Nissan changed the rules of racing with the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R. It earned the name Godzilla by dominating everything Toyota, Honda, BMW and Ford had to offer. The RB26DETT and ATTESA ET-S system turned the R32 GT-R into the fastest production car. Find out how the top secret 901 Movement created the GT-R and many other cars at Nissan in the 90's.

Fun fact: every generation of the GT-R, starting from the R32 have set a lap record at the Nürbugring. No wonder why Porsche were so salty and accused Nissan of cheating.
@tom.m

Weren't they sort of right tho? I thought that was part of the reason official rules were created only a few years later.
@a.m3687
@a.m3687 4 месяца назад
@@tom.m I won't call it cheating. Most of the cars that have set a lap record at the Ring was not 100% factory stock. Including Porsches, Vipers and etc. Porsche runs their cars with the deletion of A/C, Audio and Communication systems. Also with the racing bucket seat from the GT3 Cup race car. What made them look salty was that they accused Nissan of cheating without any proof. In my opinion those times doesn't matter and cannot be compared. Because we never know what damper settings, tyre pressures and weight reductions the manufacturer is using to shave off seconds for the actual lap time.

A thing I learned recently is if you look up the lap times for the GTR Skylines, You will find that the R32's lap was in wet conditions. in comparison to the R33 and R34. R32 did a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 8:22.38, Key point here, That lap was In the wet. R33 did it in 7:59.887 In the dry. R34 managed a 7:52 again in the dry. But, at the end of the R32 in 1994 they took it around the Nürburgring Nordschleife and managed a time of 7:49 in the dry in a R32 N1 GTR. Because this was faster than the upcoming R33, it was kept quiet.
@a.m3687
@a.m3687 Месяц назад

In the second half of the 1980s I worked for a major automotive magazine, and went to Nissan to interview a few brasses, including Yasuharu Namba of NISMO. He was a man of small stature, friendly and gentle and yet not prone to over-familiarity, and I couldn't help sensing that he always had a couple of projects being developed inside his head at all times. When Yutaka Kume announced the 901 movement, almost everyone at the editorial office was skeptical as Nissan seemed like a basket case at the time, I was one of two who were convinced that they're going to pull it off. With hindsight, those were the heady, glory days: heroes could well be those mild-mannered middle-age men in suits and ties, with the fires of a teenager within them.

I figured out really quick after asking some friends about it though. You have to remember that even into the mid-90's most cars on the road were fairly boxy. A Skyline with a GTR drivetrain would've fit as a sleeper, but the GTR looked quite a bit different than a regular Skyline.

Oh man, I got to say that SQUIDD didn't just elevate the bar for video essay documentaries about cars, SQUIDD shattered it. It's not just the great editing, or the superb reading and good voice. It's the text and how everything comes together with that. I'm not the first one to point out how good these videos are, but damn. Even the carefully considered cussing to really put the emphasis when needed. During that era Aussie had strict rules governing a certain percentage of Australian manufactured content in mass produced cars known as the Australian Design Rule (ADR). As a result Aussie GTRs were further developed by Nissan Australia and had better engine cooling and no 180 km/h speed limiter. They are better overall than JDM cars. as both a car lover and a G fan (Godzilla), how can you not love the nickname they gave the GT-R. An all conquering monster of immense power, unrivalled, undefeated, unmatched. Such a shame that they stopped allowing them to compete here in Australia - the protective union mindset of trying to protect the local manufacturing industries was counter productive. Instead of getting innovative to regain that competitive edge, they got complacent and lazy.

I wouldn't say undefeated and unmatched..... In short circuits the e30 M3 and 190e bested the GTR ,and in longer tracks the 993 was better.... The GTR didn't have much success in Europe besides Spa. Europe was way more competitive then Australia..... For example AC schintzer won 4/5 at willington 500, that race included the Australian teams along with nismo. The GTR lost to e30 m3 a good handful of times in willington 500 and Macau......

@@Wiiillllson151 I feel you. I ordered a Athens Blue G35 with many special upgrades from Japan in 2007. It is still mint with 30K miles. It is a "Baby GTR" . 6 speed RWD, track switch, tire melter. It can go 0-60 in 5 seconds and hits 185 mph tops. On the track it passes 911s . This car was so under rated.

Absolutely LOVED this video! I remember watching the GTR thoroughly dominate the competition at Bathurst, and falling in love with it. That dominance spawned a love affair, and a cult following here in Australia that is probably stronger now than ever, so much so that most of us can't afford one. What we can afford however is the GTR's forgotten baby brother, the GTS-4. With basically the same attessa system, hiding behind an RB20 instead of the legendary RB26, it's ripe for those of us who can forgive it's lesser nameplate for the opportunity to create something a little different, but much more affordable.

The r32 is the car that got me into cars. I was a 90s kid that only had access to my dads old car mags until the early 2000s. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Had the r32 in them for one reason or another and I fell in love with its goofy style of sedan-esque/performance car styling and those 4 round brake lights. The constant wins of the skyline line didn’t hurt either. This documentary only servers to further enhance my love for the car and it’s weird case of being both under and over rated.

Absolutely spot on. The best automotive doco format I have seen. I started in the car trade 1979. In Australia V8s ruled until mid 80s and then Nissan unleashed its turbo 4cyl blue birds ?. This video was so great on detailing the technical history and matching social responses worldwide. I was at Bathurst when Godzilla one. Rainy day big crashes really close racing,and the GTR blasted all that challenged. I worked at Holden GMH. The Nismo teams opened the eyes of many, professionals involved with advances that were developed at the same time as they raced. Electronic data that other companies dreamed about referencing, the GTR had destroyed all that year in group A. The footage of the races in this doco was well edited and covered GODZILLA and the achievements with out bias. Well done.

Fred Gibson motorsport played a big role in developing the GTR Godzilla, 4 wheel drive 4 wheel steer. They failed in initial year 1990 dominated in 1991 & had all the dramas of the declared 1992 bathurst 1000's. They were the best car on the track in 92, there is no doubt of it but whether they really belonged to be there is highly questionable

I never knew that little tid bit about Nissan acquiring a 959 and reverse engineering it. I've been a JDM loyalist and race fan since the early 90's and had never heard that. Makes total sense. The 959 was next level dominance in nearly every way. I can still remember the grade school book fair poster of the red 959 cabriolet that hung next to a posterized shrine to Michael Jordan on the walls of my childhood room

The bigger the manufacturer, the more likely they buy a few competitors' cars to scrutinize them. They call it "benchmarking". Little did anyone know in the '80s, that by 2008 Porsche would buy a Nissan GT-R to try it for themselves at the Nurburgring.
