This is far and away the most useful RU-vid channel on being a working DP. I love that you don't fuss over video quality and instead focus on conveying information, your strategy, and how you select and use gear. This is now appointment viewing for me. Also, hang in there on the subscribers. I've noticed that most creators get a nice chunk up front, then have to fight to get to 10K. But once they do, it seems to get easier and easier from there. I don't know if you follow Luc Forsyth, but for the longest time he was lingering under 1000 subs and I couldn't figure out why. He's really good, too. It's a game of patience and persistence ... qualities I can tell you have in spades.
Oh, I had Payboo for a while. It was great until they rebooted the program with a new card issuer, which forced me to reapply for a new card but ... the new bank had massive technical issues with new applications. I never did get a new card. Hopefully that's sorted out now. But the savings are real!
@@scotey This content style isn’t for everyone but it seems to be benefiting a few people who stop by. Yeah every time Luc or Cranky Cameraman posts, I have to watch. I like crankys style more and that’s why I copied it. Real world information that you can use on set. In fact, I often find myself rewatching his videos and finding new value after a few months since I’ve gone through more experiences.
Don't go changing, man. The more polished a vlog becomes, the less authentic it tends to become. People are watching because of who you are and what you share. Also, selfishly, you'll post a lot more videos if you're not focused on lighting every shot and layering in music and other non-essential stuff. :)
Payboo is great, I use it about once a month, no tax. Sony, I shoot AVC-L unless clients ask for I. If we have a dedicated media manager, then I'm happy to shoot I. Blue=L=Ch1. Red=R=Ch2. Congratulations on the new camera.
Ahh I must’ve misheard the “Blue” 2 thing in your recent video. Well I’ve said it in my head a few times so I think it’s already stuck 😄 Do you have any issues pairing slog3 with long gop 8 bit. Any banding or artifacting? And I’m so excited for the form factor. Big change from the dslr style of c70.
@@davidmorefield My FX9 shoots are mostly cinetone or LOG but not aggressive grades. For the "high-end" post pipeline we shoot SLog3 and "I" but those are less common. Most of my producers want ready-to-edit footage vs requiring an aggressive color pass.
@@CrankyCameramanalso the fx9’s long gop footage is 10bit but the fx6 you have to record all I to get 10bit. Weirdly enough, I did a shoot with the fx6 thinking it matched the fx9 in that spec and shot in the 8bit long gop (thinking it was 10bit) and I had no idea till later on when I learned that. Didn’t notice at all in the grade which was strange to me
FYI the record time is a datarate difference, The fx6 at XAVC is recording at 240 mb/s vs Canon's 410 mb/s, nearly double the datarate gives half the time.
@@davidmorefield Yah frame rates are a factor too, but the biggest in that moment was the datarates. Sony just uses higher compression in general than Canon. Even on the intraframe codecs. That being said, you just can't get 10 bit on the Sony if shooting interframe codecs since the datarate is too low to allow for it. While on Canon, since it's datarate is 160mb/s in 4k dci it can handle 10bit.
Hi there! First off, I just wanted to point out that you were comparing 4k 24p (23.98) on the FX6 to 4k 30p on the C70, if you set the FX6 to 4k 30p you will only get 54 minutes instead of 66 minutes on that 128GB card. Still more than the 30 minutes on the C70 but I wanted to be fair here and compare 'like to like'. Also wanted to give you a few tips on the FX6. First off, make sure you are not using firmware 1.0. The firmware has been updated and includes a bunch of new goodness, including touch tracking autofocus, breathing compensation, cache record (even in 4k 120) and so on. It's free to upgrade the firmware so make sure you have at least 2.0 if not 3.0 Also I'd download Catalyst Browse. It's also free and gives you stabilization which uses the built in gyro data on the FX6. Much better than 'warp stabilizer' or other NLE built in tools. Downside is you can only do one clip at a time (no batch processing) and you may need to up your shutter speed to make sure there is no motion blur (when it stabilizes your camera, the background might move and blur a little if you are moving too much.) But it's a free program so play around with it! You can dial in the amount of stabilization you want or dial it back if the default is too much. Sony released some free LUTs for their Venice which also work on the FX6 (they both use Slog 3/cine profiles) so I'd grab those as well, they look nice. Alister Chapman has released some free ones as well and the Phantom LUTs are pretty well regarded by FX6 owners if you want to purchase any. Finally if doing timelapse on the FX6 make sure you use 'interval recording' instead of 'S&Q.' This gives you access to the slower shutter speeds to give you the 'smeary headlights' look instead of the 'stuttery' look. Instead of having 1/48 (or even 1/2) shutter speeds you can get '2F, 4F' all the way up to.'64F' shutter speeds. Now sometimes you may want a 'stuttery' look but generally these are the 'secret sauce' to making your timelapse's look better. Any questions on the FX6 feel free to ask! It's a great camera (so is the C70 but you probably know that one better than I do :)
Hey Gabe, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your insight. Yes, now I realize the frame rate discrepancy. But the fx6 knowledge is really valuable as well. I probably won’t be doing any post stabilization on the fx6 but still good to know about catalyst. And I love that the fx6 can do a proper timelapse. C70 is limited to a stutter y one. I was never happy with it. I might be selling it and getting an fx3 as a b cam. Basically the international job I’m doing this week will help me decide. Thanks again for the comments.
