I love talking and I don't try to be repetitive or dull at all. Don't judge everyone with this disability just because you saw the ones who can't function as well as the others in one video.
It's funny how our instinct is to feel bad for these people, but they appear to have more of a love and appreciation for life than a lot of people without autism. They seem genuinely happy.

Eric M Don't worry. There are people who are exactly like that and have intelligence. I should know because I fall into that group. It's called Aspergers. I am not a perfect example due to how intelligent I am (Sometimes I contest my intellect) but it becomes evident. Even with that however it can still have its downside. We definitely are different, but we still have the same problems as you, maybe slightly different. If you teach a kid like me to talk, we never shut up, but regardless it's important to teach them. Communication is an extremely important thing we need to learn.
I too have an intellectual disability. I don't let it consume me. I live a normal life. Just because we have an intellectual disability it doesn't mean that we are not normal. I cook, clean,work, get up and dressed and do all of the daily task that these so called normal people do. To me there are more people with intellectual disabilities who are in the workforce then those who are intellectually disabled
My husband was able to put my severely schizophrenic sister in law in a group home and she is doing phenomenally better than she was in the state mental hospital.
Long term hospitalization has been proven from time to time to hurt some people. Supportive housing is needed and unfortunately in a lot of states this is unheard of. The time to advocate for this type of housing is now.

I'd love to live in a group home with folks like me, I'd want to make friends with everybody who moved in and I'm sure I would too; I don't think I'll ever be able to live on my own as an adult as I'm too low-functioning, I hope someday these will become more widespread to give more Autistic folks chances!! Either way, no, not all of us are like these people, it just so happens some unforunately have got an autism diagnosis that might be worse than others, and honestly even the ones in the video are living their lives the same way an average human would (this isn't to say every person with autism is able to do so, some really can't and it's sad to see.) just with a bit more control and a slightly different type of support (since mental illness' in general affect different people in different ways, again, in all do respect to said people.) because they respectfully need said support and comfort.
I agree. Being praised for doing everything the average person does feels like there's little expected of us or we deserve to be pitied. I'd feel like a young child who just learned to dress themselves or use the toilet. That's definitely not the case with adults with disabilities. Doing the typical everyday things like driving a car, owning a home, or having a job is part of life as an adult and it just feels like my abilities were useless when Im praised for that shit. People become to easily impressed and it just feels weird.

We have a home like this nextdoor to us ☺️they are the most friendly neighbors on the block. I also have a cousin living in a home like this on Long Island. She’s been there 25+ years. Best thing that ever happened to her. It makes me really sad when parents of disabled children say “I could never put my child in a home” because there are so many fantastic places out there. You can’t take care of your child forever. What happens when you die? Set them up for success while you’re still around to make good decisions with them.
Im from long island too im from commack and i actually have a group home 4 doors down from me ran by AHRC suffolk along with the daycare bldg in bohemia by macarthur airport and i would actually visit the day program in bohemia once a year to see some of my classmates there it was good times indeed
I’m sure they are, but importantly as well their level of output will always be different to what say you or I can produce in an hr for the same job. Hence It is expected that they will be paid equal in terms of output level rather than hourly basis otherwise it is not fair on any business. Also the main aim of this is for them to have a purpose and feel part of society rather than monetary in nature.
I'm sure they get paid equal until the housing takes 90% of their check. I had a friend living I one of those he got hit in the head as a kid. He said he hated it and they took all his money. This one looks genuine but who knows. Just like old people, they're always scammers out there

I know how you feel. I have an autistic two year old. We are older parents (45) and I just want him to be able to take care of himself one day. Although this group home seems to be nice not all are and not every autistic child/adult will have the luxury of one. Some may be institutionalized. I cry about this often.
I'm with you. I have Autism Spectrum Disorders/Asperger Syndrome and would hate to live in a group home like this as well. I'd hate to have to be around people all the time, especially paid staff who you probably have to be with both at home and out in the community. Plus, I'd feel overcrowded just to be with only one other resident whom I didn't already know. Just like you, I'm also against group homes.
I have aspergers and I spent my childhood in a group home. I can tell you from experience that the media is not showing the other side of a group home like this. The group home i was in had drug addicted staff come in and abuse the clients, both physically and verbally, the house was always smelling of cigarettes because all the staff smoked inside and outside, and me and the other clients had to sleep on the floor because all the beds had bedbugs. The food we ate (on days we could eat) would make us sick because it was always expired, and the group home did not have enough funding to do weekly grocery shopping for the clients, which is why sometimes we couldn't even eat. I wish group homes would be permanently closed down in all parts of the world, because they do nothing but abuse autistic people

