I see lots of people asking what your prepping for. People have short memories. This last Winter Texans where out of power in exatreme cold. Many didn’t have food or water due to frozen pipes. Totally unprepared. I live in Southern California on the San Andreas Fault. A large earthquake just waiting to happen. New York had record rains and flooding last month. To top it off with the Pandemic the world seems a little crazy. We’re headed for food shortages. Everyone should be prepared for the unexpected no matter where you live.

I think you misunderstood the questions. No one was questioning being prepared with water, extra food etc in case of emergency. I, for one, was curious about why the backpacks to go. I questioned if it was for hurricane, wildfire etc areas or were people doing that in all areas. I have an emergency backup of necessities in case of power outages, snow, ice etc but it is home based. I think most of us was just curious as to the “go bags.” I hadn’t ever thought of maybe needing something like that.
@JamerrillStewart
@JamerrillStewart 3 года назад
@@donnakuester2212 even the US government suggests that families pack a 72 hour bag for each person in case they have to "go." Here is the information on National Preparedness Month including the government supply lists (including many extras I don't yet have in my bags) www.ready.gov/september and here's the government’s information on building a kit (notice the pictures of a bookbag...they mention duffle bags) www.ready.gov/kit - so my thinking isn't out of nowhere or so far off. I've also lived in an area with a heavy wildfire and at that time (a couple years ago) wished I had go bags.

I live in Texas and went through the winter freeze with intact electricity but NO water for 5 days. Thank goodness I was prepared. I lived in Houston 21 years before so I have been prepared for Hurricanes and power outages. Up here in North Texas it’s crazy Tornados and thunderstorms that knock out power and cause damage. Never could have imagined the winter storm...ALWAYS BE PREPARED for emergency situations and weather. You will be so Thankful you have what you need at the time. Everyone panics last minute and shelves are empty. You have to be prepared because I promise no one is going to help you. You have to prepare and be ready. I have never done backpacks but have an emergency closet with essential things. Such an informative video. If I had 9 kids I would be making these bags🙂 Thanks Jamerrill🌻

We put a 12 oz. ginger ale in everyone's pack along with some ginger chews. We figure we are going to be using these packs under stressful situations and in our family stress causes tummy woes, so better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I think you have done a fine job getting these packs together. Every family has to make their packs according to their own family.

The last two or three years we’ve been adding little things to everyone’s Christmas stockings. The fire starters, the filter drinking straws along with the emergency blankets just to name a few. It feels practical and I might add fun to be collecting these things and making everyone their bug out bags. Also consider putting cash in each bag.

For everyone: don't forget to pay attention to dates when buying your supplies & check, rotate/replace everything at least 3xs a year (I make a list of everything that expires so i know what to replace w/o pulling everything out). Re nametags....put them on the bags in an inconspicuous place, so they can't be easily read at a glance. It's a common tactic for child abductors to call the child by name to get him/her to trust and go with the stranger. In a situation where the bags might be needed, like an evacuation, it might just happen that a child gets separated from the parent, and would be "easy prey" so to speak.

This consept is so foreign to me as a Scandinavian . We hardly get power cuts anymore, if so only for a few hours , so I tend not to worry. I’ve lived through several hurricanes and been snowed in yearly the first 16 years of my life.our water also froze regularly in winter . We had a pantry and cold storage for our vegetables. We also had cured ham and mutton hanging in our cellar. So we had plenty of food. Our neighbors brought us water and fresh food on snow mobiles and delivered through our first floor window😂😂 But never thought of emergency back packs for now a days. As someone who have done a little mountain hiking for several days at a time, I would highly recommend packing freeze dried meals , dried fruit and dark protein chocolates instead of things like canned goods and fruit cups who can easily get squashed when packed. It’s going to be way too heavy to carry especially for the children if you have to walk or god forbid flee an area in a hurry. I’d focused on things like water cleaner tablets, army knives , flashlights, batteries,fire starter cubes and matches packed in water proof wrapping . Emergency kits would include antibiotics and strong painkillers, bandages and suture needle and tread, I would bring stainless steel cutlery and bottles , not things that can easily break. They’re useless in an emergency . And of course waterproof covers for your backpack and several change of socks… Wet feet make painful blisters and increase your chances of getting pneumonia .
@janet5551

