In the Last Frontier our short growing season requires months of preparation, from starting seeds indoors to cultivating healthy soil to nourish the plants. We plant an entire row of tomatoes in the high tunnel and carry out necessary tasks to ensure we have a successful garden.

Whenever I watch your videos, I think about all those years I wasted being ashamed and hateful of my life ,how I didnt really live, I was always in constant fear of running into someone I knew( because of a certain image I had portrayed) . I think about how I could have been happier and enjoyed those life experiences, now I know I'll never have those moments back.🌿 The day I came across one of your videos was the day i made a decision to be happy, to be free and to enjoy every moment that I am blessed with, that was when I also decided to share my story, the life I once hid from the world as to step toward self acceptance. 🌱 You helped me make that decision, you made me appreciate a rural life I once hated. Please don't ever stop making videos , you are an inspiration to so many people and the world is blessed simply because you both are in it. 🌈 P. S :To anyone reading this, enjoy every moment that you get to witness because you may never have them back and never be afraid of truly being yourself, who cares what anyone else thinks or says. 💚☀️

My family is from northern Russia and every spring my grandparents and parents put a loads of snow in their high tunnels. It works perfectly well 👍

Yes - that slow melt saturates the deep soil so it doesn't just evaporate off the top inch.

Rhubarb grows like a weed over winter. I'm from Michigan and our winters are bitter sometimes, but grandmas' Rhubard always came back better than ever. It of course helped that they were planted over the old outhouse! Grow on!

Here in New Zealand,.rhubarb grows in everyone's gardens haha. I cook my stalks with orange peel and a teabag. Tastes so good. If you're not a fan of rhubarb, are you aware you can't eat the leaves? Although asking... you're a competent grower.. so im sure you are

My parents have rhubarb in their back yard in Anchorage that they have to cut back every year to keep it from taking over, so you shouldn't have any problems overwintering.

I always get a huge smile when I see you have posted. Love watching you two live your dream! Your videos are not only enjoyable, they are also an education into slightly different lifestyles and have de-bunked a few things me, most notably Eric wearing a gun around. We don't do that in Canad, ever and when I first saw your videos, I was a little taken aback. I've learned that just because you like/wear guns, doesn't mean you're nuts etc. I feel very judgmental that I ever thought that! Thank-you for your beautiful videos that showed me how to can, garden, and learn a bit more about American culture. x

The crane! I love to hear them call. Where I am, it means winter is coming when they arrive. I keep a weather thermometer (like the kind with an indoor display and outdoor sensor) in my greenhouse to let me know what the 24 hour temp range was.

I have friends with a second “home” in the woods, they run an electric fence for deer, at least two lines possibly three I can’t recall. It absolutely works, but has given their dogs a little PTSD as well, just something to consider!

Yes they have a shorter challenging growing season , but their garden yields extraordinary amount of crops..large bounty and large vegetables.. Enough to feed them for the year until harvest the following year.. They've been doing this a long time they got it down to a science

No, the season is short, but extra hours of sunlight grow plants much faster and larger than what you expect closer to the equator.

I'm in Wisconsin and our growing season in the west central part of the state is comparable to this part of Alaska. Almost mid-may and we are still getting close to freezing over night.

I finally finished planting all my starts this past weekend. I discovered last year that the brassica family does much better where I am in the fall so I will wait for those this year. I'm looking forward to watching your garden grow again this year!

Just a little note for you as far as tomatoes are concerned, when I have drab tasting toms, I will add some baking soda to the soil to lower the pH level in the soil, makes the tomatoes sweeter. Also letting the roots run deeper by holding back on the water, the toms go into a water saving mode and thus making the tomatoes conserve the sugars. Harvest before watering, and the tomatoes will have a much better taste.

Yet another lovely video, may I suggest that when you next check an electric fence Eric, pick a blade of grass and place that on the fence, you will feel the energy in the grass if the fence is working but wont get a shock !

"We could put snow in the tunnel in the winter so it could melt down..." My father always did that in the greenhouse the years we got snow (we don't get snow every year over here (Belgium)) . He says that that is very good for the soil, because it's a slow proces to get moisture in the soil.

We had rhubarb in our small garden when I was growing up, we used to go out and pick a stalk and eat it if we were hungry when playing outside. Our strain was really durable and overwintered for 15 years or so until we sold the place. At the end of the year we used to go to the Berry U-Pick and then Mom would make strawberry-rhubarb pie. The combination was amazing. Something I think you should do. You can actually use any sweet berry to offset the sourness of the raw rhubarb.

Old trick is putting a dead fish under your tomato plants. Can confirm it works really well here in new england. Keep a head or tail after each trip in the freezer and add them a little deeper below the plants as you plant them. Try it with a pike head under one plant for fun.

Love love love your videos. My grandma swore by potash for tomatoes... and she grew some whoppers in her life time. Also her other tip was to use the water from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom (grey water). Keep up the great work... best wishes from the other end of the world, Australia

@@vernareed2692 oh, yes, that is a good reason to use gray water. I didn't connect the dots. Actually I recently sprayed my pepper plants with water and dishsoap to get rid of aphids or fruit flies or some little pests. I didn't think about reusing my gray water, so great tip!! Spraying worked 😜

I learned years ago, growing up on the farm to carry a stripped ended, piece of copper wire, bent into a U in my pocket to test electric fences. We couldn't always hear the click of the power, so if you just rest that on the line, it will create a quick spark, and you won't get jolted. I have to say Eric, you gave me a good giggle when you did that! I was thinking the whole time, "No, don't do it!!" :) Love watching you two work together, you are a great team and your approach is great.

I hope no birds never get accidentally killed by the electric fence, and your kitty never zaps herself. When I was a kid we had an electric fence to keep our big dogs from jumping out, it only took one zap, and they never tried agin!! But we did loose a few birds. Love seeing all your garden progress, I live in west Michigan and have no green house place, so I'm waiting to plant....it snowed today, and has been below 32° every night for quite a while plus we still have frost..........and I wait! 😁😁😁 Thank you for sharing!!!

I kill every plant I have but I watch fascinated how you plan out, formulate, fertilize, and schedule your crops. You have many green fingers my friend. Eric is an awesome partner to have in building, fixing, watering, consulting, etc. Gardening is a lot of work! Can’t wait. Thanks for this video.

Here in MN the rhubarb overwinters fine! We are still getting frosts here and our frostline is about 4 ft with winter temps well below freezing for 160 or so days and below 0 for about 30. We are still having frosts at night and our rhubarbs could actually be harvested some right now! I get about 4 harvests from late spring to early fall. GOod luck with them!

It''s not so bad getting rained out on our cash crop planting when you guys make a big video like this one! Talk about two peas in a pod, you two are made for each other. My heart would sing with joy to see a little one running around the homestead though. Hey, if you ever need to borrow one, we have 7 now!

I do in my greenhouse exactly what you mentioned when watering your beds. I shovel snow on all my beds so it melts and hydrates all the planting beds. And snow is one of the best sources of natural nitrogen which also helps the soil.

How much snow? We got a geodesic dome greenhouse late last July. This is our first full season trying to grow in it, and I haven’t heard anything about that before. We live in 4b

The crane sound is very familiar! We live in Florida and they are all over our development and I love it. We have a family that comes around and the baby’s name is Henry! I have a small garden, but hope to have more space to grow more vegis!

Rhubarb is a wonderful addition to your garden and will last for years to come. And then you can make rhubarb breads, preserves, chutneys, and sauces. Yum yum!

Me, too. I kept thinking "Why not put some of the snow in the high tunnel?" I know they don't want to handle snow anymore then they have to, but it would be for a good cause.