Growing up with autism wasn't easy. I can say now that everything seems to be working out for me as an adult. With more support, I now live in my own apartment and I plan on becoming an IT Specialist. These folks are proof that anyone can live a fulfilling life!
Well since you are autistic, let me ask.... How come a lot of autistic people have angry outbursts and have a hard time controlling their anger? My sister is autistic and she is just like this... She acts and appears normal at first but God forbid if I do anything to upset her even though most times it is unintentional, she will scream and yell at me at the top of her lungs for 1-3 hours and insult me and call me names. And sometimes attacks, punches, and assaults me when I am clearly not even a threat to her or I make it very clear to her that I don't want to fight her. We are both grown adults in our late 20s also...so it's not like she is a young child.
@@miraculouslady632 Autism has its share of unresolved behavioral issues. Trust me I know because I was like your sister when I was younger. I felt like no one understood me as an individual, and I reacted violently as a result. My self-esteem took a dive as well, which resulted in having little to no friends. Ever since then, I was involved in numerous therapy sessions that dealt with my unresolved behavioral issues, and understanding what it meant to be someone on the spectrum. I think understanding and persistence are critical parts to help someone with autism. My advice to you: try to understand her needs and learn about what she has to go through everyday. Also, if possible, convince yourself that these behavioral issues don't go away unless she feels understood or at least appreciated. I never said this will be easy, so it may depend on how severe her behavior is.
I have Autism Spectrum Disorder, but to be honest I am glad that I don’t live in there. I moved out on my own with roommates. However this group home seems to be great and I am glad that they get to work and become independent adults. This man is so humble and it is great to see!

Of course he can stay with me forever because I love him so much! But once I die I won't be around to care for him! I'm so glad to have seen this video!! It makes me cry and happy at the same time! I’m recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder myself, am currently a Pre-School teacher where I work with children who also have ASD. God truly works in mysterious ways 😊.
Any adult with a disability should have the opportunity to work and live like these young men. There's so many of us who are lonely, struggle to find a purpose and feel so isolated. But there's so few resources for us as a whole.
You don’t have to go through life alone, it’s not meant like that. We need each other to survive and thrive, and that goes for everyone. I’m glad these wonderful people are not going through their struggles alone and they are happy in the process.
As a person with autism this legitimately pisses me off. You can grow out of some of the more severe sides of autism with self-training. At 18, I got out of my inhibitions regarding many social interactions. Eventually, said interactions cascaded until eventually... I'm just a normal weird person. With time I figure I may get better, but I don't think I could of if I was in this kind of home. Restraints give the ability for ingenious creativity, but without the knowledge of those restraints they become shackles that enslave your future. This angers & saddens me immensely. They are coddled, assigned schedules... they are treated as children unaware they can grow up. So they remain this way.
I'm an aspie and no one would be able to tell. I grew out of most of my quirks and learned the hard way that you need to be your own advocate else you will be lumped in with people completely different from you. Understanding why emotions are the way they are and learning that EVERYONE has something off about them will help most of the people that have this disorder but of course it depends. You can easily tell some people are poor in one category by perception adjustment
Same here, when you’re in youth clubs made for people like yourself you often at times dont find good connections with major autistic people if your more likely to grow out of your problems. Placed like these however are needed for those who need 24/7 help and thats ok. Love from Ireland
The spectrum of autism has different levels, some people requires more needs and full support by these special homes than others. The most important is that they are happy and living it comfortable.

