Just finished the game. I’ve got over 700 hours in Monster Hunter World. I play Destiny 2 (because I hate myself, apparently). As Skill Up mentions in his video...it’s good to stop the grinding for rare monster parts or exotic engrams and...just...breathe. Take some time out from the grind and treat yourself to this experience. It will move you.

Just finished this game and I gotta say : that's a masterpiece. Indie games like GRIS, Hollow Knight or Undertale always reminds me that you don't need to be a big company with 300+ people working on a single game. Although those are nice, indies are always here to remind us where videogame is coming from, maybe that's why I love indie games more than AAA games. And I sincerely hope there will always be indie studios to create games like the ones I just mentionned. So yes : please buy and support this game

Wow, man, so I started it up had my headphones on, thought I would play the first hour and here I am game completed and it was a truly a worthwhile journey Thank you Skill Up I never would have given this gem a try if not for your recommendation. This game out-Journey'd Journey for me. I love Journey deeply, but this game has so much more of a personal, emotional connection to it. The music alone is enough to well up the feels inside me til I'm ready to burst, and hte visual presentation leaves me feeling like a 5yr old in a theater. It is a masterpiece. It's levels pair with each theme so well that I felt it as I played. I cannot praise this game enough. Funny little story, I had bought it alongside 20XX but got addicted to that first, and kinda forgot I even downloaded Gris for a few days. Fast forward to the 26th of December, waking up after having ended Christmas with a horrible fight with my mother, and feeling absolutely wretched about my voice of all things (I'm trans, and I've put in a lot of work centered on my voice). So that was the state I was in when I finally turned this game on at 3 in the morning, and just... let it fill me. That first time I pressed A and heard that horse whisper really hit me. And I played the rest of the game in one sitting. This game is remarkable. By the end, I actually did feel better. So maybe thats a factor, but goddamn this game really touched me, and as such it earns the top spot on my list, even over Journey.

Several games have made me cry before, but this one hit me in that special cry-place. It was some real shit. Like he said, it's beautiful, fun to play, amazing to listen to. But it also really punches you in the feels a lot if you've lost anything or anyone in a big way.

I think it clearly shows from your reviews (especially from the Prey: Mooncrash review and this one) that you have a very high level of normal and emotional intelligence and you have a deep understanding of video games. Gaming journalists and influencers have a tremendous responsibility in forming the people's' taste and opinion and it's good to see that you are doing that in the best way possible. Although unfortunately, it can't be said about everyone. Just look at the people who work at IGN: a band full of pseudo-intellectual tastecriminals who don't know shit about games. They gave this game a 6.5, yet they gave Black Ops III a 9.2. They gave Alien: Isolation 5.9 for ridiculous reasons, but they gave Goat Simulator an 8... and the list goes on and on.

The fact that some people do not consider video game as a form of art is baffling, I know it is mostly because people only see the traditional video game but still I think video games could be the pinnacle of art as you could combine so many forms of arts into one media, the basic for example is music, be it as a background music or could be the core gameplay like in guitar hero or other rhythm games, All kind of sound, be it sound effect or voice acting is also important then we have Story, be it as a lore or a more traditional linear story like a book then drawing or painting for background, then 3d model for game is almost like sculpture, and the list goes on. Almost any kind of art could be made into a video game and I think that is awesome, I hope we will see more quality indie game or AA game because most AAA game is just too safe and boring with few exception.

にゃあエイリアンMeowAlien Video games are the pinnacle of art, IMO. They encompass music, cinematography, painting and sculpture (2D and 3D), photography, architecture and literature (storytelling). And unlike any other traditional art, they allow the person who experiences it to be part of it and shape it as it evolves. And unlike any other type of art form, we have to actually live it to get to the end (in books or movies or songs, we can skip to the end and read, see or listen to the finale).

