Hi Stefan i build over the last half a year my DIY Mini Surface Grinder step by step and was very satisfied as I saw that you have this video online .Now that I'm close to ready I just needed such a good video teaching me how to make the Wheel arbors cause I didn't want to design my own 😎🤠 thank you for your good work and good explaining ☺️👍 P.S. I made the chuck backstop the time you put the video about it online and they are worth their weight in gold specially when you have more than one part to work with 🤓👍
I've been retired for over 10 years and miss the shop, I did have a similar project and made a special adapter where the adapter tapered on both sides and a bushing that fit the front end with same taper , once tightened with spindle nut it held on. noticed you use a diamond wheel on the cutter grinder to sharpen hi speed tool, bad idea you'll ruin the diamond wheelBorazon is for steel, diamond for carbide
I learned some very useful things in this one. How to use a scraper, and I never thought of using my tool and cutter grinder by hand like that. I'm also seriously tempted to do that chuck mod. It is really good.
Awesome timing! I have been trying to come up with a plan for arbors on my Elliot 8-20 surface grinder, you have done an excellent job here thank you JBFromOZ
I don't need to make this because I was clever enough to inherit a universal grinder (surface grinder and tool & cutter grinder in one). Also I don't have any fixtures for using it except the mag chuck, no clue how to use any if I did, and it does not have interchangeable arbors. Basically I have a surface grinder with a head and table which can be independently angled should that ever interest me. And no way to avoid re-dressing wheels every time I mount them. But I saved a lot of money! :)
I have an overwhelming feeling like he low-key was showing off the work stops on his Chuck which btw are time savers and eliminates having to indicate your work every single time...
Hi Stefan, Looks like nutella sandkuchen, but you need raspberries and powdered sugar, on a diet? New series Stefan in the Küchen, but he will show how to build pots and pans. Waiting for Part 2.
I'd suggest that he watch Chandler Dickenson on forging fry pans, for a new take on metal work, but he would drive himself crazy checking for run out with the dial indicator ... ;-)
Stefan, what Kyocera insert were you using? I'm picking tooling for my WWII South Bend 16" x 60" lathe with a non-stock 3hp motor and rated max spindle speed
So, I have to ask, is the music an homage to Simon Gruber? Every time I hear that music I imagine front loaders piling gold bars into the back of dump trucks :)
Are you sure you are making the relief deep enough? The relief should be flexible enough to allow for thermal axial expansion of the grind stone without too much pressure. My experience is limited to bench grinders and table saws, so the standard thickness on surface grinders should be correct. Probably not an issue on the aluminum bodied grindstone you showed.
Always enjoy your content. 'One day' I'd like to hear your thoughts on the what I suspect is Chinese tool/cutter grinder. Any modifications, shortcomings, tools you made using, cutters sharpened, different setup modes... etc.
Always interesting Stefan, I see what appears to be components to your 5C indexer and a couple disks, are you planning on making different index plates for it?
Hope you are ok :) Thats my lathe file, it has of course a file handle, it just didnt get into frame. And yes, I am filing right handed on this machine, as its small enough to do it safe. I would not do it on a machine with a 250mm chuck :)
Novice here: are you supposed to file with the chuck spinning the other way? so that in case the file snags it pierces the wall/shield instead of your chest?
Very well thought out part production set up on your lathe Stefan. So how long until you build or adapt a bed mounted turret setup from another small lathe. :-) Your idea or not it's still a clever way around the problem of having two grinders that spin in opposite directions.
Hi mate. I would have been very jealous of your lunch a few months ago, but now we have a German supermarket here and we can buy all those nice European goods again. How is this? Are you testing a carbide insert again? It looks like it's working quite well, though.
Hi Stefan, I've seen your videos and I admire you do wonderful stuff and you're very accurate, congratulations. I wanted to ask why you keep the tilt. Is it for greater precision? Or just why do you have to thread? A greeting soon. Fabio Sorry but unfortunately I have to use a translator.
That tailstock is sick! just wondering what type of T /C grinder do you have? mine and most of the one's iv used have a tapered spindle. excellent channel! !
I still don't quite get why you don't just pur the 'outside' jaws into the chuck and butt the parts against those instead of the back stops (or maybe I've forgotten earlier remarks about that?) ... WHAT no shaper for the key slot?
Stefan, I bought some used wheel adapters and found out some of them were right hand threads. I think I can machine a key similar to your solution but have a question. Did you notice any unbalance in the altered hubs?Thank you and keep up the great videos!
Stephan, Interesting tailstock .... Which you explain before the end of this sentence, ROFL, Did you make the tailstock? I see used lathes from time to time with missing tailstocks that seem to be for sale elsewhere for $4-500. There may be some interest in making an improved replacement.
Hi Stefan, thank you for this video. I also have a lip515 surface grinder and would like to find aditional wheel huds or adaptators. Could you produce them for me ?
Hello Stefan, what toolmaker's microscope do you use these days? Thank you for the video, in the process of making arbors for my Astra AR5-E T&C grinder.
Have you published any info on the lathe insert you're using? I have been looking for something for my 10x22, and it looks like you're getting good results.
I have a question on which I have found no answer...Why and when should we prefer a drill over an end mill? I've made a part which required plunging a 20mm end mill in the roughing process and the result got me wondering...Why drill?
Drills are cheaper and easier to sharpen. I've also heard that endmills don't like plunging very much. I would assume that has to do with the point angle keeps the drill where it should be, whereas the endmill is just relying on the rigidity of the tool and the machine. To put it another way, can you imagine trying to cut a hole using an endmill in a hand drill?
The cost problem is understandable bet the result made me consider it as it was almost like it got reamed without even making a pilot hole or a spot drill! Plus I always prefer to drill in the mill even thought it doesn't have a quill...
Not all end mills can plunge. Some do not cut in the very center, so if you try to plunge with them, they leave a plug in the very center and that plug will stop the downward travel once the cutting edge reaches the depth of the clearance of the center. Generally if you want to drill a hole in/thru something, a twist drill is preferred because you have a broad range of diameters to select from, they're reasonably accurate, they cost less than an end mill, can be easily sharpened, and can drill a deeper hole than a end mill of a similar diameter.
"When Jonny Comes Marching Home." It is am American Civil War song. Can't decide if eh is playing it as a quiet statement about our politics, or if he recently watched Die Hard With a Vengeance and is paying homage to Simon Gruber
Doesnt make much sense, as the machine has the sparkguard and the vacuum attachment on the left side. And also a surfacegrinder that runs opposite to every grinder around the world, thats not what I want ;)