I did in internship at a place like this right by where I live so I was there when I was 16 just doing things like laundry and dishes and stuff it had 10 people there some had more than just autism but I can say it was 100x better than I thought it would be it really has good family vibes they put a smile on my face everyday
I'm a mildly autistic guy who experienced living in a group home in somerset Kentucky for five years since I was 20 years old and I moved out two years ago. Now I'm 27. I hate group homes but I was there because of a bad incident between me and my father. I don't want to say what I did or argued with him about, but I spent a night in jail and learned a very good lesson. My father chose to not press charges on me. He forgave me that day and I have a better relationship with him now. We cared about each other since I was born in 1995. But I live with an FHP a family home provider. I like him because he and my therapist and my whole support team are teaching me what you're expected to do as an adult better than my parents could. I still love my mom and dad. But they didn't have the right tools or skills to raise me and my sister right. My sister is a year younger than me and I love her too. She is not autistic. I am so smart and high functioning that I take care of myself. I pay my rent and bills. I buy my own things. I like where I am at and where I'm going better than where I was seven years ago. I wanted to cry going to jail, but I took it like a man. My record is dismissed and has been since I was 23. I'm not a criminal, but I did commit a crime on my dad. I learned my lesson. He still forgives me and loves me. I never want to commit a crime again. I'm not a bad guy just had bad luck. I'm glad not to be in the group home anymore. I've learned anger management and money management skills. I have better friends than I did in school. Now I know how serious breaking the law is. My father also has jail experience and my grandfather. Group homes are no place for me. Some people see nothing wrong with me. Neither do I. I do suffer from anger and depression but not all the time. I'm a little slow learning certain things. And I have a slight speech impediment. But people understand what I say. I'm not insane or evil. Just did one crime. My advice to people who break the law is don't do it. My advice to people who are afraid of disabled people is don't be. All of us are disabled in some way. My father taught me that. Don't ever be judgmental to disabled people. Get to know them before you decide if you like them or not. For the most part, I take decently good care of myself. Never be afraid of disabled people. Period.

I am 24 and have high functioning autism and would love to share my story with you, growing up on long island times have been very tough on me moved 2 times to lindenhurst and lastly commack on long island lindenhurst i was bought up by both working class parents my dad was an event planner and handyman plus my mom was a hairstylist and teaching assistant now happily retired as of 2023 and life was really bad i was bought up in a small 2 bd 2ba home built in 1958 and when i was in school i was bullied for my autism and kicked plus neglected by staff no fucks given and when my dad sued the school and won we left for commack and that is where things gotten better for me i graduated high school in 2017 with a NYS regents diploma and 2 special ed certifications i was the first autistic student in the district to earn such diploma and to this day im still the only one with it, and believe it or not when i heard about you getting in trouble and such i understand the frustration you had so i was in the 3rd grade intermediate school and elementary school in lindenhurst i got in big trouble for brawling and other shit i didnt do cuz i was non verbal until we moved to commack anyways long story short my elementary school principal in lindenhurst warned my parents and i if i lashed out again they would NOT suspend me since i would get suspended for my autism a lot but automatically send me into either pilgrim psychiatric center or a troubled kiddie home in the area which angered my dad and started suing the school so it was crazy times then and now sometimes and 3rd grade i had trauma that i fought some kids and an adult so after that incident and lindenhurst i was treated respectfully and like family until high school so anyways fast forward im now living independently in trinity Florida at a beautiful condo home bear my grandparents and i am seasonally with my parents during the summer as we snowbird now so wintertime im in florida and summer im back on long island, im currently at hillsborough community college studying broadcasting and journalism plus radio DJing following in my dads footsteps so my goal is to be a professional emcee for the lightning hockey team or rays and still do sports broadcasting plus radio to keep me busy. I also heard you fought with your dad a lot and i was the same way my dad was a hardass verbally abusive and goofy bastard and there was this one incident where it got so bad so one day on a very cold day in october 2021 my dad and i were fighting over his bedroom tv being broken and his computer frequently having viruses and slow cuz he never updates it but me and we have cablevision which is shitty service so long story short we were getting 4k tv and internet service upgrades and he blamed me for his slow pc and tv and it got so bad that i ran away at exactly 1:00pm to get psychiatric help at pilgrim state and sure enough i arrived after walking for 3 hours from my home to find it was closed and i of course was going to try and visit my police station to report my father but it was too late and my mother came home from work at 4 and heard from my father i was missing so she called 911 right away to report me missing and ran away so as i was walking to my station a friendly cop named nick who was in charge of missing or raped people caught and found me at 7:00pm we were talking and an hour later at 8 he drove me home after a long search they had 3 k9 units at my house sniffing me down but wasnt there anyways my uncles local friends plus neighbors were at my house and everyone i knew even my own sister ran outside our house crying and frantic and nick said that if i did this again and 911 was called he wont help me again and ill be arrested and put in jail for running away and verbal assault. I traumatized everyone that day but needless to say my dad is calmer with me and vowed to never lose his shit or blow up on me again. So were on good terms now and we let bygones be bygones after that , i hope to hear from u soon and know this was very emotional for me reading your story. Regards Drew
Why do reporters make such stupid comments like working gives austistic people purpose as though we are like fish in a bowl...a spectacle! Why ask questions about basic human needs (is my point)? Yes, the neurological pathways may operate differently but when statements and questions such as these are posed it makes me really wonder what brain pathway the reporter is operating on- it is akin to asking dumb questions like: "when you are hungry do you need to eat and do you enjoy when food tastes good?"
As an autistic woman, I know and experienced all too well what you are talking about. I feel that they put us in a corner while at the same time making a spectacle and treating us like children. From experience not saying all autistics are like that, but like Transformers we are more than meets the eye. I've met a man in his mid forties who doesn't say much and appears to many as having the mental age of a child, but he types essays so lyrically and plays any hit song on piano you can think of. The other night at my neighboring group home where he lives, he played "November Rain" for me (my favorite song!). Anyway, getting back to topic, it truly rubs me off the wrong way when people think we're useless, or that we need a "cure" when in reality, there is nothing wrong with us because we are only human and our brains are only wired differently. To close this, I'll use my favorite autism quote: It's not a processing error, it's just a different operating system.