The "video games are not art" thing was a throwaway line from Roger Ebert (who then said he regretted it because of how personally so many people took it), not some sort of industry wide artistic pushback :p

However, I recently saw full some of your videos, starting from this one, to some of your Destiny reviews, and I am really grateful for the work you have put into these videos. if you think this game doesn't look interesting or beautiful then i think that's just fine. not all people appreciate slow melodic music or do they enjoy paintings that are more abstract, if it's not to your taste than sure, it's an art and there's no real 'for everyone' or some perfect piece. the video is to show that this game and these types of games exist, and hopefully get your interest. if you're a person that loves action packed FPS's or RTS's, MMO's or something that's all on you i'd say it's a waste to not try these types of games if you haven't, such as Ori, Journey, ABZU, or even games like Oxenfree. but you do you, and don't muddy the water because you don't dig it

GRIS is a story of a loss and of learning how to move on. The colors and design of its 5 levels perfectly match the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The artist is a genius to be able to pull this off. One of the best indie games of the year for me.

A bit on the nose but for those who don't know spanish, Gris means Gray/Grey. Which is a neat way of contextualizing the game levels. The combination of the 3 primary colors(Red, Blue and Yellow) creates a very dark gray color. It also can be taken as a metaphor as the game is more than the sum of its parts because unlike a basic color wheel, which houses the 3 primary colors yet dividing them, the integration of these fundamental colors creates something new and wholly unique. Even the title of this game is beautiful in its simplicity.

Saw the description you posted, and heard the soundtrack in the first 10 seconds of the video. Decided this was one that should not be spoiled in the slightest because it was probably more of a auditory and visual journey than a "game" in the traditional sense. And I was right. And by god is it good. Bought the game and pretty much immediately bought the soundtrack thereafter, this game is art, and I could not be more thankful for it.

I had a game called "What remains of Edith Finch" in my Steam library for months never playing it, always had other games to play first and then I started it and several hours later I was done, one single playthrough and I was blown away, its sheer scope and brilliance, its storytelling and they way it told it, It was quite possibly the most amazing emotional experience a video game has ever impressed upon me and I remember telling my friends about it with passion and awe and a kind of sorrow because it made me cry in places and just talking about it made me feel like crying. My friends bought the game and called me after their playthroughs to just garble and stumble for words to describe the emotional rollercoaster they had just been on. And they and I all sounded (in a far more incoherent way) like you in this video. I was looking at Gris on Steam and wondering if any RU-vidr had played it and here I am listening to you speak in awe at this game in the way I and my friends tried to articulate how we felt about Edith Finch. I have just linked this video to my friends and I think we are all going to buy Gris based purely on your review so I wanted to say thank you, it looks and sounds wonderful and if we get the same emotional ride then that three and a half hours journey you mentioned will be worth every penny.

@@Retrosenescent I don't hate IGN. They are the gaming equivalent of Entertainment Weekly: they have colorful graphics, hot takes, a daily segment with an attractive female host (Sydnee!), flattering interviews with gaming luminaries, unboxings, etc. But they don't have a 'voice', and if you want anything close to actual criticism of games or the gaming industry, then please look elsewhere. In many ways they are an extension of the industry itself. But IGN is fine to me, because I recognize and accept them for what they are. My issue with the IGN review of Gris is what I often find objectionable in many reviews, and something I often note in movie reviews: that the reviewer isn't basing the review on what the work itself presents, but on what they _expected_ the work to be. I recall reading a review of the movie Crimson Peak, and the writer gave a poor review because the movie wasn't 'scary enough'. Now the director, Guillermo Del Toro, stated publicly - many times - that what he was looking for in terms of feel with that film was that of a Bronte novel. So more 'Jane Eyre' and less, say, 'The Conjuring'. Saying that the movie isn't 'scary enough' therefore isn't a critique of the movie. It is, at best, a critique of your own expectations vs the movie that you actually watched. It is a critique of yourself. In the IGN review, Dan Crowd tips his hand early on by comparing the game to 'Celeste', a beautiful, well-crafted and very challenging platformer. Gris isn't Celeste, nor is it sequel to Celeste, and doesn't have any relation to Celeste apart from the fact that a.) it's pretty and b.) it's a platform game and c.) it's an indy game. But yet it's compared, and compared in such a way that the Celeste is the bar. And based on this bar, the game falls short. 6.5 out of 10. But this isn't really a critique of the game that you played, it is instead a critique of the game that you expected to play. It's a critique of the game that you actually didn't get to play. That really doesn't tell us much about the game itself. Therefore, your review is not particularly useful. Not only is it not a good review, it's not even a review. This IGN review gets 1/10.
