I will transplant my sprouting Coconut into a container and use a few 'tricks' to make the coconut's transition from ziplock bag to soil as suttle as possible to reduce shock to the plant. @@TheKiwiGrower Hey, how tall did that coconut get? Is it still alive? Oh, and a big myth is that coconuts require sandy soil. They respond very well to rich soil.

Thanks so much for the easy, step by step explanation on how to grow a coconut. I've had germination and leaf growth prior to transplantation, and now she's growing in the front yard. I had her in the back and still in the pot when she developed brown spot. That's when I took her out of the pot, with a nice root growing as well, and put her right in the front yard which is pretty roomier. She looks pretty good so far. And now I've picked my next coconut to germinate and flourish! Thanks!

From what I've seen in a discussion in a palm-forum about growing palms from dehusked coconuts, the nut that cracks is most likely lost. This usually happens when the nut is put into the sun: one side heats, the nut expands unevenly, and then it cracks (the husk usually prevents this). I actually had mine crack when I merely put it 1 m in front of the fireplace, so I'm going to try again shortly using Kiwigrower's tips :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Once was at the Chinese grocery store and saw a coconut that had coconut with a sprouting root so I purchased it. I was surprised it was sprouting like that. Put it in a pot with soil but it cracked and died before it could grow a stem. Learning from your vid if I find another like that I'll know better how to care for it. I'll update on how my current experiment goes. I'll check out FB for your progress. I have to join again, was a member then quit.

TheKiwiGrower, thank you for sharing your method for starting a coconut from a husked coconut. I live in Los Angeles, CA and we are not tropical. Normally you can not grow coco palms here but I try every few years by using the kind that you can buy at the nursery that is already started and imported from Hawaii or Mexico. I have had some success keeping them alive but they die. I want to start one from the coconut like you in order to save money and have more fun doing it myself. Thanks!

You have a lovely backyard! You should also give us a tour of it. ^^ That's a decent size container you have for your coconut and I think it will do really well there. That's a nice idea with the plastic wrap. I do recommend that maybe poke holes around if you don't plant to remove the wrap for a while so there's some air circulation for the plant. Mine has not sprouted. I had two of them in a bag with some water in a dark warm place. Been a couple of months. I think it is a dud. BUT I was at the Chinese market looking for guava and saw the coconut selection and they had a couple that were sprouting. I bought the one that had the best looking one. I've bought there before a sprouting coconut but when trying to grow it died. This was two years ago. I'll try again but this time put in bag and see if the sprout grows more.

A coconut palm needs those conditions always. So I just say you should not let it get accustomed to the humidity it needs, but the dryness instead. So I maybe should not have built that greenhouse, but on the other side: it boosts growth a lot. So when it is too big for the greenhouse you could slowly start to take it off.
