Your mango trees are awesome. Love the space you have too! I grew up with a mango tree in my house (it was strictly alternate bearing) - but we used to wait for the fruit. We used to ripen it bu keeping them in rice boxes. We also use raw mangoes chopped in a spicy gravy. Great memories, thanks for this video!

Always a pleasure to watch your growing space from the your deck. Great looking mangoes. India has excellent mangoes too, Alphonso being the king of mangoes. Our season starts May.

Thanks! Yes, India is renowned for mangoes - I love Indian food and mango chutneys (my mouth is watering thinking about it). I don't have an Alphonso tree because they are always sold out here in Oz - I should put one on order because they set well in the subtropics and as you say are very famous for great eating. Cheers :)

I am in Western Australia. We have a tree next door that we are allowed to pick the fruit. When they have a small hole or blemishes then we can cut around them. We have just dehydrated 2 buckets full and we have 2 draws of cut up mango in the freezer. Also they are still growing. Even now in 2023 the mangos here in Carnarvon they are $2.90 each. Thank you for your video as I am planning on growing a tree

@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 9 лет назад
Thanks, yes I can certainly fill a day easy enough on our small acreage. I haven't thought about doing a management video on my property but it's a very good idea! I should probably make it what I usually do in a week rather than a day because some tasks aren't daily and some are of course. I think that would be interesting and helpful. Thanks again for the input and idea - I'll see if I can knock something up. Cheers :)

If you grew a lot in the same area is not easy. The pest and disease is problematic. I seen mango farm making losses after several years. And this is in Malaysia and one of the least profitable fruits.

Yum yum mangoes, ….love them. I am jealous of your mango trees Mark :). I grew a couple from seeds (mostly as back-ups in case some of them die on me LOL) and I hope atleast one of them will grow into a mature tree. Last week, I bought 20 large mangoes at $1.50 each and they are sweet. The ones that are not ripe are also sweet. I don’t know the variety but man I would love a tree of that. I will go and check if they have ore I will buy them :D. In the past couple of weeks I have been buying another variety for $3 each, expensive but we just love our mangoes. Thank you for sharing this video, seeing your trees I wish mine will hurry up and give me some fruits :)

Great tip about the beak Mark - I'd never noticed it before. I usually just pick a few large green fruit and hope they ripen. Incidentally, if you cut the stem away from the fruit it doesn't spray sap and you avoid the black staining. You have some big mangoes on some small trees! I planted a grafted nam doc this year after watching your video last year. I also stumbled across a mango tree with very red skin over most of the fruit last week. I pulled over and snagged 3 fruit which I've ripened on the bench. Dark orange and tasty flesh - not sure on the variety but will be planting the seeds directly in the ground. Hope you're not getting too much water over there mate.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 9 лет назад
Hey Ben, yeah good tip about cutting the stem! I think finding a mango and giving a new tree a go can be pretty rewarding and since they grow so fast it doesn't take long to see if it's a dud. There are some newish varieties of mango coming on the market from the US - a little hard to get but I think diversifying is the key to having good crops of backyard mangoes each season. Nah, the rain has been great - I'm just finding it difficult to get a dry day to mow the lawn that's all... Cheers mate :)

wow this video is from 7 years ago.. we used to grow Bowen mangoes here is Horescamp just west of Gin Gin QLD but we lost our trees due to fires.. recently I have been given some Bowen mangoes from a lady I met who grows them not far from me ... luckily I have struck 5 seeds.. but this time I was thinking of growing them in containers... just wondering what your thoughts and probability of fruiting would be...

Got a nice orchard there Mark. Cutting back the mango tree was a good move in eliminating the black spot fungus. Besides letting the air circulate you also most likely removed all the infected parts of the tree. Have a good one :)

How would you start a mango from a seed?
@clubgus07
@clubgus07 2 года назад
Mark I reckon Organic is best, Glenn mango is what i believe is a great variety to grow the tree doesn’t grow too tall so fruit picking is easier. Thats the problem with blemishes its the sap burn. A pale of water when picking the mangoes and immediately placing them in the water will stop the sap burn. yeah its difficult to go to the source of Mango production like places Mareeba and Atherton Tablelands and expecting mangoes to be dropping on the towns roads, unfortunately i was out of season by 2 months on my visit to Mareeba so the very kind Italian owners of the Mango orchid offed to sell me dehydrated mango and frozen mango off course theres associated electricity costs that go to selling frozen and dehydrated mango chunks that are passed on but at least i got it from the source without the supermarket sprays.. thx for the tour

Unripped citric mangoes are meshed up wit non sweat yogurt & bit of salt with black pepper to make a great delight of sub continent called "chatni". Also, one can make unripped citric mangoes pickles in apple cider vinegar with salt & black seeds.

+RizaT333 Gday and thanks mate, yeah I reckon you could grow mangoes in Vic (privately not commercially viable) but in a nice warm sheltered spot I would give it go! I've seen mangoes growing well in places like Toowoomba, which has pretty cold, windy winters up there but given a little care it can be done and with good success. Cheers :)

See the black line running down the mango from the stem and the rotten part you pressed your thumb into...what is it? We inherited our mango tree, some years it fruit okay but we've only had one season in the 17 years we've been here that it has given us a really good crop, we've tried spray but it made no difference and like you I'd rather not, we have pruned the tree but we still get both the rot, and black line and have found both of those make the fruit go rotten before it ripens.

I’m interested in growing mangoes from seeds and I was told it takes years to get a mangoes to fruits. What video do you have for a city rookie who want a mango tree that doesn’t grow beyond 7feet if possible. I would like to try grow from seed in a pot on a very very small yard or balcony size space. Any full video or educational video would be greatly appreciate.

Fruit fly rarely sting out mangoes unless we leave the fruit to fully ripen on the tree then it's about 50/50. I tend to pick ours just as they are starting to turn colour but still pretty hard because if the fruit fly don't get them the flying foxes and possums surely will! Cheers :)
