 🙏🙏 I was genuinely thinking tho that the people who are organized and ready for the shizzy need to be vlogging their life so we can see how its all tested and used 🤣🤣 I hope all of us make it through the chaos and comfortably safe and not sorry .....and yes I keep thinking of more things to add to my to do list! How are people who are doing nothing not even doing something (??) I just bought a luggable loo because heaven knows we dont want to be sheltering in place in the bathroom 🤣🤣 ....our house has 3 floors plus the basement (no garage) and plus a bug out bag, my head might forever be spinning with what to organize and where and how 🤣🤣

You will need a sink to drain food. A toilet, or make shift toilet. Some matresses to sleep on would be nice. And a table with chairs. Also some games, or cards and dice. Coloring books and crayons for the kidos. Or bordom will become a problem. Best of luck.

GasOne makes the dual fuel stove. Comes with the propane adapter hose. Works great. If you want a really good one Iwatani has a high heat 15000 btu stove made in Japan. It’s about $90-100 but will boil water super fast, it is also windproof, we use that one for tailgating and camping. That one is only butane.

I didn't keep track when I did this, but years ago when I put together our "camp kitchen" (very similar but not quite as compact) I spent some time roaming through goodwill and thrift stores and got a lot of utensils and pots/pans there that I used. I also shopped at dollar tree for utensils. So that's an option too! The butane stove is the heart of our emergency cooking setup and it's very inexpensive. A great place to start.

I assume that your pantry has some things that could be eaten without cooking, having that option extends the amount of time you could be in the basement. I have a camping set which nests a pot or 2, a skillet and bowls, plates, and cups for 4, the whole set is smaller than my stock pot. I also have some camping pots that used to belong to a scout troop but they would be left if I had to bug out. boiling water takes more energy than just heating up, so hand sanatizer and wet wipes to lessen water use is something to consider.

I know things change and I don't know if anyone knows this but exactly what would happen if we had a nuclear bomb dropped? Does the electric go out? Do we need a battery radio? What exactly is going to happen? Will people go crazy and try to steal your stuff? Sorry I've always been a hoarder of can goods but really nothing else. It's really sad how much energy we will have to apply to prepping for this when such an event is entirely avoidable and should never happen in the first place. Why is it acceptable all of a sudden to have to consider the possibility this happening, it's a possibility to consider prepping for. How about making sure it doesn't happen. No one puts energy into that. Why do we have elected leaders when we still have to anticipate such an event may be possible. There's no nonchalant prepping and we're ok. Look at Hiroshima survivor pictures and the suffering they had to endure. Yet every one wants to prep and keep their loved ones safe. How safe will you be? People will drink milk unaware it's radiated. Milk keeps radiation. We need to prevent any nuclear event from happening that's where the energy needs to go. Surviving with prepping is possible but the amount of suffering and tragedy... We've seen it. Did we learn from it? Considering this a possible event is wise, prepping is wise but just be aware that this not a gentlemen's crime. We haven't learned from the past. Sad. You prep, you survive. How will we find non irradiated water to drink and food? Moneybags have bunkers and food stashed away, no doubt. All Preps run out and then you still have to face the crap outside.
@wickedprepared
@wickedprepared 2 года назад
All good points Maike ❤ I guess I just like to control what I can. But really thinking about a nuclear attack was just the catalyst for me putting this together and getting everything all in one self contained kit. It could be used for countless other situations. But I agree with you I hope something like this never comes to pass!

You could have a small fridge running on batteries or propane, but for the propane fridge, I dont know about the carbon monoxide venting. If you were rich, a Tesla wall would be very practical. Maybe in a few years when EV'S are setup to provide electricity to the homes, you will be able to resolve that issue. Good luck.

In the absence of underground shelter, it's best to get to the center of the building, materials like concrete, brick, stone, lead and steel are the best shielding material outside of solid earth. Two of the things you'll be worried about are fallout and gamma radiation. Any type of shelter should be enough to protect you from fallout . It's the gamma radiation that is penetrating and can pass through many materials similar to an xray. These rays are limited to traveling in straight line though. Knowing the the direction of the detonation relative to your location could help you put the most barrier between you and those type of radiation. Also shielding yourself from heat and shock waves and flying debris but if you are close enough to be worrying about that your reaction time would be almost nil. But also think about other resources that could be close by to your home or wherever you are if you aren't at home.

My comment is not related to cooking at all more about adding an extra layer of protection. You might have time to stack some premade sandbags over the basement windows if you already have them filled and in a wheelbarrow or wagon ready to move quickly in the event it's needed. It's always amazes me how I watch videos of the same vloggers every year having to get plywood to board up the same windows in the event of a hurricane. I'm thinking WHY are they getting rid of the wood? for one it's expensive and time consuming to keep having to measure and cut. Guess it's not as dramatic of a video if you're not in a panic trying to prepare. I personally would mark the boards and keep them year after year but that's just me I guess. Anyway as preppers we like to do as much as possible in a cost effective manner and have as much done before it's needed. So I'm getting foam board insulation to have precut and measured for my two bigger windows and I have the plastic and duct tape right there with them. covering up vents etc is going to be time consuming so having the windows prepped ahead of time could potentially be a matter of life of death.

