From the mind of a South African madman,
Came a machine capable of knocking down the giants,
Porsche.
Ferrari.
Lamborghini.
All came to know the answer to the question,
What if a car was created without rules?
That car… would be the world’s first hypercar.
The McLaren F1.
This is THE SQUIDD, a channel devoted to telling boring stories BOLDLY. Automotive icons, car company calamities, supercar legends and underdog heroes. All told through the lens of The Squidd, automotive content creator famous for being a dude with bad hair.

How often did he have to hit the brakes for the slow pokes going 120 mph in a BMW in the left lane? In 1978 at age 11 I was on The Autobahn with my parents in a rental car. My dad driving and my Nervous Nelly mom in the front passenger seat. I was in the left side of the rear seat. Trucks were limited to about 60 mph in the right lane. When my dad would see a car flying up from behind he would have to slam on the brakes and squeeze between two trucks. At the time trucks had their exhaust down in the rear, just the right place for it to blow into your cars ventilation system. Some of the cars that passed us in the left lane went by so fast it was a blur.

i loved that, along with how comfortable it apparently felt to drive the F1 at 391 kmph... normally, at that kind of speed, a driver on a conventional road is, wisely, not talking and rather scared for his life. the only concern here seemed to be not enough adrenaline.

Growing up the F1 was always "the car" that was the exception in discussions. The unicorn we all knew existed yet still felt more like a myth. Hell, even today it's the only car prior to 2000 listed under production cars with a sub 11 sec 1/4 mile. Oddly, some questionable Wikipedia editor apparently removed it as the 90's top speed car... 🤨

Great job! I didn't know this video was " long ". It seemed like 10 minutes. The humor was great. The history of the F1 car and Gordon Murray was complex. Complexity takes time to thoroughly cover. You covered this so good, with humor well placed, that not a second was boring and the story flowed really good. This is what turned an actual 35 minute long video into what feels like a " 10 minute long video " . Well done and keep'em coming.

@19:26 VANOS is not BMW's version of VTEC. VANOS is cam phasing that changes valve timing, not valve lift and duration. Valvetronic is BMW's version of VTEC. The McLaren F1 did not have Valvetronic. The first BMW engine to have Valvetronic was the N42 in 2001. The McLaren F1 engine was the S70/2 which was based on the S70B56 (used only in the E31 850CSi) but with the head design of the S30B52 (used in the E36 M3). The S30B52 had double VANOS (intake and exhaust phasing) thus the McLaren F1 had double VANOS.

I stood a foot away from it and was completely speechless. My wife didn't understand. I didn't say anything for probably the next 45 minutes of me looking at it. For 25+ years of imaging and reading what it might be, then to physically see it. It just let me with no words. That's how awesome this car is. It still is in my book one of the best cars ever made. This car wasn’t anticipated in 1993 like modern hypercars are. It was released into an economic recession immediately after the financial disaster that was the Jaguar XJ220. At £400,000 people who initially placed deposits on the Jaguar asked for their money back and eventually went to court to get it. Then McLaren released the F1 at £540,000 plus VAT tax. It was insane. Of the 300 cars McLaren planned to make there were only 62 interested buyers.

Seriously, you did such an amazing job! ❤️
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
Never understood the hype over Lamborghinis, Ferrari's or Porsches. Heck even the ''cheapest'' ''low grade'' Japanese cars offered far more especially the tuning scene. Granted maybe harder to obtain one to some, idk ... depends where you live. But still. When it comes to Viper it was just another suicide car. But in our case a friend had one and basically broke down not even at high speeds and we had to wear fire resistant suits in the car mind you even with the roof open it was boiling inside from underneath ... It was one of the overpriced pathetic cars that just didn't do anything in return it should do. So yeah it broke down only to sit broken for decades since repairing it was out of question too. The same money went into another car instead. ONE THAT ACTUALLY CAR BE DRIVEN AND ENJOYED ! XD So overall I will always have respect for M F1 and then Japanese cars. But heck today even most cars are just blatant downgraded copies of JP cars. The difference even that other stack up the prices bcs you paying for a stupid brand and not actual quality. It came down to that Germany basically makes cars anywhere but in country of origin and uses the cheapest trash possible for decades now.

@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy you would understand the hype for them if you were alive from the 60s to 90s. That was a time when there was massive limits on tuning and no one else was offering racecar performace/tech for the road. And you have to remember, ferrari and porsche were originally racing companies that sold road cars to fund their racing. So those cars got the latest and greatest tech. In the modern day the tuner scene and sports cars have come a long way so it is easy to say "I don't understand supercar hype". Watch some documentaries on cars like the Porsche 959 and Enzo Ferrari's life and you'll understand a little better

Thanks for mentioning this, I cringed at that as well. Inconel is a Special Metals Corporation trade name for a series of nickel-based superalloys (rather than a single material) that exhibit corrosion resistance far superior to stainless steels while also exhibiting strength comparable to hardened alloy steels...except, whereas most steels get softer and weaker in proportion to rising temperature, Inconels remain almost the same strength all the way up to about 1200F, just before they melt. Inconels are used for all sorts of high temperature, high corrosion environments, particularly around combustion, such as turbines (jets, turbochargers, and power generators), exhaust systems (piping and bolts), and piston engine exhaust valves.

Great video. I'm sure someone has already pointed it out to you but the alloy is "Inconel" not "Iconel". It was developed by the International Nickel COmpany (The Inco in Inconel). Its most famous use is probably in the Pratt & Whitney J58 (AKA JT11D-20) axial-flow turbojet engines of the Lockheed A-12, YF-12 and SR-71 Blackbird. The plane demanded the cutting edge of material science and even though the alloy was invented in 1932, it was still on the bleeding edge of technology when they decided to use it to replace the Waspaloy of the diffuser case. The Waspaloy diffuser case welds were cracking under pressure (which isn't particularly desirable in a jet engine) so it needed to be replaced. The Diffuser case is the part that is used to join the compressor to the combustor. It contains the highest pressure in the engine and as a result requires an incredibly material to do the job properly. Cool video man.
