"What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?" --Groundhog Day (1993) Thanks for watching! Visit / whimsory for full-length reactions! (Must bring your own copy!)
He learned to be a better man. That's what ended the loop. Didn't you notice that the first thing he did in the loop was countless days of hedonism? Then after that, he settled into depression, and tried to kill himself. Then he shifted to learning new skills, and finally into being selfless. He ended his last day of his loop by admitting that he took joy in all the good he did. "Even if tomorrow never comes, i'm happy now." It's a story of being a better person.
"I don't even like myself." That moment of honesty disguised as humor is key. In my opinion, Phil's day only stops resetting once he comes to truly like and accept himself.
If he accepted AND LIKED himself he wouldnt change ... but he did, because he realised that he didnt like himself ... or rather: he was given the opportunity to "see all possible futures" and made the necessary changes to get the jackpot.
@@Muck006 His repeating of the day, was somebody earning a month of learning to end a habit. But I hope she doesn't wander off and push him to throw the cards hes earned in the air. Or him messing it up, and losing her.
Filmed in my hometown of Woodstock, Illinois; lived a couple houses down from the B&B he stays in (every time he looks out the window that's my folks' house the second on the right). I was around ten years old and having two Ghostbusters come to town and make a movie that I could watch the filming of from my backyard blew my mind. So many great associations tied to this movie for me and I love getting to vicariously watch it again for the first time through someone else's eyes; loved your reaction!
There are lots of theories on how long he was trapped. Harold Ramis (the director) said it was 10 years. Some people have worked out, because of everything he learned to do, that it was over 30 years. I read somewhere that the script had it set at 10,000 years. Needless to say, it was a very long time. As for what caused the loop to break, it was probably because he finally became a good person.
Sad thing is that everyone in the universe was also trapped in that day and didn't know it. I would go mad with every day being the same wintery day for countless days on end and seeing the same people, never mind never having a hot shower LOL
Actually Harold Ramis said it was 10,000 years. He was a Buddist and they believe it takes 10,000 years to perfect the human soul, which is what this move was about.
I love when he's in his robe, drinking jack daniels straight out of the bottle, giving all the answers to jeopardy, and he dead ass stares the lady down and tells her the answer before the question gets asked.
I had forgotten how good this movie was....and I'm quickly becoming a fan of your movie reactions. :) Oh, and yes, who doesn't check the shower before they hop in???
If I were trapped in a time loop with this woman, I wouldn't want it to never end. She is GORGEOUS, funny, genuine, witty, attentive, soft spoken, stylish, natural, plain, & I can't stop binge watching her reactions. Opposites attract & I'm def attracted to her energy. Great reaction as always to a classic movie.
Literally as was reaching for my home button after watching a video I said "Come on Whimsory where are you?" And there you were. Posted 14 seconds ago.....
For another time loop film, The Edge of Tomorrow is a good watch And yeah Phil had to be in there for 100s or 1000s of years. One of my favourite bits is when Phil says "what would you do if every day was the same and nothing that you did mattered" and that drunk local says "well that pretty much sums it up for me" Like that's so bleak. And when the homeless guy keeps dying, it always gets me emotional
The 5 stages of Grief... Denial 7:22, Anger 8:24, Bargaining 14:20, Depression 20:02, Acceptance 24:18. He completed all 5 stages & became a better man for it. (***A man who could love, & be loved.***) Something he was unable to comprehend, prior to his unusual, 'Karmatic Therapy'.
Groundhog Day, what a movie! A real event in the real world. A weather-forecasting-animal-event, brought to america by the Pennsylvania dutch/deutsch (Germans speaking deutsch not dutch like the Netherlanders). In the original it was called "badger Day" (Dachstag). But there were no badgers in Pennsylvania back in the days, so the groundhog got the job.
Dude, you copy&paste this comment under every React video on Groundhog day. I've seen it at least under the videos of "Addie Counts", "Dawn Marie", "Trixy Blue" and now here. Do you really need to let everyone know that the tradition has German origins and point out that you are German with a flag in your profile picture to get credit for it?