Autism does need to be cured. It does hurt people, and it does ruin some people's lives. People who are high on the autism spectrum live horrible, miserable lives. They were saying it more as how autistic people have a hard time finding jobs, and people (autistic or not) need jobs to feel a sense of purpose in life, so you aren't just rotting day by day doing the same things. Some of our most famous scientists and engineers ever were autistic. But autistic people don't have to be scientists or engineers. I am an autistic woman, and I want to become a toy designer (specifically dolls). A lot is expected of us, but we are also infantalised and told we should die (like you did). My cousin lived in a group home for almost 15 years before passing away 2 months ago. He loved his home and things like this are great for these people. God protect all of them.

People with autism tend to have good lives in the future. Some will get married and have kids and some just like living alone or living with some roommates. There is nothing wrong being on the spectrum. There are people do good and some that have mental issues later on in life because of the use of illegal drugs and alcoholism. Unlike the drug addicts and alcoholics that ended up in group homes before turning 30 and they arent autistic.
To those of you who have a heart. Please, for the sake of our world, don’t feel bad or show us your compassion. It makes some of us feel like lesser or sub-human and the respectful thing (in my opinion) is to just treat us and consort with us like you would with any other human being, wether it’s small talk or a conversation that can last hours yet maintaining an atmosphere of comfort and some even ground between you and i on a regular day. We only wish to talk and get to know you and your interests because yes, we get incredibly lonely sometimes and we hate it, *i* hate it. Should you intentionally feel closed off and refuse a conversation, that’s totally fine and we will respect that. “Working” gives many people who are not diagnosed a sense of “purpose”. They may dislike it, but it’s what helps them get by. We experience the same struggles with life just as you do. We eat the same food, listen to the same music, wear the same clothing, go to the same beach and work the same job. i believe there’s a group home like this near where my mother used to live! having two siblings with asd, it makes me so happy to see that people are getting that push they need and are getting to be surrounded by others like them.
Not only is this wholesome, but it's smart. Having like minded people together always makes for a better life, but it specifically helps with their autism by learning how to live responsibly with others going through the same thing.
In the end I still feel bad for people with intellectual disability. People always sugarcoat intellectual disability, learning disorders, autism and other special needs conditions, but when it comes down to it - these people were dealt a very bad hand, and they will never be given a chance to communicate with people and engage with society and experience reason and thoughts and autonomy the way the rest of us do. They're not less happy because of it since they haven't known any different, but still, they're deprived of the opportunities the rest of us have, and that's unfortunate.

