Groundhog Day (1993) First Time Watching/Movie Reaction & Commentary - Is Phil In Hell??! 

They should have released "Groundhog Day 2" in Theaters and just shown the original movie. Would be a great promotion for a special Blluray Release or something like that XD

I don't think it was a single moment that "broke the curse." In my opinion, it was all about transforming Phil. He needed to grow into a better person, and it took him quite a while to do so! The lesson you pointed to may have been the _last_ lesson he learned, but it wasn't the _only_ one.

"Sometimes people just die." "Not today." "He hadn't died before?" No, no. Phil is just vowing that on _this_ day, _his_ day, he will make sure no one dies.

The fact that why this happened was never revealed to him but he learned some valuable life lessons is the exact same thing this does for the viewer... it's poetry, it means to you what it means to you. A lot more films used to be like this and I wish more were today.

When you watch a movie like this the best thing to do is to not over think and try is rationalize everything. Just use your imagination, have a few laughs and enjoy the ride.

That day was a lesson on how to live life: make the best possible out of each day - not just for yourself, but include fellow humans as well. Me (and a bunch of other people) consider this to be the best movie ever made. Thanks for the nice reaction, Amanda

She didn't really know Phil, she was just made his producer. Her opinion hadn't been fully formed.

This movie is popular in the Buddhist community as an excellent representation of enlightenment. It is only when Phil abandons attachment to the past and future and accepts life as it is that he can truly begin life. The night the loop ends, he says that whatever happens, he is happy now and that's all that matters.

It's better when the movie doesn't explain the cause. It lets us think up our own explanations. An early draft of the script had something about it being a curse from one of Phil's ex-lovers, and I think we can all agree that something like that would ruin the movie. The universe is a strange and mysterious thing sometimes, and not everything has or needs an explanation.

It’s great that your first reaction is the entire town is conspiring to make him believe he’s reliving the same day. And then HELL. Things escalated fast. Thank you for all these videos, I’ve been enjoying all of them. It was because of you that I finally had the nerve to watch Squid Game and got really hooked on it. Don’t worry about the production values of them, I think a big part of their charm is how natural they feel. To have your cats wandering by or your mom popping in while you watch makes it more like you’re watching it with a friend. If you’re looking for another superb scary movie from close to the 80s, I’d recommend the original Candyman from 1992. From how you’ve reacted to the other horror movies I think you’d enjoy it. It’s very creepy with some really shocking moments.

Amanda! Yes, Punxsutawney is a real town northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The town pictured at the beginning of the movie wasn't just a standard "opening city scene" shot, but it was Pittsburgh. The castle-like glass building the camera held on for a bit is the PPG Center (Pittsburgh Plate Glass), which makes, among other things, the windows for many of the cars made in this country. Know why Phil didn't want to go to Punxsutawney at the beginning of the movie? Because Phil was a hotshot city guy who didn't want to mingle with hicks (rural folks). Remember when you said they should leave, at the end of the movie? Well, no, because Phil was a better person and found the smaller rural town alluring and satisfying; he no longer needed to be a big-city guy! :)

The duration of Phil's real-time entrapment in the time loop has been the subject of much discussion. Ramis once said that he believed the film took place over 10 years. When a blogger estimated the actual length to be approximately nine years, Ramis disputed that estimate and his own. He replied that it takes at least 10 years to become good at an activity (such as Phil learning ice sculpting and to speak French) and "allotting for the down-time and misguided years he spent, it had to be more like 30 or 40 years." A similar estimate suggests that it takes at least 10,000 hours of study (just over a year's worth of time) to become an expert in a field, and given the number of loops seen or mentioned on screen, and how long Phil could spend per day studying, that Phil spent approximately 12,400 days, or nearly 34 years, trapped in the loop. In Rubin's original concept draft, Phil himself estimates that he has been trapped for between 70 and 80 years, having used books to track the passage of time.