@@yasminesteinbauer8565 whats weirder him posting it or you stalking it. So what he happens to love being German and it gives him joy to express this fact to different people. Sharing experiences is literally why we watch reaction videos.
I just realized maybe you wanted to be the one to state this fact. I wish you luck in beating him to the next Groundhog Day reaction video. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who watches multiple people watch the same video and looking for different experiences they have or the same.
@@williammendoza1191 Or is it weird that you feel so affected by my comment that you rush to his defense in not one, but two comments?🤷♂ Maybe we're all a little weird? I'm not stalking him at all. I see his same text block comments all the time under videos. He could at least make the effort to respond individually to the video. And no, I'm not interested in playing Wikipedia.
I feel like a lot of us are stuck in a metaphorical loop, especially as you get older and settle into a routine, doing the same thing day in and day out with less and less variation. The movie is telling us that no matter your situation you can get out of your rut and learn to become a better person, and break your bad habits. At least that's what I take from it. I know I'm quite guilty of getting stuck and not feeling like anything different is possible.
Yes, Whimsory, *_every_* sane person tests the temperature of a shower before getting in! If your water heater is older, then you might just freeze yourself if the dishwasher/washing machine/other residents have used most of the hot water. And if your water heater is fairly new, like ours, then you could actually scald yourself, which is much, much worse! 🤕
Whimsory, please never change! you are fun, quirky, down-to-earth and even weird ( in a good way). You bring a smile to my face each time I watch one of your reactions. Thank you for reacting and all the extra effort ls you make before your final thoughts. Anyhow.....this movie is one of my favs. some say Phil has been stuck in that one day for at least 34years.
Haven't seen this in AGES. Having learned so much about philosophy, morals, and ethics since then, it's even more interesting. Also, your reactions really elevate the enjoyability of an already great movie. Keep doing you 👍
So funny. You are the 2nd reactor, that I've seen, to explain in their intro that they know Groundhog's Day means like deja vu, and then is totally surprised when he starts reliving his day.
This reaction is another home run by you. Your infectious smile and joy in these movies makes these videos that much better. Your editing, and adding in those little hilarious touches, is top notch and keeps me rolling laughing. In such a short time, Whimsory, you've become one of my favorite reactors. Looking forward to the next video! Take care! 😆 P.S. With your comment about your alarm music and then how you saw Phil playing the piano at the dance and commented how that's what you would do since you're a pianist, I heartily recommend watching the incomparable movie Amadeus, based on Mozart and his music. It's definitely on your IMDB list as it won numerous Academy Awards. Hope you get to that one soon! 😊
Some people calculated how long Phil spent in the time loop based on everything he learned and experienced before he broke the time loop; their best guess was around 29 or 30 years of the same day, over and over.
As a guitarist, you have to build the calluses and keeping playing so you don’t lose the calluses. It’s kinda a metaphor for life, if you think about it. Things worth having usually aren’t “easy”, achieving difficult things usually are, because they allow us to grow, and you need some emotional calluses to continue to grow and try and fail and to keep trying until you succeed.
Thank you for this reaction Whimsory! Also, you've confirmed something that I suspected about you: I thought that you might be a genuinely polite and nice person, and you confirmed that when you pointed out that it was rude of Phil to break the hotel's pencil.
2:07 *Blood sausage* (or black pudding in the UK, it's a traditional part of English breakfeast, a left over from the Vikings invading the poor Brits) is a sausage filled with animal's blood (yep!) that is cooked or dried and then mixed with a filler, e.g. a cereal, until it is thick enough to solidify when cooled. The blood may come from pigs, sheep, lamb, cow, chicken or goose. Around my way in Denmark the pig version is a traditional Christmas dish, where you roast thick slices of it in butter and sugar.
This was filmed in Woodstock IL, just one town to the north of where I grew up. A friend of mine was an extra and was in front of the camera all the time....only to have all of the scenes get cut lol.
Phil finally, genuinely became a better person for himself and for those he cared about and he was allowed out of his cage... kind of a cage of his own making.
What if there is no tomorrow? there wasn't one today. This one's a classic, I've seen it many times over the years. I like your natural reactions, you don't over do it like many reaction channels do, looking forward to more.
