The Straight Arm Pulldown is one of the BEST ways to engage your lats and really feel the muscles needed to grow your back. Danny shows you the best way to actually do the straight arm pulldown correctly.

Set Up
Have it at the highest setting
For people under 5’5” you can drop it a little lower
Attachment can be ropes or straight bar
Wide clavicle straight bar, narrower rope
Grab the grip with thumbs pointed up
Step back and put weight in heels
Pull the handles toward your back pockets
Use your lats to move the weight
Pull through pinkies
Let your lats catch at the bottom and let the weight back up with your lats up top
Straight bar
Keep open grip
Pull back towards pockets still
The Straight Arm Pulldown is great at the beginning of a back workout to help connect with your lats. Try this out at the beginning of your workout with 3 sets of 12-20 reps to start to feel your lats. Feel free though to insert the exercise anywhere that you can in your workout.

This is one of my favourite back exercises. I always do this at the very beginning to fire up the lats.

Very underrated exercise. I especially like it with higher reps for warming up to bench, press, rows etc.

I've always stuck clear of this exercise no matter the variation Because no matter how hard I tried I wasn't getting the feeling I was remotely using my last and just couldn't get it right. FINALLY after this video with the rope variation I've got it! The skiing analogy really helped. Thanks so much mate!!

I’ve been performing these as a single arm exercise since some progress photos show a slightly more developed left lat, and I’m noticing my strength on right improving. Lefty problems

When i do this exercise the weights are always hitting the top of the machine, i think its because im a tall guy, what can i do to prevent this from happing?

SQUAAAAAAD was just listening to the podcast with Brenkus! Tomorrow’s a pull day, but my shoulder is hyperflexible, so it dislocates everytime I try this.. Any suggestions apart from not doing this exercise? I focus on the lat pulldown atm, because with that movement my shoulder stays where it should be. :)

DaBrute this is a common issue for many. Try regressing by dropping weight.

Google Akmal yes exactly have to bend your elbow and your palms should be facing down at the bottom of the movement also try a wider grip. Slightly wider than shoulder width

You probably don't have any mind muscle connection with your lats. If you feel your lats you can pull directly with your lats on this exercise. As if you do the move by closing your armpit rather than moving the bar up and down

I think my shoulders are so under develop that my shoulders burn out before I can even feel it in my lats. Is that possible or do you think the problem would be my form?

Try incorporating some deadhangs, and do rotator cuff worm-ups with dumbbells or cables. i love to do what they call 'landmine twists' with a 7 ft bar and extension.

I never liked the rope with this because there's not as much stretch and because I would feel it more in my triceps. I feel like with the straight bar, the triceps can't contribute all that much, even if you tried to.

In my gym the does not go over my head. The top of the rope sits at face level. The bottom of the rope sits at my nipples. I try to bend my knees but the exercise does not feel right

Are you hinging forward at the hips? As you're pulling down, really think about how engaged your lats are.