bro im schizophrenic and it's worse to not be able to engage in society, to never have had friends or a significant other, but be able to see what you're missing out on. That guy said he's happy. He has a happy little life in that home he's been living in for 30 years, why feel bad? I'm just saying it's not so bad. then maybe people who do not have autism or special needs in general could learn to communicate with those who were dealt "a very bad hand" as you put it..there are more ways than one to communicate and you learn that very quickly when working in the disability sector.i'm suprised,since you feel so bad for these people,being superior in communicative language and thought processes,that you would know that.do some research and open your mind.
Actually a lot of ppl with Autism. If getting diagnosed early and receiving services early live out life like what we would call “normal people”. Yes there are ppl who are severely on the spectrum who have to go in group homes and institutions.
These are the types of news stories we need more of to help spread awareness, not BS fear mongering. Good for all these people and I wish them the best in the future!
I worked in a place like this for a few years, and despite some men presenting very challenging behaviours, I adored each one of them and got to watch them become more independent, and proud of themselves. Giving someone choice and purpose makes such a difference, especially with an extra teaspoon of love 🤩

Because people draw value from being a productive member of society. For folks like this it can be a struggle for them to find purpose on life so getting them into jobs gives them a sense of purpose and a sense of providing value to the community.
I have Asperger's Syndrome. I was diagnosed when I was 5 and I went through TONS of speech therapy in grade school to learn how to be social. I also studied interactions and used that to help me make friends. It's the end of 8th grade for me in my middle school and I'm a completely different person now. I've never been so social in my life and it just feels so good to communicate. My school tried to put me in Special Ed and their afterschool activity for kids with special needs but my parents fought back and let me have a normal education. I only learned to be social because I was around people who were normal enough for me to study how they acted. Those kids in Special Ed will never get anywhere because they don't have any real life examples. It just pains me to see that parents would just give up on their children like this though. These social homes look like absolute shit. All these parents who complain about not having the perfect child because they have autism or the parents who think their autistic child is a burden are just horrible to just leave their children in these hell houses to rot. I'm happy that I can live a normal life and move on to high school. If you're a parent hearing this and you have an autistic child never give up on them. You might underestimate them in the end.

My wife is a BHP AND MRMA. She works in houses that house two residents in each house. She has one resident non verbal severe autism. I yell you all something you don't know unless you work with folks with disabilities. It is a very hard tiring job. Not every one can do it. Takes real special hearted people to work with mentally challenged folks. But at same time it is a very rewarding job that has great meaning. If you want a meaningful job and have great heart this is for you.
I have a mild form of auspbergers and am a student at University of Southern California. You would be surprised to know how many students here have it. People assume that autism means your low intelligence but that's not always true.

Same, also at a top Uni in Canada. Academia is perfect for autists, if anything it is an exerted effort at emulating the fixative study styles. The savant and specialised abilities of Autists underscores the flawed neurotypical conception of intelligence.
@@joeyGalileoHotto one of the reasons for that is because people with autism are always treated one of two ways by neurotypicals in college and in the workforce: they either treat us like we’re some dorks in gym class, or act like kids in a pet shop looking at a puppy when they’re around us. Many autistic people don’t want to put up with their bs, so they reject services that can place what they believe to be an unwanted social stigma on them
I live in new jersey and tried very hard to get into one of these houses as a young adult. They are housed fifty people like an apartment building with roommates in small rooms. I was told I didn't need it, even though i was homeless with cptsd. Very nice....

Now _these_ are the people in society who are truly marginalized and the gov't must protect them at all costs. This is what real inequality looks like. This is also a precious reminder not to waste your life. Thank you Lord Jesus that there are homes like these out there.
