The super scientific explanation: Long story short the water is salt water as the water travels it takes the salt with it since carboard is super pourious, but when the water reaches the end it starts to evaporate and since the salt can't evaporate it collects on the end of the carboard, since the water will evaporate there first! The colors are becuase of food coloring so technically speaking you can eat this it just will taste like salt
@matteodemeo2524 I dont think plastic or metal would work because it won't absorb the water like the paper does. It'll just stay on the bottom where it was poured.
It looks like simple salt water to me... I did these as a kid with salt water in a cup and a strand of string sticking out of it and the water slowly moved up the salt crystals on the string, where the water vaporized and left the salt crystals on the string.
Salt Crystal Garden Recipe and Instructions In a glass or plastic bowl, put some pieces of coal, porous brick, tile, or sponge. Day 1 - Over the base material, pour two tablespoons of water, two of table salt (iodized or plain), and two of MSB. Day 2 - Add two more tablespoons of salt - directly on top. Day 3 - Pour into the sides and bottom of the bowl (not directly on the base material or on any crystals that have begun to form) two tablespoons each of salt, water, and MSB. Add a few drops of food coloring directly on top of each piece. Please like if it was helpful😊
Pssssttt...MSB isn't important for this to work. It helps...it makes the end result prettier. But isn't that the same for any kind of luxury??? Lol! Possible without it, preferable with it.
Once I bought this at a science exhibition, placed the things mentioned in the directions guide, placed it under the bed, and went to sleep dreaming I would see the tree in full bloom. But my mom smashed it when she was cleaning my room it seems and when I woke up in the morning, the tree flew over somewhere and the plate where I put the tree remained LOL. I felt heartbroken as a kid😂
In my childhood we alway buy those thing in christmas, and for a long time, since grade 4 or 5 now im 24 yrs i now see this and it remind me of good old memories
My daughter & I love to do these crystal projects. I put more time into coloring the paper with different patterns & colours. Just to see how it'll turn out. Pretty cool

When I was a little kid, they sold monsters like this. It was a cartoon monster that stood up with two little cartoon feet. You would set it in a saucer, add the liquid and watch the monster grow fuzzy crystal hair.
I made these with my mom when I was a kid. We made the trees ourselves from construction paper and she made a mixture of liquid bluing and borax, I think, for the crystals.