Amanda I know this was posted nearly two years ago, but I just watched your reaction to this movie today. I'm glad that you enjoyed watching this movie, and I could see how intrigued you were about all of the twists and turns in the story. Groundhog Day has always been one of my favorite movies, and it is always entertaining no matter how many times I have seen it. The actor with the raspy voice is Brian Doyle Murray, Bill Murray's brother, and they have been in several movies together.

Amanda...Phil didn't learn piano out of his own initiative. He started learning piano because, if you recall, on one of the early days he repeated, he asked her what kind of guy she would like and among several things, she said she would like a guy who plays an instrument.

Hello! This is my birthday movie since I was born on February 2nd, GROUNDHOG DAY! I watch this every year on my birthday, and I've actually BEEN to Punxatawney, PA on my birthday. I can tell you that the morning of, the town becomes a nationwide media curiosity, complete with news choppers and Good Morning America doing live interviews. Lots of fun!

If you didn't catch it, Rita is their new producer. Phil just met her at the beginning of the movie so she wouldn't really know what is out of character for him.

Always interesting to watch reactions to one of my favourite movies. Amanda, you were great. Asking the obvious question, why? Having seen this movie SO many times, about 25 or so, the why doesn't matter in a literal sense. It helps to understand this was written by a Buddhist and each day represents a lifetime. Some people have tried to calculate how many Groundhog days he actually went through but, in the original script, it was meant to be 10,000 - that is, 10,000 lifetimes. It is meant to be symbolic of changing karma or changing yourself or else you are doomed to repeat your suffering over and over again. You are right when you say that the moment it changed was when he said he was happy now no matter what happens tomorrow (because I love you was added by the studio). Being happy now in this moment represents Buddhist enlightenment that one was thought to have to live 10,000 lifetimes to reach. But this movie is demonstrating it is simply about learning through living what you need to change to be a happier person and gain respect from others. The main change (which is consistent with Buddhism) was when he started to devote himself to helping other people - not to sacrifice himself for others or to be just self-centred but, to fully respect himself and fully respect others and to arrive at a state of life where he is happy in himself right now. The whole message of this movie and the fact it is so entertaining is amazing. It deals with some of the profound and basic issues of life - suffering and reactions to it (depression, hedonism, romantic love, suicidal thoughts and finally realising one can change for the better through one's own responsibility) - only lasts an hour and a half, is funny, entertaining, clever, packed with so much incident, twists and turns - everything you would want in a movie and everything you would want to know about life really.

Groundhog is "marmota", pretty much very similar to a beaver in many ways. Funny thing about the translation of this title in Spain in that, at the end, many people use the original title of the movie, Groundhod´s day (el día de la marmota), as an coloquial expression when you are doing the same thing over and over or something repetitive or even to refer the movie itself.

Any explanation for why it happened would just make the movie worse, I think. It's not about that and it really doesn't matter why it happened. Phil is a condescending asshole, but he's not really any worse than your average person. He's not a murderer or something. But he still goes through however many thousands of days of selfishness, pettiness, cruelty, bitterness, resentment, anger and eventually suicidal depression and rage before he does what seems to finally set him free - learn. On the other hand, he DOES learn and grow.. eventually. It's kind of a perfect movie; lots of depth and meaning, a pretty serious examination of what it means to be human and what it means to be a good person, but wrapped up in an endlessly watchable, fun, funny, quotable movie. I like it a lot.

The Spanish title may have given the movie away, but this movie changed the meaning of _Groundhog Day_ from a seasonal celebration (it's literally the middle of winter) to the loop plot twist it is today.

When I saw this at the theater, I liked how the subject just went full circle. From panic, to annoyance, to mischievousness, to anger, to depression and wanting to end it all, then after realizing you can't end it all, to just decide to make the best of it.

I Love that the title in Spanish spoiled it, yet when it happened, Amanda was still confused at first. Not a complaint, as that is being immersed in the story as it goes, and makes it more enjoyable.