not a camera issue but regarding sales tax, not sure what the laws are in Florida but in PA if you are registered business and collecting sales tax from customers you are also exempt from paying sales taxes on equipment that you purchase for your business. You can then register with B&H as tax exempt account, and they will sell you items tax free. Again, I'm sure laws vary by state but just a heads up.
Also there are a ton of aftermarket solutions to mount an evf or monitor that would be better suited than buying the Sony mount and modifying it. It’s not strong enough to properly support the smallhd
I haven’t found any that position the monitor to the side like an evf and pivot on both axis without sagging. Shape has some nice options from their revolt series but you have to push the release button to change position, which would require two hands. I’m hoping to find something more efficient than that. Have you seen any of these Sony mounts tear or anything like that?
@@davidmorefield the Sony mounts tend to get weak over time and sag or move when you don’t want them to from several accounts I have seen. Which is why people upgrade it to the shape and other versions.
Dude, before checking out with B and H make a cart, have it ready, call their phone number and ask if they can work with you on the price. They'll ask for your cart ID and give you discounts AND you can still use the card (which if you get approved for is awesome for 12 month interest free financing or them covering the sales tax)
I suggest keeping the Sony Monitor on for the very useful touch functions and adding your third party monitor for your normal use. When you flipped the Sony monitor out of the way, just have it facing out so you can use the touch function. Just my thoughts.
You should really get some native E-mount glass for your FX6. You bought one of the greatest autofocussing cameras around, for which you will not get nearly the performance with adapted glass. Not necessary to get very expensive glass, the Sony 35mm f.1.8 (SEL35F18F) for example is a great video lens.
Yeah I think in due time. As for now, I'm coexisting between canon and sony, so adapting is fine for the time being. I'm actually surprised at how well its working with the MC-11. Honestly I'll go straight for the trinity. 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200. I prefer zooms for my workflow. Extremely convenient.
@@davidmorefield You could even consider doing it with 2 lenses nowadays, depending on how much reach you need. Tamron makes the 35 - 150mm f2-2.8 which is also really nice for video. Add a wide angle zoom and it may bring you a long way, provided you don't need more telephoto reach. Many nice choices for E-mount.
I have the b&h paboo. I recommend it only if you are good with money. They charge $2 a month if you use special financing for 6-12 months plan. It's great if you want to save on tax if you can pay off right away. You should check smallrig adjustable evf mount.
I use Payboo all the time. Not too long ago there was no tax applied when buying out of state. But since now tax is applied, the Payboo card has come in clutch.
I did exactly what you're talking about for your monitor. I got a few pieces from SmallRig and configured a monitor mount that gives me all the rotation, tilt, and swivel I need. I can send you some pictures of it if you'd like.
I do the Payboo, just to save on tax. I also do the Adorama VIP Rewards....you get points on purchase, but you can also return anything within 60 days, no questions asked. Congrats on the FX6.
I thought about it and dismissed the idea. I use autofocus for a lot of my work and don’t want to deal with the reduced af area. Plus I’d rather have the polarizer in the adapter.
I like your style dude! I would love to know how you get into this kind of work full time… for me right now it’s only a dream but I hope one day it becomes a reality. Making videos is my favourite thing to do!
Man are you in luck. I just did a complete breakdown of how I got here. Lmk if you have any questions! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gforIvXKJDs.html
I have the B&H card and it’s been a lifesaver! The statements are a bit confusing to read compared to a year ago when it was a different bank they used, but the benefits are great for large purchases. Adorama has one as well … and look into Paypal Credit for 6 months interest free on a lot of manufacturer sites (tilta, etc). I often divide orders up to keep each one the minimum amount possible in case I can’t pay it off in time, then the interest will only be charged on those smaller portions left over if that makes sense. So far so good though!
