.
. Flying from Homer, Alaska over the Cook Inlet to see grizzly bears. There were several challenges along the way, and the conditions were less than ideal. Could we eventually find grizzly bears?

-----------------------------------------------
The big 'pilot episode' of the Angle of Attack Show. Yes, pun intended.
Alaska is full of adventure and wonder. Those who live here know that adventure can happen not too far away from home. This land is still vastly wild and untamed.
Today we have a mission -- bears. While the title says Grizzly bears, they're technically Coastal Brown Bears. Are they still huge, scary, and dangerous? Absolutely. But even bears get a bad name, as these creatures are not totally unlike us.
Just on the other side of the Cook Inlet, a short flight from Homer, Alaska where Angle of Attack is based, there is world class bear viewing. People travel to Homer in droves to take an airplane over to this wild land. It's literally a 30 minute flight, and you're suddenly in a world that is very different.
Chelsea and I were joined by Patrick Carter of nFlightCam. He's an experienced aviator, having flown for Cessna, aerobatics and aerial tours in Denali National Park, just to name a few.
Patrick is the caretaker of a Cessna 185. This is a really capable airplane, but the one trouble we have is that it doesn't have bush wheels. That means our landing surfaces are limited. Since our plan was to land on a beach, we had to be very careful.
Turns out we ended up getting stuck on the beach, and had to drag ourselves out of it.
Eventually it all worked out, and we were able to head out to see the bears.
Well, it didn't disappoint. On the video itself can do a justice.
We hope you enjoy this episode!

Why the little standard tires on the 185 ? Looks like its based in LA not Fairbanks; those “toy tires” are worthless in Alaska; no wonder you got stuck on the beach-

@earlpuppy
@earlpuppy 4 года назад
Angle of Attack I'm sorry. The "/s" was meant to indicate sarcasm. You don't have to go as far as to come between a sow and her cubs. Momma bears are unpredictable. They are not lovable teddy bears. Granted these bears may be well accustomed to the presence of humans but that is more the reason to steer well clear. Again, sorry to have to disagree. Being raised around wildlife I have a great love and appreciation for them. Young animals suffer greatly when the mother gets killed. You would have to shoot her if she decided you were a threat. Steer well clear.

Great commentary & narrating Chris on a beautiful place and my favorite thing to do, FLYING. I got my Private ticket in 1978, (here in Maine) flew 150, 152, 172 Cessna Skyhawk, and fell in love with and owned a 1946 Taylorcraft BC-12-D (N95040) with a 65 horse Continental. I never had so much fun in my life. I remember with a strong headwind, literally flying backwards. Keep up the great work, Chris and I am looking forward to more great adventures. At 73, I sure miss the freedom of flight....BUT, who knows, maybe I'll win the lottery and buy a new Super Cub on floats lol. The best Chris, and don't forget the Carburetor heat....lol

Then flying out and seeing the climbers that looked like ants!!!

Nice video. Surprised to see that many bears this early in the season in 'nitna! If you ever head to Lake Clark again and it's a smooth day, head around the back side of Iliamna and there is an absolutely gorgeous valley you can fly through that dumps right into the head of Chinitna Bay. I never got sick of it. I would highly recommend a trip to Katmai to check out the beaches and bears there, too! Much better in every way in my opinion, but it's a bit more of a hike from Homer.

Chelsea, I had some mild issues the first few times I spent time in small aircraft. Anti-nausea meds at the store are basically super high concentration sugar/high fructose corn syrup. I found for me a 3 Muskateers candy bar did the trick. Zofran is also an option. It is a med you can get from a doc that is safe and doesn't have the drowsiness side effect like others of its kind. It's a "Wow" medication.

If someone who suffers travel sickness wears a cumberbund or a tight towel around the mid-drift it will hold the stomach in place and stops the humpback bridge feeling. Helps sickness massively.

There was an Indian pilot guide { Ed } from Wasilla who used to fly out of Big Lake , Ak, in the 70s , 80s etc and he made the mistake of loading a moose in his 170 cessna B model at night , so he could get an early start back home in the morning. Mr. Grizzly bear , at night had a different idea. By the time Ed got to his plane , the big brown bear had destroyed the center fuselage and the 170 was hinged in the middle - lol Ed , the Alaskan he was used some black spruce poles to mend the fuselage and tail feather cables - and flew it back home. Ed told me that he learned his lesson on loading any meat in the plane , until - take off . I flew a 170 also.