What you may have thought was him making peace with it was him enjoying the novelty of doing whatever he wanted without consequences. As the novelty wore off, that's when he he was finally going crazy and looking for ways to kill himself. When he finally decided to use his time well to learn new things and help others, that's when it finally ends. The director, Harold Ramis (who incidentally played a cameo role as the medical doctor) once said he received letters from Buddhist, Christians, and philosophers who all projected their beliefs onto the film. The Buddhist saw it as a lesson in samsara and Phil only ended the cycle of being stuck when he became a better person. I imagine Catholics saw Phil being stuck in Purgatory. I love this film.

This film is a romance comedy, however the 2nd layer is a story of redemption similar to "A Christmas Carol". He becomes a good person and deserving of her love. When she does love him, the cycle breaks.

Between this movie and Scrooged, Bill Murray is the master of going from nasty to nice in a movie. It's even there (a bit) in Ghostbusters.

Good review. And yes, the music is great, really tops off the film and makes it even better. This is probably my favourite film of all time, and I've seen it lots of times. I enjoy it so much, I re-watch it every February 2nd. If you watch the extra commentary on the extended DVD, the late, great Harold Ramis says that Phil was probably stuck in that same day for many, many years, although as with much of this film (like why it happened in the first place), it's left to the imagination of the viewer. Phil goes from scared to self-indulgent to manipulative to depressed, but it was only when he learned to stop being self-focused and genuinely started to care for Rita and improve himself for the benefit of others (as you said, "humbling himself" and changing into a better person) that he was released from the 'captivity' of groundhog day.

In switzerland we burn a snowman filled with explosives on a stake while having people on horses with torches runaround it and count how long it takes until the head explodes which has the most explosives. If it takes less than ~15 minutes then its gonna be a good summer. We call it Böögg which can also be used to describe buggers.

This movie is a comedy so why does everyone think the day will suddenly stop repeating when he tries to kill himself? That wouldn't be funny-would it? I never thought for a second this wouldn't have a happy ending. I laughed my ass off during his suicide attempts because it is a COMEDY. Lighten up people! Also, why wouldn't he want to live in Punxsutawney after getting to know the WHOLE town? Everyone loves him there. He is a hero.

He was stuck there for at least 30 years but likely longer. The director said it took 10 years to master 1 thing and he mastered piano, ice sculpting, and chiropractics. On top of that he knew everyone. So, it was at least 30 years but more likely 40-50 years and some estimates over 100 years. On a side note, the original script was written with an ex having this curse put on him.

Nearly 30 years later and it is still the best "Time-Loop" movie. Also technically the first Film to feature this type of Time-Loop (uncontrolled). There was a Japanese film in 1983 (The Girl Who Leapt Thru Time), but she could control when an d how for she went back.

My favorite movie since early 90s. But when I was a kid just watch this film as a pure comedy. And when grew up I got philosophy of that

the filmmakers said there was no explanation on the trap, and they didn't want to provide any details as to how/why this was happening. they also are not specific about how long he's repeating, but some believe he was trapped in the same day for many years. he had to master ice sculpting, french, and playing the piano, not to mention card throwing. the point is that he has to change his ways to get out of it. he starts completely selfish and ends almost selfless. his ability to find happiness helping others breaks the curse, and when he kisses her and says he is totally happy at that moment, and she says she is also, it snows. this is the first new natural act in the repeating day, signalling that he is no longer repeating. note that he tries to save the old man, an act of charity, but it's still selfish in that he's doing it for himself, to see if he can save the stranger with his god-like powers. when he realizes he can't save a single person in a single day, that he does not control other's mortality, he decides to just help everyone along the way and that is the key to becoming a better person, which breaks the curse.

Fun Fact: the original script for this movie stated that he keeps reliving the same day over and over again because an ex girlfriend he screwed over decided to practice witchcraft and cursed him. The script also states that he is trapped in this loop for over 1000 years.

Atrapado en el Tiempo se convirtió en un clásico moderno prácticamente desde su estreno. Es una película con mucho corazón, entrañable. A pesar de que en España se titula Atrapado en el Tiempo mucha gente la recuerda como "El Día de la Marmota", es decir, que habría sido mejor limitarse a traducir el título. Hay un canal de televisión, creo que americano, que en el día de la marmota (es algo que se celebra realmente) de no sé que año se limitó a emitir la película durante todo el día, terminaba y volvía a empezar.