You never fail to make me smile. Thank you for that. You had the reaction most of us did, imagining what we would do if we could keep living the same day over and over. I remember wishing I could switch places with him, thinking I would never get tired of it, just so many possibilities, and I'd want to try them all.
I mean, even without a blizzard, *TRAVEL* would specifically be the one thing you couldn't do, if you were in his situation. Even assuming there's a flight today to... anywhere... and that you're close enough to the airport to get it... you'd basically spend the day traveling, you'd be tired when you get there, you wouldn't see much (if anything at all), and then you'd start over. 😅
Great reaction! Love the vibe to your videos. He doesn't speak a few sentences of French. That's the first real glimpse of how long he's been there. How long would it take you to become fluent in french? As you go through the movie, you see him lean French, piano, ice sculpting... all kinds of things. There's one point where they are sitting on the bed, throwing cards in a hat. She says she'll never be able to do it, and he replies "six months, tops". He knows because that's how long he's been there learning it.
The question is not "What would you do?" The question is: "What will you do?" You are mortal, you have some several years left. Are you going to search for happiness or are you going to waste the chance you have? Easy to say - not so easy to do.
This was directed by "Egon" from Ghostbusters, and he said he was stuck in that day for at least ten years. It woukd be a lot easier to be stuck like that with access to the internet 😊
You said “who Dunnit “ during reaction to “The Thing”. There is no better mystery than “Clue”, I don’t think anyone gabs ever guessed the actual ending
Great choice, this is THE timeloop movie. Although there are earlier examples of this fascinating genre, it is probably the best known and most often referenced one. Other recommended entries encompass "Edge of Tomorrow", "Happy Death Day" or "Palm Springs" (movies), the X-Files episode "Monday", or the novels "Perfect Run" and "Mother of Learning".
The tv version of Stargate had a fairly comic episode based on the same premise, only the cause was scientific. They just had to figure it out in time, and didn't, for a long time. In their version, two people were involved: O'Neill & Teal'c. What happened when they realized there were no consequences was hysterical. It had a much lighter tone than this movie.
In 2005 I work on the tv show Prison Break in Chicago for a security company. We had to go to a location in Woodstock Illinois. We get to a location in Woodstock Illinois. I knew Groundhog Day was filmed in Woodstock. When I got to the location I was in the Groundhog Day location. I noticed the area. I said it’s Groundhog Day lol met so many actors for the show Prison Break. All actors were very nice to hang and talk to
Whimsory, here's my take on why that particular day finally broke the time loop. Phil finally learned the secret to life: serving others! Selfishness is our natural state, but only by putting others first do our actions have lasting value. 😀
So far, she's hit on movies that have a lot of reactions already. It will be interesting when she lands on something like #45 "Harakiri", which I don't see any reaction videos on YT for, yet, #52 "City Lights", where there's very few reactions, or one of the Ghibli films, which are notoriously difficult to get through copyright.
@@LlamaDungeon Heh, although I love Groundhog Day, I sort of wish she'd hit on #223 or #225 instead. *Those* would be fascinating reactions! Of course, I take the whole global IMDB ratings with a grain of salt. I mean, there's no Alfred Hitchcock in the top 20 films, no John Ford, no Stanley Kubrick, no Preston Sturges. There's no Buster Keaton, no Murnau, no Lubitsch, no Godard or Fellini or Renoir, no - well, I'm sure you get the point. 😉
Glad to see you get in to the movies, your video reactions are the best out there, you actually react and concentrate so well on those. You also seem so nice and sincere. Greetings From Finland!
I've heard of a deleted scene where an ex-girlfriend curses him, but honestly the movie is better leaving the situation ambiguous. I've also heard that they filmed this movie in a clever way -- of course, when there were many versions of the same scene, they shot those back-to-back, but in *reverse* chronological order, so Bill Murray would be fresh for the later versions and be getting tired and grumpy for the earlier versions. (I'd love to hear you play piano, btw.)
You are a breath of fresh air in the movie react channels! You are genuine and fun. Glad I found your channel. And I think he was there for 10 years plus.
