Interesting fact: reflections in water are not reflections, but mirrored models put under the map since at that time reflections couldnt be made easily as today!
That's what's beautiful about early 2000s games. Developers had very limited resources but they had passion so they figured out ways to implement features like reflections even though they couldn't do a perfect simulation. GTA III was made with passion. DE was made as a cash grab.
@@CinematicSeriesGaming Absolutely, mister! Also, I just wanted to let you know I really, really appreciated these two videos you made on the "Definitive" Edition. I even shared it with a friend, and he seems to have enjoyed it, too! What a fantastic job you did there, and I love the part, on the first video particularly, where you mentioned the drastic changes Grove Street Games made in terms of atmosphere - I'm a huge fan of game's atmospheres in general, and haven't seen many people talk about GTA3's with that same attention to detail. Thanks for taking the time to make both of these videos! The montage is also pretty funny as well as entertaining, I might add; I laughed a lot, you have no idea! xD
actually they are vertically mirrored and not rotated in any way, but they at least *exist* in old GTAs. actually that makes me wonder, are these mirrored reflection-like models still present in definitives yet just not visible due to opaque textures and shit design of definitives in general? 🤔
@@cones3283 but this has been an eye opener to all the small stuff that most of us never noticed, like the newspapers on the ground or banners swaying in the wind. There are modern AAA games that still don't do such details.
Rockstar was ahead of it's time. There is a reason why this game is celebrated as one of the best games on the Playstation 2. These "remasters" just took a stinky dump on the legacy of these games and it's heart breaking to see. Though those of us who pay more attention saw it coming as soon as we heard War Drum (Grove Street Games) was involved... that and the fact there was no review copies and almost no footage until release. When they launched the 10th anniversary editions and the 360 port of san andreas, it seems like most people ignored it or just let it slide but this time I'm glad to see most people won't tolerate this, it's just a shame this mess still sold 10 million though. Hopefully a lot of refunds. Amazing mods died for this...
Sad on how this could have been one of the greatest game remasters of all time, but some how Rockstar managed to mess it up. Or simply they just didn't care.
@@Basket_Propellors It's probably because they wanted something out for the holidays. So they gave it the blind eye and let it ship before being finished. I have the Nintendo Switch version, yeah, I got scamed.
@@notfatigue3169 I hope they know better now than to outsource to grove street games ever again and that they allocate some resources to finish fixing it.
I'm quite sure this is way more undercooked than FNAF Security Breach ever was, and even Hello Neighbor (which was also developed on the Unreal Engine) had its issues yet still worked sometimes. It's especially telling when they literally ported the mobile ports' code over and made plugins (one is called "UnrealRage", taken from the folder called *Rageunreal* after unpacking the game) allowing for running 3D era GTA games while Unreal Engine 4.26 does the rendering. The best part about this half-baked mess has to be that San Andreas DE included the Hot Coffee minigame and audio files for expired radio songs, which simply get skipped thanks to code but can be restored.
These games in their original release format are truly masterpieces of their time. The art style is really beautiful and still holds up well today in my opinion.
I paid $60 for this? I can’t believe that Rockstar did this to us, I swear I wouldn’t have predicted that this would happen in a million years. Unbelievable.
Before the trilogy was released, some screenshots of gta3 came out and I ended up noticing that everything was poorly done and commented on Twitter and many rockstar fans insulted me and called me ignorant saying that the games were remasters and not remakes ???? It was horrible, what makes me sad is that there are people who still accept the shit that rockstar does
@@astrius4125 How? I don't get it, RE2R was a remake, this is a "remaster". Two different things, RE2R is not 1:1, and it was never supposed to be, so therefore it's not missing content. Blinded fans have nothing to do with your bad take.
@@JDelwynn You can say whatever you like, but the truth of the matter is the original had 4 scenarios and many more interactions between the characters. The Remake had two copy-paste campaigns that weren't even consistent to one another. They could've remade Leon's campaign only and stans like yourself would still say ' 'tiZ not a 1:1 ReMaksE, yOu tRolLin' m8' and 'shut up and take my money'.
