Thank you, Marissa! I'm glad the timing worked out. Sometimes it's hard to time the videos for everyone since we have to wait until late May to plant warm-season crops. Have a great garden season!

Interesting about seed development. A cup & saucer vine instructions said to have the seed upright and just above the soil. Never seen instructions like that before, but it worked. Seeds can be so fickle. I had calendula that had only 4 pop up and then I set the pot outside. I didn’t pay much attention and about a month later a dozen more popped up 😅. Have no idea what went on but that was a long time. We planted corn and 2 rows, but 3 seeds per hole. I think they should pollinate just fine. I remember as a kid that’s how we planted corn. The section near to this row should have been tilled and then the block could have been planted, but we must have been too busy at the time. Lol, it’s tilled now and a second planting is coming up. It’s dreary rainy day so I’m watching vids. I see you had cold weather. At least your brassicas should love it. I had state fair Bok Choy and a 7+ lb Napa Cabbage!!🎉🎉 and then the heat came and instantly the Bok Choy wanted to bolt. There really isn’t enough time to succession crop some vegetables in our area and I started these under low tunnel mid April. It’s been a sauna in Z5a, WI and mosquitoes! Thankfully the drought broke but now other problems arise. This weather has brought about rust on hollyhocks which I never remembered having before as a friend just brought this problem up that she has in NJ. I ripped up most of the poppies as they were way too thick to let air in and cut off all rust leaves. I think it’s time to talk about fungus problems for many of us finally getting rain and the hot/humid days and nights. Thanks Susan! Always enjoy your channel.

I’ve never tried growing corn in my raised beds. The last time I grew it we had a terrible storm and the corn was laying flat. I quit trying to grown it then. You are tempting me to try again.

Hi Susan, thanks for this video, very helpful. Wondering what the watering needs are? I see you have drip set up, what’s your watering schedule like?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 месяца назад
Hi there. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Corn needs regular watering, with the goal of having the soil stay lightly moist. I believe our drip system runs 15 minutes every morning and when it starts getting hot, we'll also run it in the late afternoon for 10 minutes.

Hello Susan, thank you for your tips! Please could you tell me if there is any insects or pests that we need to be aware when plant corn and how to manage it? I am in Michigan zone 6
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 месяца назад
Hello, Renata. The only insect that we've ever encountered is the corn earworm (and only 1 or 2 years in all the years we've been growing corn). I had debated about adding this to the video since I was concerned the video was awfully long already! The adult form is a moth that lays eggs on the corn silks. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is to apply a few drops of vegetable oil to the young corn silks (right at the entrance to the ear), which will smother both the eggs and any young larvae. The good news is that the corn earworms don't overwinter in colder climates like yours and mine, but the moths can migrate north.

Excellent tutorial. Very thorough. Thank you Susan! I wonder if the Florida weave would help support the corn from wind effects.

Hi, Mark. Well, I had to look that up! But yes, that should be very useful in windy areas. Take care.

Hi Susan from Newfoundland, Canada. I thoroughly enjoyed your video but I have a question. I always thought u would start seeds off in the dark under a heat mat and then after germination u then would place them under grow lights. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden Месяц назад
It's nice to meet you. You can certainly do that but I find the seeds germinate so quickly, it's easier to just have them under the lights right away. I haven't found it necessary to use a heat mat for corn; we primarily use it for starting peppers, eggplants and tomatoes. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

How many cobs does each plant produce? Only one? And how do you harvest them? Thanks, Susan!
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 месяца назад
Hi, Sandra. We usually get 2 ears of corn per plant. To harvest them, hold onto the stalk and gently pull the ear downward while twisting it off.

ah, the seed isn't going to move itself. in my experience I learned why corn fields In Iowa have no trees! Had fun trying!

Like I said, I didn't come up with this and was passing it along for the folks who (like myself) need to start their corn indoors first due to critter issues.

I bought it from Lee Valley Tools many years ago. It doesn't look like they carry them anymore but I do see that Amazon and Territorial Seed have some.