Yes its all foreign to me as well here in Australia. Besides important documents I cant see us being stuck somewhere were we would need all these things.. we have had major bush fires here and people have had to flee but they just take their pets or in the case of farm animals others have rescued horses etc. I cannot understand how if you had to flee in the case of a tornado or something that you would be stranded somewhere needing to use all these things..
@MusingsofFamily
@MusingsofFamily 3 года назад
@@janet5551 Agreed. Here in the USA you have to ask yourself why you are leaving, why there is nowhere to go, no family, friends, hotels etc. And if that is the case, three days of supplies is a joke. I've never understood bug out bags (or 72 hour bags) for this reason.

I love these videos. You've shared some great ideas. Something I did when I put our kits together was include a "menu" in each kit. It listed out what food was supposed to go with each meal. I also suggested (just in case I'm not there) that people can pool the food to help it last. For instance, if there's a younger child that can't eat an entire meal, share one meal with two kids. It will prevent leftovers or wasting food, as well as help food go farther. I put a little note on there as well.

And they will be very bulky if you’re looking just go from house to vehicle. You may want to consider things like dried fruits instead of the containers of fruit in syrup. Dried meats like jerkies and smoked fish. The peanut butter packets instead of the Jiffy containers. Freeze dried meal packets are great too.

I agree with you, however I’m thinking these packs are not meant to be carried but stuffed into a van with all of the kids. Otherwise I would have kits individualized to the child’s ages, carrying capacity. She seems focused on what the kids are familiar with, I would recommend getting the kids familiar with Mountain House meals. People have to start somewhere, she is off to a good start. She might also want to get some emergency bevy sacks. They are light, small and really work.

It's totally okay if it's not the "cute" stuff others have. It just needs to be tailored to your particular family's needs, be calorie-dense, and get you through the first 72hrs (the idea being that after that, things will settle down and some type of assistance will be available/further direction will be given). I like items that serve one or more functions. The bag should be very portable and not too heavy. I tend to go with food bars and dehydrated foods because they are light, take up less space, and create less trash, but everyone is different. Practice how to use things you may not be familiar with...don't want to be figuring it out when the time comes. I always recommend CPR and first aid classes as part of preparedness. Also don't forget your important documents!! Hope this helps! (I'm an emt/firefighter who also does CERT and wilderness SAR.)

I haven’t seen too many survival grab and go videos, but I’m glad you’ve included food that yours includes food that your family eats everyday. Some people get those army MREs, and while those might do in a pinch, aren’t as tasty as one would like, or as handy for a larger family.

In those tuna packs they now have ones with grains and stuff in them too. They are great emergency meals, I keep a couple in my diaper bag.

Those food packs look great to add to your emergency bags! I think it’s good that you’re putting extra plastic ware in the food packs especially with little one they could drop the other ones and get dirty you may not want to waste water washing them off or they could loose them! The big ziplock bags after you finish your meal will be great to have! Whoo hoo we’ll get a third video!!

DollarTree glow stick bracelets or necklaces...fun for the kids and a great way to keep track of the kids if you had to bug out in the night time. All of your ideas are great, I would switch day one with day three so heaviest stuff is consumed first and maybe toss in a couple of sandwich bags for leftovers and wet washcloths.

Juice box or milk box (self stable) or those little packs to add to water bottle maybe more helpful than hot chocolate packs since they require hot water.

You do great great job with everything you do Jamerill, it is always done with love and care. I think you could benefit from investing in a Freeze Dryer for food preservation and preparedness. Here in NZ it is a bit harder to find them and they are pricier. I have a big family too and totally understand the extra effort it takes to have them all safe, watered and feed. Much blessings to you and your family.