"The Definitive Edition" is like someone who bought a very luxurious and expensive palace, and then didn't bother to furnish it, and instead decided to fill it primitive basic tools and beds made with rocks and tree leaves, then because that someone was too lazy to go to the forest and gather those materials, decided to fill the palace with cushiony smelly garbage bags instead of making proper pillows to sleep and set on.
Liberty City is supposed to be gray dark and gritty. It's not supposed to fucking look like Vice City with bright blue water what the fuck were they thinking???? 🤦🏾♂️
Man, I remember the jump from GTA 2 to 3, it was so cool. Such a shame that TakeTwo doesn't give a damn to the game that put them on the map. They would not be the giant that they are without this game to build the base for their later games.
Awesome point out man. But I think for the reflection, the original game uses fake reflection, one asset sits on its duplicate vertically with a puddle texture in between so you can always see the reflection from all direction. For definitive edition they using screen space reflection which will reflect everything on screen if the camera is pointed horizontally , bad news is if your camera angle points directly at the at the reflection texture it won't show up as seen in this video. With that I'd prefer the original reflection
Water surfaces are not reflective at all in the remaster. From any angle. It's a shame that a primitive technique from 20 years ago looks better than a modern remaster using Unreal Engine 4.
Some of the features in DE that act as bells and whistles can probably be ported back to the RenderWare-based games, particularly in the reverse-engineering projects if those come back from the dead.
@@hottrin6103 rockstar releasing this "product" is nothing but shameful and a complete disrespect towards their costumers, even though idiots still buy it. if you actually bough this crap you should rethink on how you value your money.
I'm under the impression that T2 or R* paid a bunch of people in India to make accounts and say that the game is fine. There's so much wrong even after multiple patches, how can people defend it?
Congrats man, I think the GTA videos are giving your channel some more traction! I'm glad it's starting to work out for you, if anybody deserves it you do.
@@CinematicSeriesGaming Anytime. I've been doing what I can by commenting on your posts to bring traction, it's good to see more people are doing the same now. All you gotta do now is just keep up the amazing content!
This is the GTA that really introduced me to GTA. Sure, I played some GTA2 before this, but I didn't really like the top down aspect. GTA3 is more than that, even, it's the game that made me fall absolutely in love with the sandbox exploration genre. I had some great times with Claude, and bizarrely, the Bobcat pickup. And to see what they'd done to my most cherished memory... look how they massacred claude! Look how they massacred my boy! If I were on the dev team, this release would have reminded me a lot of the ending of Skyrim's Civil War questline. Standing next to the victorious leader, you could decide if you wanted to take some credit for how everything played out, or stand back and not be involved. In this case, I would've taken the latter and begged them to keep my name out of the credit roll. This is an insult to GTA's glory days, and to game development as a whole. It's a complete disgrace. I worry about GTA VI.
GTA 2 was one of the most fun games I ever played back in 1999 , and only the REAL OGs know about those dayz , I loved the top down aspect , I didn’t need GTA to be in 3D to love it , i remember seeing GTA 3 in a magazine in 2000 , I knew it would be big then unlike %99 of these new age kids
pretty much the same for me i started at 8 years old playing gta 2 then my aunts son gave me gta 3 on ps2 because he had vice city, then when i finally started to get comfortable with vice city san andreas was starting to come out.
correction : the reflection in the first comparison on the original gta iii isn't actually real time reflection, it's just a duplicate mirrored building underneath the ground with a semi or fully invisible ground, older games used this trick many times to create fake reflections or mirror rooms ( gta sa created mirror rooms using this trick )
This is why early 2000s games were so cool! Developers had limited resources but they were passionate and utilized everything they got to make their games awesome. This trick allowed them to have seemingly reflective surfaces without doing the actual simulation. The remaster is running on UE4 so there should be no problem with adding actual reflections. But of course that would be too much to ask from Rockstar or the tiny team at Grove Street Games.