I do Payboo as well. I usually purchase through B&H over Amazon when it’s going to be the same price. I know that I’ll be saving myself tax and on larger ticket items such as a camera I can save a lot of money. But, I usually pay it off within a month or two.
Actually I haven’t figured that out yet. My large stand is 44” and my suitcase is 30”. Recently my work has all been by car so there’s no restrictions but I’m looking into using a golf bag in the future. I keep seeing traveling photographers putting their stands in those.
Ok thanks ....have found inexpensive amazon stands which are fine for inexpensive flex flat panel light however there not the best lights and the stands not very sturdy for like an Amazon 60d and softbox looking for way to travel with sturdy stands ....
Raw LT is not a practical workflow for my clients. I have never had a client ask for anything past 10bit, actually. Perhaps for a personal production or something that you can manage the workflow. But usually is not viable when delivering to client, even if I takes less storage.
Great work! What are your thoughts on losing audio without the OEM handle on the FX6? Are there workarounds for this? That's been my main hold up making the switch. I build my rig out with an external monitor and not sure it would work as well with the Sony handle? The AF seems to be the main advantage.
My work around is buying an fx3 😅. Fx6 isn’t designed for that application unfortunately. C70 can do all that and more but has other disadvantages. I will be keeping the oem handle to maintain the electronic buttons on top.
Hey David, I found your channel last week and as a c70 user, I binged every vlog. Really appreciate your insights. I totally understand your reasoning for transitioning into a Sony system for your business needs, but I'm wondering why you never considered using an R5c as a B cam with your c70. Any thoughts about it? I haven't used the R5c myself but have been considering it as a B cam option. Thanks!
Hey I’m glad the vlogs are useful. Yes, quite a few reasons: poor battery life, no c-log 2, no dual card slots with same media type, no internal nd. It seems a camera that offers more problems than it solves.
@@davidmorefield Thanks for the quick reply. I hear you on the c-log 2, but it seems that most of the time you need a B cam your on mains power. Maybe I'm wrong about that. Anyway, looking forward to your journey into Sony. It would be tough for me to make the change because I've invested in some expensive RF lenses.
How long did you pay for vid lead and production hub before you received your first job from either one of those. I had a lead about a week ago but they said the producer canceled. I'm also concerned about being Black in a majority White industry.
I have never heard of vid lead but I worked a job from production hub within a month. But it by no means, guarantees you work. It just shows clients your profile and work. So if your work is not good enough or not what they are looking for then they will not reach out to you. Also being in Fl, there is a lot of diversity in the industry. Lots of Latin people in the mix. I don’t think race has too much influence since you get to choose what market you want to market yourself in. Example, if I want to market to black or latin productions, chances are that I’m not getting it bc they are more comfortable with people in their circle. However, I will say I have seen many people cross that boundary bc they work is amazing and undeniable. And the clients value that more than other factors. They want their money to be worth it. Does that make sense?
I got so hooked on his videos that it inspired me to start my own vlog. I copied the style, format and even his title card. 😂 I figured that I love watching it so others would too.
@@javebjorkman bro Watch Vlog 032 and you see how much I benefited. There’s subscribers all over the world and you never know how the network can help each other out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g40OeQ79Rgo.html
I have 4 cards and they handle 4k 120 without problem on c70. 1 card gave me issues, I complained to AB, sent them the card for diagnosis. and they gave me a replacement in 1 week. No other problems. But don’t go below 128. 64gb has issues for some reason. And also make sure it says v90 mark ii.
@@davidmorefield gotcha, looking to star being redundant on the my FX3 so I’m thinking of getting a couple of AB 512s instead of the Progrades. They’ve never given me any issues, but I’d like to step it up a little in terms of speed/capacity/quality without going to the express cards. You’re vlogs are calming! Keep up the great work!
Nooooo Sony lol jk congrats on the fx6. I’m going to be sticking with my c70 for the foreseeable future just because I love the image quality coming of out it but I’m sure you’ll make some sick stuff with the fx6!
I’m officially a Sony boi now. 😂 I can’t wait till I can actually film something cool with it. Funny enough my Bahamas trip is a Sony production, I finally have a Sony but I’ll be filming on the c70 still haha
bro, you buying luggage for gear and not clothes? haha I need to be on your level lol I just got an fx6 myself. It came out of the box completely bricked...