If you have a vacuum sealer, you can use it to seal bulky items like clothes. It will save space and keep them dry should the backpack gets wet. It could also be used to put the meals in, instead of storage bags.

Two things I would recommend to add to your emergency meal bags… is a styrofoam or heavy paper plate for bags with the chicken/rice/stew meal bags… such a sanity saver and Pennies on the dollar to add. As well as individual alcohol wipes/or sanitizer wipes for each bag… in an emergency situation cleanliness may be compromised and digging through the bag to get liquid sanitizer or larger packs of wipes is an extra added hassle esp with lots of kiddos. 😊 These things have worked well for me in these situations ie camping or at home without electricity during snow storms. Loving your content lately! 😊

Fabulous planning! I’m just a bit worried about who is going to carry these bags though. They are going to be so heavy. Hopefully you won’t have to walk and carry them. Don’t forget water. 🙂
@FilippaSkog
@FilippaSkog 3 года назад
This is my concern too. The backpacks should really be light enough for everyone to carry it basically by themselves. Even without all the heavy food there’s already too much in each backpack: having a pack of playing cards, a brush and several other non necessities EACH isn’t sensible… but she probably figured that out when she packed the bags and realised there’s no way Daniel and Benji could carry their own bags for any length of time with that much stuff in them. She’s replied in another comment that she’ll change food items out every six months and will tweak things then though.
@thebrutonfamily4231
@thebrutonfamily4231 3 года назад
I think it’s also a way to store it. We have two main bags with all the heavy items for myself and my husband to carry. Then I’ve broken the kids down Into the smaller and lighter items. In each bag they have light foods, tooth brush/paste, small first aid etc. I packed the bags based on each child’s talents as well. My 10 year old daughter is great at wound care and thinking rational. So she’s carrying the medical stuff. My 14 year old son can start fires and build well. So he has the tactical stuff. My 9 year old has comfort items in hers and water supplies.
@JamerrillStewart

@@FilippaSkog I didn't exactly plan that the few smaller kiddos would have to carry their bags. There are lots of big kids and adults that could help with that if needed.

We live in Louisiana! So their is always the need for being prepared! Hurricane season from June-November. Tornados spin off the hurricanes. Then winter is ice storms! Last august was hurricane Laura, we were with out electricity for 17 days, January of this year I’ve storm was out of electricity for 15 days! This august was Ida we were prepared but thank you Jesus we weren’t affected. But all of south Louisiana was destroyed 😢

After Hurricane Ida I’m rethinking how to keep my family safe. I had supplies together but no enough for amount of time without water and power. We stayed for the hurricane and we’re out of power for 14 days. It was hard on our four kids and two dogs. But the can goods were okay but I need to find better ideas. We also had ramen noodles. We lost everything in freezer and refrigerator unfortunately and can’t get the insurance to pay. I learned so much and feel discouraged. But I know so many other people here in Louisiana have it worse. Financially this killed our savings actually it’s gone.

Add a bag of instant Idaho homestyle butter potatoes to go with the beef stew as the base for each kid. And dont forget those cooked bags of rice can be inserted entirely into boiling water for 5 minutes, while at home I add a 1/3 cup of water and microwave for 4 to 6 extra minutes, I find the rice too hard. The dollar store near us here in Oregon has Saffron road delhi vegetables, and a tikka masala chickpeas, my kids and I like the delhi potatoes and vegetables as they have 3 veg in it, we put the curries over those uncle Ben's ready rices.

Love it. Great job but would consider taking the powder candy straws out. They easily bend and spill everywhere making a huge mess you wouldnt want to deal with :( a bandana would be a great thing to add for face cover if needed, sweating, napkin ect. The weight for younger kids is alot with the cans but they will have the fuel to carry it in food.

For the little ones, maybe a backpack with wheels. If they have to walk, they could pull it easier. For mama and adults could have a hot chocolate with the instant coffee for a yummy drink.
