I just wanted to tell you that your video really inspired me. I used to be an avid gardener until I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am very happy to say that I'm in remission now. Depression seemed to get the best of me, and I started looking for videos on container gardening. I feel so blessed that I found yours. So may God bless and prosper you in all that you do.

Last summer, I grew summer squash/zucchini in 7-gal grow bags. It started out great but in mid summer it was like the potting mix was depleted of organic material and never really produced well. I tried fertilizer and lime but large vegetables are more suitable for in-ground planting. Tomato plants did OK in the same grow bags and soil. I also grow hot peppers in 3-gal grow bags, and those plants produce like crazy.

When we were in lime at the home garden store, there were many people in line with us, who were purchasing the same things. Two orher people were making raised beds gardens too, and had the same supplies I had for the raised beds I just did today.

I found that putting wood chips in the bottom 1/3 of bags keeps excess water away from soil, retains water for dryer days, gives air to roots if they get that long, and since wood chips are free... less cost since less purchased potting soil is required. FYI Baby worms do find their way into bags if left on ground, which is also a benefit. I also throw in some kitchen scraps in the wood chip layer because it will decompose without requiring it to sit somewhere else first.

Those Smart Pots are pretty sweet, Kim, and I'm happy to see you promoting container gardening. It's such a great way for everyone to grow their own food whether you have a huge yard or tiny balcony. It's also great for people with limited mobility or those who can't physically maintain in-ground or raised bed gardens . Your garden is beautiful. I've been growing in Earthboxes, whiskey barrels and 5-gallon buckets for years with great success. After seeing this I may need to add Smart Pots to my collection. :)

TX Kim. I live in the deep Mojave Desert in SoCal. Out here I find growing in pots is necessary, but a BIG challenge because the pot gets too hot in the 110o+ air temps even in the shade and fries the roots. This year I experimented with wrapping a towel around the pot to completely shade it like a turban! I can also wet the towel to cool it like an evaporative swamp cooler if necessary in the extreme heat. IT WORKED!! Thought I'd share what I learned. We're all surviving here! :))

Hello Kim, thanks for a great video. Air pruning happens in these containers because when the root hits the side of the fabric, it dries and dies off instead of turning around and forming a ball like in plastic containers. This promotes the constant production of healthier roots instead of choking the container. Cheers
@richardmiesell4785
@richardmiesell4785 6 лет назад
If you grow any trees in containers then what you say is even more true. In plastic containers the roots will circle around. This is called girdleling. But with a fabric/air container the roots will end and then put out lateral fibrous roots, that will enable the tree to take in all the nutrients and water needed just so long as the soil gets enough rainfall or supplemental watering.

I've been growing in containers for years. Never had much success with Smart Pots. They tend to fall apart after about 1 or 2 seasons. The handles also deteriorate and eventually make it difficult to move them around. Had much better success with self watering containers fed with a drip or float system. Also found that Azomite, Epsom Salts and Mycorrhizae are beneficial to container grown veggies and fruits. Produced some amazing corn last year.

I put 3 tomatoes in a small pot and when the roots came out I put a bigger pot under the tomatoes. Here we use gates in the balcony and the doorway and I decided to put them in my balcony and let it go over the gate and it started to go down the gate. This was a experiment but it worked great. Since I'm in a wheelchair now I don't have to get some to one get my tomatoes I just put my hand through the gate and pick them myself. June will be a year and it gave me all year round since we live in the Caribbeans. .