Yeah, and the fact that you make the peds and Claude talk (well they don't actually talk, but you make it look like they do) is very entertaining! The music is also very cool, I like it ^^
Haha, yeah. I thought it would be a nice addition to make the video feel more dynamic and alive. Just give the characters some one liners from time to time.
Thank you! Please keep reporting the state of this game. If it is ever properly patched I would very much like to buy it but as long as huge portions of the game are much worse than the original, I will not pay for this.
@@arthurmorgan2906 I can't imagine any PS2 mods will improve graphics on an actual PS2 as much as I'd like to see. I don't know if there's something rotten in the working conditions for the people who do all the work for the corporation that currently owns rockstar or what the work environment is like there but that's for the HR department and the people working there to sort out. I'm a consumer and if they make a worthwhile product I will buy it. If you have a free modded console version that plays exactly like the PS2 version but with the driving camera view used in the new one and maybe a weapon wheel and radio wheel plus graphics at least on the level you would expect on xbox 360 then I'm interested but my understanding is that modded versions of the original that have improved graphics are on pc and I'm not a pc gamer. My big problem with def. ed. is they built it on the broken mobile ports that were loathed when they were first released instead of building it on the PS2 version with proper controls and unbroken game mechanics.
@@crow_g1639 The patch work is half complete last I've seen. If you dispute this then please post a link to a video demonstrating the patched flame animation when the Hydra jet catches fire (the new animation is bad for a super nintendo game), corrected gym animations and controls, corrected bicycle controls and well, patches for everything this video claims is still wrong with the game. I'll believe it when I see it.
For real, I hope they don’t remaster Bully or Manhunt now, cos that means future versions will always be based on whatever garbage they put out with the “definitive remaster”
@@TheBreakingBenny Bully: Scholarship Edition was fantastic on the Wii but iffy on the Xbox 360 & awful on Windows PC & I haven't played the Anniversary Edition on mobile yet but I've heard that it's great & it was even developed by Grove Street Games.
Oh yeah, the famous Irish pasta! How could anyone forget about it, GSG? These showcases of some details that I haven't seen before are wonderful, and I'm excited for the 'lack of improvements' part three! Such a tragic, wasted opportunity.
It's obvious that they should've worked on ONE remaster at a time, first GTA 3 and _then_ the others. Heck, I've been told GSG didn't use the Xbox/Mobile models as a base.
“Irish mozzarella” is a perfect two word summary for this remaster. So much was lost in translation, so many textures downgraded, failures in rendering, lack of care for the final product, it’s no wonder it looks like something completely different from the real thing!
I cant believe this is part 2! Really great work. I was pretty disappointed before but now I'm pretty livid. I did not purchase this game or have gone back to my RDO or GTAO profiles even though I have hundreds of hours poured into them
I sure hope that Rockstar is watching these kind of videos on RU-vid... all of these issues need to be addressed. All of them. Every last one. They said that they're going to fix the game until it "meets the quality that it should be," so hopefully they will stay true to their word. There are literally no excuses.
I don't think Rockstar is watching these videos. But I'm pretty sure Rockstar only cares about money... If you wanna to know, Rockstar is hungry of money and I'm pretty sure is still milking on GTA Online... 🙄🙄🙄 I prefer to buy the new Saints Row of the 2022. I'm sure the new Saints Row will beat GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition... Saints Row is way better than GTA for my opinion... Nope Rockstar, I never give you my money for your game. I prefer to give my money to Deep Silver. Even if Saints Row is too expensive than GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, but I'm sure it worth buying...
1:21 I recall having this same issue in the original version for some reason when modding the games scripts. I think there was a rendering issue that had a fix in the script that they accidentally deleted.
What an absolute joke of a game that isnt even funny. Again GSG had very little time to polish this game but its also R* fault for not helping out. Great video.
Yeah gsg doing diversity hiring instead hiring people with actual talent if only they could stop being woke asf and hired talented people we could actually get decent product
This is the third time wardrobe studios has fucked up. First it was the Xbox 360 remaster than the mobile ports and now this! By the way this is just a remaster of the shady broken mobile parts it's not even a remaster of the original fucking games!!!!!!! And they have the nerve to call themselves Grove Street games! Fuck that they are still war drum studios to me!!!