Imagine being in a town where you know everyone and everything about them... Of course I'd want to live there.. --- Imagine if every time you lived your life, you were put right back to where you were started BUT you could remember everything that happened the previous times....
Hey girl shout out from the US Marine Corps! I absolutely love watching your reviews and I'm so glad you watched this movie. This was one of my favorites back in the day. If you ever get a chance watch the movie Happy Death Day. I'm not gonna tell you what it's above but you should watch it if you really like this movie. And yes I think it was because he became a better person because in the beginning of the movie he was ass and as the movie progressed he became a better and better person. Keep up the great reviews!
Another great choice for a reaction, coincidentally i was watching some other channel react to this one last night from an older video. Good luck with your channel xx
If you Google around there are a bunch of estimates about how long he was actually stuck in the loop based on the level of expertise he was able to gain in so many things
I love those estimations, but I just won't believe that interacting with reality in that way for such a long time as some of them theorize could leave behind anything we'd recognize as a human psyche like we see him retain through his experience. 😄
Also, a fun thing, one of the Miami Dolphins beat writers changes his Twitter AVI to a pic from this movie everytime they get eliminated from the playoffs
To be honest, I would probably do a few things for myself first. I am currently playing catch up, on all the things that I was supposed to learn as a teenager, due to years of foster care. I would also definitely throw myself out there and try to remedy my extreme anxiety, depression and shyness. I would learn the piano, violin and guitar. I would take vocal lessons, as well.
The old man scene is one of my favorite I get that teary eyed crying feeling everything it will happen in the reaction if you put it in here. Although I haven't ever seen anyone get emotional at it like I do. Bill Murray was always a favorite after that. He just try day after day and the last time he tries to save him the breathe pops breathe is the climax of the movie for me. The it's hard down there at the bottom is such a perfect double entendre
I think the director said it was supposed to be about 30 years, which is a really long time considering all he had to do was be selfless and care about others, haha. Love your personality and the way you say stuff, Whimsory. Also, I always check the water temperature before a shower! How could anyone not?
I have developed a theory about this movie having watched reactions to it over and over and over. I believe the time loop begins when Rita says to Phil at the beginning of the movie after he gives his first Groundhog's Day speech that he should do it again without the sarcasm. But when he disses her and grumpily says "We got it!" someone was apparently listening (her guardian angel perhaps or maybe his) and decided to curse him to relive the day until he actually did as she asked. And that is exactly what seems to have happened as we do not see him finally giving a good speech until the very last day.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. So glad you liked it. Also, I love the premise of your channel! I found you through this video, and now I'm subscribed. :)
Apparently he's in the loop for about ten thousand days. Thanks for another great reaction. 'Shine' is a great film about a pianistnif you haven't seen it, the 'Flight of the bumblebee' scene is one of my fave moments in cinema.
@@gallendugall8913 Yeah, I find that to be too long but the directors idea of about 30 years makes a bit more sense. Honestly IDK what he would do for 3,652,500 days if it was 10,000 years. 33 years seems way too long as well considering all he had to do to escape is be selfless. I feel like most people would start doing good things instead of bad things within a couple months or less.
I heard there was an early deleted scene where he goes to a library and decides to read a page a day, by the end of the movie he was supposed to have read every book in the library multiple times.
Hello Miss Whimsory !!! This is A Fun movie indeed 😁 Like Button 🔘 has been Illuminated !!! I Still say you would like Conan the Barbarian or V for Vendetta !
Whimsory thank you for another awesome reaction video. I'm glad that you enjoyed this movie... its one of my favorites. The actor who was the announcer at Gobbler's Knob is Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle Murray. Andie MacDowell who plays Rita is also in St. Elmo's Fire which is another great movie.