Great video and commentary, but a couple of suggestions. You obviously discovered why you don't land, or even taxi fast, high on the beach. A couple of 206's went up on their noses right there doing what you did, so you lucked out. I'd advise talking to the guys who do this for a living so you don't have to learn the hard way. There are quite a number of them in Homer. FYI, there are NO villages anywhere that you can drive to from that beach - the vehicle tracks are from the van the lodge uses to transport their clients up and down the beach. By the way, 8.50's are fine on that beach as long as you land where it's hard.
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 6 лет назад
Yup. A lot of lessons learned here. It was a steep learning curve after this. We got really connected with the community and found out a lot more about these areas. The locals are all for sharing their tricks of the trade. I was around when those 206s nosed over. Bad news bears.

First off, stiff winds off a large body of water are generally smooth and steady and can be used at a great advantage, when you can find a landing area that is closely oriented to them. 2nd Landing on sketchy surfaces in a heavy.. (relatively) airplane, with those tires is a crap shoot and puts you and your px at a high a risk for disaster. Go to at least 8:50's, but if your serious about this type of flying for a life, get proper bush wheels, They are worth every penny in assurance and will expand the capabilities of you and your aircraft.
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 7 лет назад
Those were 8.50s. And yeah, we learned a ton of lessons from this trip. That isn't that type of landing I would attempt, but Patrick is a very, very experienced pilot (former Cessna test pilot, etc). Again, lots of lessons learned.
@Flightstar

WHY were you NOT in a float plane??the wheels are to small,the mud is to deep and water everywhere?????????
@daveoberg6985
@daveoberg6985 6 лет назад
The bay they went to is not floatplane friendly. It is very shallow, and if the tide is out it is almost dry. If the plane goes dry while bearwatching you get to wait 6 hours for it to float again.

Chris I was honestly getting frustrated with your podcast and I'm super glad I stopped bye and watched. Like Steve said you have a very distinct style and I'm very impressed! I think video editing is as difficult as learning to fly lol Your wife is adorable, and the music was really well done . Personally I think the life vests should have been worn before crossing, but that's just me. God Bless and I'll be waiting for the next vid.

Thanks for the thoughts. These things can glide quite a ways, so the life vests were probably fine. When I'm operating closer to water, like shoreline type stuff, I certainly keep it on. Always a must for any floatplane. Glad you're no longer frustrated!

As an aviation safety advocate I am pretty dismayed at this video. Passengers were not briefed before t/o about floatations devices before crossing open water. Wrong sized tires, looks like 800's vs. minimum 850's for beach landings. The list goes on. Please do not promote this like it is fun and safe. I have flown over 40 years and none of the above apply. The sad part is FAA will get involved after an accident, not before. I would never allow any of my family to fly with anyone operating this way. Please start using safety first. You are doing a disservice to vacationers desiring to go out and have some fun in Alaska. Don't make it their last.

Grant, you're not God's gift to the earth. Regardless of what you think, we're safe pilots. Exploring the limits of aviation can be done with a lot of caution, and we took plenty here. These were 850s on the beach. Anyway, I don't know what being a 'safety advocate' means, but we're all advocates of and practice safety constantly. Being a Monday Morning Quarterback doesn't help anyone.

My two cents: You need to be wearing the vest un-inflated too egress out of the aircraft. Whatever you want to make the beach with you needs to be on you. Have a plan on getting out the raft, if you lucky. Brief passengers on upside down /right side up High wing/Low wing.Summer time you need fire starter, winter your lucky too make the beach even if your close. Climb high for crossing, gliding distance for paralleling the beach. What ever else you can think of ie. Waterproof Grab Bag with survival gear, ELT ,Sat Phone, Spot,Handheld Radio. Minimize the risks as much as possible. Bush wheels are great but Knowing the beaches is more critical, such as soft/hard areas, wet/dry, rocks, logs,holes, tides, length/slope,winds ect.. Some of the wet hard pack sand can be like cement and some of it can be like quicksand. You can always drag the beach and come back and check the tracks.