@Gaming ZONE GAZO Meh even if they "only" had 8 developers working on this they still screwed up an rather easy task. This wasn't an all round project these "trilogy" games are mobile ports that have been editted a little bit. Hardly any work done to them. What they should've done is grabbed the original and probably add in a lot more cut scenes as most missions in gta 3 / lcs are phone tasks as missions. They could've added on so much more content on the already existing content from the original making the game so much more open and new activities to do. Instead they focused on making the game graphically enhanced ruining the original vibe gta 3 had with it and made it a simpsons open world explorer where you can shoot people.
The more i see of the definitive edition the more i respect the original game. I love gta 3 it's not that beloved as vice city and san andreas but i loved how dark and gritty the environment was in 3. Litter everywhere, almost all the gangs are hostile at the end of the game, a sense of mystery in the hills behind shoreside vale. Just wish you were able to drive up to the cedar ridge observatory without falling through "blue hell"
I have been playing this version for a couple of weeks and I haven't noticed any of this observations. I think it is somethin sad to see some sort of "downgrade" on this version, but to be honest it does not affect the gameplay at all. Really good video tho!
I can and I will. But not straight away. After this video, I'm releasing Part 3 of GTA III comparison (the final part) and then I think I'll make a few completely different videos before I go back to shitting on The Definitive Edition. But then I'll cover Vice City and then later San Andreas. You just gotta be patient with me because I'm a perfectionist and I always take a lot of time when making videos. I'm also trying to have a variety channel so I do a lot of different types of videos. I wouldn't want to become a comparison channel that uploads only stuff like this and nothing else. Remember to subscribe and hit the bell to be notified when I upload more videos!
I am so glad I didn't waste my money on this mess of a game. Made that mistake once before wth ANTHEM and almost did it again wth cyberpunk.looks like I finally learnt from my mistakes.(took long enuff)😁
man, its crazy that ppl think fancy lighting and textures so smooth it looks like plastic makes it look pretty all of the sudden. when even the fancy lighting isnt their doing, they probably just slapped it into the unreal engine and let it do the rest of the work. another thing to note is they didnt even change the original herky-jerky looking animations.
The road markings not being aligned and the doors on some cars not being attached at the hinges are by far the most appalling issues showcased here. How could the developers not notice those issues during development?
This part 8:22 to 8:25 really really got me 😆😅🤣 And also from 8:26 to 8:29 😆😅😜🤪 And also that car part from 09:01 to 09:19 with also the part of helicopter 09:27
For the next part mention how primitive the water effects are and how bright it looks in all the DE games. Also, if you do a SA DE comparison, please do point out the botched art direction and atmosphere. Each city in og SA had different sunrises and sunsets, but in SA DE the sky looks the same everywhere
@@CinematicSeriesGaming yeah I just watched part 1, my bad. Although the effects should be mentioned. Waters look pretty fake, without any distortion effects for objects underwater and a very ugly seafoam surrounding objects on the surface
Oh, one more suggestion. In VC DE take a look at the glass doors at the entrance of Gonzalez's house and the entrances of the Mall lmao. Also you can notice many errors with the parallax interiors, apart from those you mentioned. You can see that the "rooms" inside look big from one angle and suddenly there's a wall when you view them at a different angle
3:16 , i think they change the name to momma's restaurant is because in mission "cipriani chauffeur" joey said " take him to momma's restaurant in saint mark alright"
A store called "Irish mozzarella" in a district that is supposed to be little italy is pretty funny though, I thought it was the typical rockstar humour. And the restaurant being called momma's restaurant is fine too since that's how joey calls it in the mission where you drive tony around and even the game's manual does so, perhaps in the beta it was called cipriani's restaurant, then they changed it to momma's restaurant but forgot to change the texture, there were no patches back then. When they made the remaster they took advantage to finally fix it. But I agree with everything else, those issues suck
I had fun playing this one and Vice City, I played it when it was out for like 2 months and I can’t lie I had fun, but I see where this video is coming from🤷♂️