This is so interesting Liz. I was thinking about the basement windows and my thought was the lead aprons like they use for xray or something along those lines. But the sandbag idea is interesting we'll have to explore that I never thought of that! Like you though we do save every piece of wood, material etc. You never know when it might come in handy and we can't afford to waste. But you're absolutely right about prepping things ahead of time for the situations when seconds count!

if the carbon dioxide detector showed too high, how would you get rid of it without being able to get fresh air? I feel like any type of fire would be dangerous since you would be in a place without any type of ventilation. Love your videos, thanks for all your ideas

The digital readout should show if any CO is being produced at all (which it shouldn't if the appliances are working correctly). This would allow one to discontinue use immediately before levels rose to more dangerous levels.

@@Mariemarie-uw7id a house won't protect against nuclear bomb
@wickedprepared
@wickedprepared 2 года назад
Even a basement won't protect you from a nuclear bomb if you're within 5-10 miles of the impact. However, beyond that radius and a basement DOES protect you from gamma rays and fallout. With no basement or bunker, your main goal is to put as much mass between you and the direction of the bomb as possible. If you find a friend that has a basement, a church, a parking garage, high-rise building, shopping center, subway. There's even a story of a man that survived Hiroshima by ducking into a drainage ditch. Most of us learn at a young age that nuclear war is impossible to survive. But it's not the case. With some preparation and some planning... it is absolutely survivable, even without a basement or bunker. We're working on a series of videos that will be coming out soon about this, so make sure to subscribe and check back often.

The one question I have, that I haven’t been able to find concrete information about, is how long the air in my basement can sustain me, and how not to waste available oxygen. I did read that in an empty 10 x 10 x 10 room of, initially, fresh air that 1 person could survive 2-3 days. Now, that is for a completely empty room (no storage boxes or emergency food). So, our basement has a very limited capacity of air, and my worry is that, should we also lose electricity, what could be used to heat food that will not use up the precious oxygen? I have found sufficient battery-powered lighting, but nothing for heating food. Will I just have to be content with cold soup straight from a can? Thanks in advance!
@wickedprepared
@wickedprepared 2 года назад
Hi Tiffany! From what I've read and researched I'll try to put together something that makes sense. First of all it's virtually impossible to make any room completely airtight. If plastic is used to seal up a room it should only be for a few hours. Plastic is recommended more for chemical or biological attacks which usually dissipate more quickly. Plastic sheeting would not stop gamma radiation "rays" but getting yourself down below ground level will since these rays can only travel in a straight line. Theoretically plastic should offer some shielding from fallout particles, but the physical structure of your house will do that (roof walls etc). We do keep plastic sheeting in our kits. I believe it could be valuable to seal off obvious holes and cracks as well as air intakes such as for hvac systems that could allow fallout particles to enter. It could also be helpful to cordon off a decontamination area of your shelter if needed. But once again no room can or will typically be airtight there is natural ventilation ie. why you won't suffocate in your home even with all the doors and windows closed. I definitely would have battery operated carbon monoxide detectors and if you can find one an oxygen depletion alarm. Also if you can keep track of weather patterns such as winds and the direction of a blast relative to your location it could be helpful to determine when and if it might be ok to crack a window for ventilation and which side of the shelter would be better to do so. Of course a weather/emergency radio to keep updated if there is any info available. Also check out alcohol fuels they are very safe to burn inside. They don't put off at harmful vapors, of course i would think anything that burns would consume oxygen but alcohol fuels may be the safest. These are just some thoughts i hope some of this is helpful!

@@tiffanychappel6294 The "shelter" (basement or else) is both against blast tornado etc effects, and, which is the point, preventing contaminated air to penetrate inside (for chemical and nuclear event, civilian or military). Fall out rain is not only coarse dust but also fine particulates that can be contaminated, or particulate in environment cross contaminated. This is why a particulate filter - N99 P100 - is used both in Fukushima area or Kazakhstan nuclear test areas, even years or decades after. You must add in a nuke warhead event the toxic fumes from the blasted area and burnt down, and this for days, weeks, even months (I have an example from an industrial fire). So any serious shelter must be fit with HEPA filter and if possible active charcoal filter. Pump, noth eletric and manual. Anita former RN nurse trained in hazmat emergencies. Indeed in a tight sealed room, you canr survive more than a short time, before lack of oxygen, CO and moisture. All the so called "preppers" thinking to get a tight sealed room for 1day + are telling hazardous things.
