Can you alter the shape of an EMG pickup without ruining it? In this episode we'll grind down a EMG pickup, and see whats inside. We will remove part of the EMG shell to fit the 40 Sized humbucker EMG into a P2 pickup route used by brands like Bartolini and Nordstrand.

The Comrade is back! :D I've bought EMG 40 X-series pickups to replace the stock Jackson humbuckers in my 5-string, and surprise-surprise, EMGs appeared to be about 1mm larger than the stock pups. So I had to take off layers of lacquer and paint in the cavities to make room for the new electronics. Was a PITA to do (and then I had to "marry" EMG's QuickConnect with the onboard preamp that has solder connections only), took about 8 hours altogether, but I'm more than happy with the result. This bass is finally the instrument worth playing, and keeping :)

Glad to hear you found your right bass. Amazing what can happen if you modify something to fit you, rather than always uying the newest shiny thing.

Great Episode Rodney. This could be like the bass version of Monster Garage. I appreciate you sharing your experience in making modifications to a bass. It reminds me of how EVH would modify his guitars to get the sound and playability he wanted. Good Stuff !

I just wish emg would make bartolini and nordstrand sized pickups. As well as a version of the MM type pickup where it would fit in basses like the stiletto stealth 5 from schecter. Just a thought lol

I've brought up the point with them. It mostly comes down to guaranteed demand. It costs a lot to make a ne line of gear, and in tough economic times, you need to be sure it will pay off for the investment.

This actually sounds like a job for a Bridgeport (most machine shops have one). Machine tolerance can get within .003 of an inch. May take a minute and few passes but I'm sure I could do it with a sharp end mill.

Just route the bass imo, being that I build guitars and basses I think I have pretty good insight on this because pickups tend to be very delicate and I only buy a bass if I know I'm going to keep it. As far as like the shell of the bass if I decide to change something about it like the pickups I like to make my instruments unique if I'm going to mod it anyway just route it for your preferred pickups maybe play with the neck shape if desired and slap a cool paintjob on it and boom you have something nobody else does that's your own thing

@@roberthofmann932 yeah I did, I see that he got away with it. My point is that if you're going to commit to a bass you should just get it routed and do stuff to it and make it yours , if you're walking on thin ice you might as well dance as it were.

What are the dimensions of the pickups now, after everything is said and done? How much room is there in the pickup rout? I've got a few Ibanez basses that I'd like to change the pickups on and any info is always helpful.

You don't want to go off my personal measurements. I was pushing things a bit. Plus, my route size may not be the same as yours. When you're dealing with a small tolerance, you want to measure your route, and keep measuring the pickup as you sand to take off the least amount of material needed.

Thanks very much for this! I was thinking of having my bass routed to install EMGs. At the end of the day, I liked my tone enough to stay with the Barts. I'll never understand why they don't make stuff like this universal.

I've literally been planning on doing this for months. I have a ibanez sr500 that I want to put emgs in. Did the emgs work with the ibanez preamp. Killer video man loved this channel. I wanted to try and route the cavities buy this might be easier.

I didn't hook them into the preamp, but there's no reason it wouldn't work.