A groundhog is a furry, beaver sized rodent that lives in North America. They hibernate in tunnels beneath the ground during winter. They begin to emerge from their tunnels after the weather warms from between February to late March. There is an old native American tale that says if the groundhog emerges and sees his shadow, then he will crawl back into his tunnel and this will mean six more weeks of cold weather. But if the groundhog doesn't see his shadow, then winter has finally passed. It's a silly tale we tell our children. Groundhog Day is supposed to be the day that the groundhog first emerges.

Punxsutawney is a town 2 hours from me. Ground Hog Day is not a national holiday but more so a superstition about if the Ground Hog sees its own shadow, then it's assumed to be a longer winter lmao.

When “50 first dates” first came out a lot of people loved it (as they do most adam sandler movies, theyre just likable in general, lol), but eventually ppl were like “wait, its kind of a rip off of that groundhogs day movie from 15 years ago” ....groundhogs day is just a straight up classic...anyway, bc ive been watching so many reations to it i got in my suggested videos a “youtube short” that said in the original screenplay he was supposed to relive the same day for 10,000 years, but when they made it they just tried to convey 30, or 40 years, or at least thats what they had in mind...yeah, i think u pretty much got it right, the point was just about love & growing & being a better person & being in the present, but yeah, movies with open interpretations are cool now that i think about it, a lot of great art is like that, some musicians & painters refused to explain the meaning sometimes (like picasso) & said/say it was up to the viewer (or audience)...anyway, awesome reaction:D

27:30 Thanks for the warnings, things like that are sometimes difficult to watch, especially if you almost, or did lose a family member from such a thing. Okay P.S. Here is my theory, the reason he has to go through the entire day over and over again, is... Like "Lier, Lier", she made a wish that he's become the perfect man for her, it just takes him a while... A few thousand years to get there that's all. When he fulfills all the list of requirements like playing an instrument, and such he finally unlucks the perfect boyfriend wish she made, and he manages to escape. If they added one scene with her saying her wish the entire movie would be explained. But that's just a theory. I also have a long, 1 hour and 32-minute video theory on the movie Clue, and like puzzles, which probably helps in trying to solve these types of mysteries.

One of the creators in an early interview said that Phil was in the time loop for 10,000 years to achieve enlightenment per Buddhist philosophy to be released from the loop. Another theory is that Ned the Life Insurance Salesman is the Devil ("I as sure as heckfire (Hellfire) remember you, ... watch that first step (down to hell), it is a doozy" his red feather (horn) in his hat), and that only on the day that Phil bought the contract (sold his soul) he was released from the loop. My money is on Ned the Devil rather than enlightenment.

Groundhog day is an extension of Candlemas. The superstition related to shadows and flame was anthropomorphized into the groundhog's prediction. Groundhog day is one of 2 holidays I celebrate (new year's being the other). Both of them celebrate rejuvenation and hope for the coming year.

41:42 - I haven't seen this movie in a while and it means something different to me than it did when it first came out. At this point I think of this story as being the 'death' of the old Phil, and his decades or possibly even centuries spent in purgatory. At the end, he leaves purgatory and starts his heavenly existence. He's learned to value people, to love others, and to love himself. It makes sense to me that Phil wants Rita to make a life with him in the town - it's the place where he has made all these wonderful connections. He knows the people (he's been completely disconnected from people in his previous life).

Great Movie. . Fun fact the mayor of the town is Bill Murray real brother. Also there was suppose to be a scene that there was a witch who cursed Phil but they decided not to put it in and leave it open. Another movie with same time loop story but more serious and sci fi is The Edge of Tomorrow 2014 with Tom Cruise. Another great Bill Murray sarcastic comedy movie is MeatBalls or the Ghostbusters movies.

I have attended Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney on 4 occasions. It is a lot of fun. If you ever have the opportunity I highly suggest attending in person.