I really enjoy this movie, but I still find the ending weird from a relationship perspective. I get that Phil has vastly improved himself and shown his improved self to Rita, and her opinion of him has changed, but in this last reality there's no indication that he's told her about what's happened yet, and from her perspective things would be moving blindingly fast. After maybe 18 hours tops (where she's only really interacted with him twice before going back with him to the inn) she decided to give up all the money she has on her, close to $400, on this guy she still barely knows. That's a bit weird but somewhat acceptable. The really weird thing is what happens the following morning after the loop is over. Literally the last line is the bombshell of "Let's live here. We'll rent to start." This is a guy she's known for what, a few weeks maybe, since she was new at the station, and she's only really gotten to know him at all in the past couple of days, and she seems totally fine with the idea of moving with a near stranger to a new town. That is WILD and the movie takes it completely at face value and makes us think it's completely reasonable, but only by romcon logic does it make any sense at all. If they'd left literally just that line out I think the ending would have been way better because every time I see that scene it takes me out of it and makes me think she's crazy for just reacting so nonchalantly after he says it, and makes me wonder what their next conversation is going to be like. Like I get it, Rita, you dream of settling down and having a family, but talk about jumping in headfirst into a relationship.
When you know, you know. People fall in love with only limited interactions all the time. Not saying it is healthy, but it happens. I knew the day my wife moved in across the street from me, after our first interaction, that we would be together forever. Now married 27 years and I still know we’ll be together always.
There's a deleted scene (I don't know if it was actually filmed or just in the script) that shows he got into the time loop because a girlfriend he'd just broken up with put a gypsy curse on him as revenge, and that the curse would only be broken when he learned to really love someone other than himself. The scene was cut when they realized, correctly, that the audience just didn't need to know.
Another great reaction! You are quickly becoming one of my favorite...what's the phrase? Movie Reaction People? Reactors? Whatever it's called, you're awesome!
Saw this one in the theater back in '93 with a friend of mine. General consensus is that Phil spent decades reliving that day, based on the number of skills he had time to master. As for why he didn't leave town, the blizzard, along with having his day reset every time he went to bed, undoubtedly limited his options... which isn't to say he never tried leaving, but we only see small snippets of the many, many years he spent in the time loop. Speaking of time loops, this wasn't the first time one was depicted in a movie, but it did a lot to popularize the idea in the west.
I loved that it wasn't just enough to 'do' the right things...it was to truly BE a decent person, inside and out. When something broken in him was finally fixed...and he was full of joy...he was finally free. Gets me right in the feels every time
Hi sweetheart, love the background progress just show us you..I so enjoy your company like watching my old movies with one of my grandkids..lovelovelove ❤️✌🏻🌸
A gradeschool teacher of mine and her husband used to visit my family every February to see this movie, for like 20 years! Been tougher in recent years, but they did make it to my bro’s bday party this year!
Hey, your reaction was great fun to me! Your finishing thoughts reminded me of a nine minute video from the YT channel Lessons on the Screenplay about Groundhog Day. That could be worth a watch now you've seen it, but one thing that stood out to me is that Phil was so firmly egocentric that he'd literally rather die than change. Somehow that stuck with me. So yeah, it's a comedy, but it's so... versatile, haha.
Loved the reaction, but I have another for you.. A few months ago a guy suggested they promote "Groundhog Day 2". Then when you get to the theater it is just this movie all over again, just as it was. Thanks for the fun and keep up the great work!
You are really a brilliant young lady. Fabulous reaction! Based on the writer/directors input along with those that have calculated with info provided thru out the, it was estimated to be 12,395 days or nearly 34 years!!! It took him that long to be the good, kind hearted person he became, with all the skills he acquired. Thanks for sharing Wimsory.
My birthday is on Groundhog's Day so I've seen this movie a ton of times. It's become one of my yearly traditions for winter/Christmas. Along with movies like Trapped in Paradise. Another Christmas classic.
Doing well, like the new background. This is such a great film. I watch it every February. He was such a horrible person, but grew into such an amazing person. He was in the loop for a couple decades. Can't wait to see what you watch next. -Sage
Bill Murray's a pro at playing jerks who have a change of heart. If you want to see another movie where Bill plays a similar character, watch _Scrooged._ It's one of the better and more unique versions of _A Christmas Carol_ out there.
Great movie. You should also see Edge of Tommrow who has the same Idea but on a more serious note. Fun fact the actor who plays the Mayer is Bill Murray Brother
Holy guacamole! I've seen this film too many times to remember and I just _now_ noticed that the "Wrestlemania!" guy near the end is Michael Shannon! I had to look it up after seeing it.
