Damn , in 2012 after update , I played GTAIV all the time over 1k hour , last year in June I installed , played few missions and I unnistalled , compare to GTAV , is so so borring , I really regret that I play it again , because now I cant stand that game :(
If anyone's wondering it's because playing at 4K takes the load off of the CPU and that's where the game's problems come from in terms of Performance, there is a mod that changes the games' API to Vulkan which gives you much better results, i'd recommend that to the people actually wanting some sort of fix but it's not easy as pie.
except this unoptimized classic slapped the shit out of that very certain futuristic open world game that we're supposed to made GTA series looked like a high-schooler presentation project
i remember back then gta 4 was one of the first games where you would see a massive difference between a dual core and a quad core cpu. on my amd x2 6000+ the game was barely playable with constant frame drops and texture loading issues. then when i upgraded to a phenom II x4 955 later, the game ran so much smoother with way less glitches.
@@MarkoVuckovic32 Mainly it was created to make games run on linux, but it's also amazing thing for GTA IV on windows. When without mods I get 60+ fps average, with DXVK I get 70+ with graphics mods! This is huge difference!
Did I hear that correctly? You're gonna continue to benchmark GTA IV on new GPUs? You are doing god's work, my friend. This video had me smiling from ear to ear the whole way through, keep it up.
I’m going to have to try this. GTA 4 runs awful on my 6800xt, I barely made it past killing Ivan before I got fed up with the inconsistent framerate and stuttering 🤧
Its funny the map design was this brilliant over ten years ago and they fitted that into a Ps3 but gta5 comes around with its pretty pathetic skyline and size in general and much worse liquid physics and still doesnt run brilliantly on ps4
@@finlaymcdiarmid5832 GTA V runs much better even on PS3 than IV does though tbf. IV on PS3 is shockingly bad. IV even runs at 640p on PS3 upscaled to 720p, that's why it looks so blurry, whereas V is at least native 720p. Rockstar really bit off more than they could chew with the console versions of GTAIV, though the 360 version wasn't too bad.
Could you test out the performance difference running GTA IV on Vulkan with DXVK makes on older cards? It would be interesting to see especially with older flagships at the time of release
I tried it yesterday on my 3070, the performance bump was huge, was hitting 144 cap on some areas even and never dips below 100, which was impossible on dx9. It broke my cinematic mods though, so i had to uninstall everything.
HOLY DAMN! i just tested it and the performance skyrocketed! i was getting a min of 34 fps and a max of 85, now getting a min of 51 and a max of 170 fps. My System Latest Win10, Core i5 6500, GTX 1070 and 16GB DDR4. The only ISSUE i had was that DXVK seems to limit the game available memory to just 512, and it will not allow me to change some graphics setting like High Textures and Night Shadows, but the trade off is WORTH IT.
@@EtaYorius You need to create a DXVK.conf (contents for the file available on DXVK github) and you can modify in the file what amount of VRAM is reported to the game.
I still remember first running GTA IV in Windows Vista, because 7 wasn't out yet. And when the Windows 7 public beta (or whatever it was called) was released, I immediately upgraded my Vista install to it, ran GTA IV again and was amazed at how much better it ran. Didn't run any benchmarks, but yeah, the difference was very much noticeable. Can't remember what GPU I had at the time... could have been Radeon HD 4850. I think the CPU was a Q6600.
@@azraeihalim gta sa runs smoothly on windows 10, gta 3 runs smoothly. You just need right drivers and software to meet requirements. Ex: old games use dx 9 and net framework 3.5, Your win 10 has dx 12 and net fx 4.7 pre Installed. You have to download them manually. Software which won't run are older 16 bit games which is a physical limitation on modern cpu, You have to use emulator like dosbox
Mate, thanks for the great content you always upload. It's all down to earth and reflects reality, unlike those channels with unlimited budgets and sponsorship from manufacturers. Great job!
I'm replaying this right now as it was recently made more compatible with proton/dxvk on Linux, but the performance under Linux feels much more consistent and better overall, I'm running it at 4K and haven't had a drop under 60 in my testing, using a RX 6800 though.
I do feel like its not actually the GPU, but rather the CPU. You should try using the fastest CPU in terms of single core performance as the game uses i think 1 or 2 cores
r9 5950 would bring those 1% lows close to 60 I think, it has good single core perf. and lots of cache L3 so should do crazy good in gta IV with its bad optimisations.
@@pilot554 The cores (and associated cache) divided between the two chiplets on an R9 5950X could still cause a performance regression though, especially on Windows (though the scheduler has drastically improved since 2017). A 5800X could therefore perform better than a 5950X in some games.
Unless I’m wrong, GTA IV still runs on DX10, not DX11, right? Seeing a few comments mention DXVK (which I assume is a sort of Vulkan emulation on DirectX code, haven’t yet looked it up myself). I too would like to see performance with that backend.
GTA 4 is such an anomaly. I could max this out at 1080p on the rig I had 7 years ago (gtx 770, 4670k, 8 gigs dedotated wam) and get a solid 85 frames per second. Fast forward 5 years to me getting nostalgic and firing up the game to see how it runs on the exact same system now with a 1070 and lo and behold: stuttery mess with about 30 fps once I stepped outside.
@@AK-tf3fc I originally wanted 3100 but it was out of stock at the time and was in a bit of need for a new rig. Currently I am waiting for 3600 prices to go down as I later realised BeamNG Drive far more cpu intensive than expected. 😅
@@ASRLawman I am just glad I invested a bit more on ryzen 3500(I bought it for 12,999 only) last year. It was a huge jump for me since I was using 11 year old pentium d before.
1:33 i got confused there when you were lowering view distance, and saw that you did that to go faster to 100 and then I was like: this is the most intelligent person I've ever met, or I'm the dumbest that's ever been.
You such try GTA IV running the Vulkan API. A lot of people report massive performance improvements and stability and all it takes are a few tweaks here and there!
Running Gta 4 with dxvk at 3200*1800 downscaled to 1080p (amd vsr) almost maxed settings (90 fps lock with rtss), with fusion fix and few other mods. The game looks great and I face no performance issues
Damn, i have a question, when u install a very ultra realistic mod, Gta IV runs better? i mean, in 1440p ultra with mods for graphics, it does run better? Good video brother.
Gave this game a go on my i7 5820, gtx 1650 super, 32 gig ram and with max settings at 1080p ran pretty good. I disagree with it being such a great game though but probably just where the original trilogy holds a soft place for me. I really missed all the neat mini games GTA SA brought. I could play San Andreas forever just with the fun mini games, RPG Lite features, etc.
I honestly did not know this game coudl go this high. It honestly looks incredible when you're able to take the leash off and take it out of "looks like it belongs on the Playstation 1" mode.
I'd like to see if u have low end 2gb and 4gb gpu if having ur games on nvme drive reduce lag vs having on slow sata hdd that can only reach 120mbps you know those random lag spikes u get while driving fast in gta v at ultra detail
That has nothing to do with HDD/SSD Speed for sure. It's just some engine bottleneck. When this game was made it ran on a HDD of the 360 and PS3. Therefor it is made to intelligently stream data, and thus won't show any improvements with increased drive speed.
I'm actually quite curious as to how SSD vs HDD really makes a difference in games, cause I constantly see people say it doesn't make a difference in games, but I can say that personally I noticed a difference in Overwatch specifically where the game stuttered on the HDD at random intervals where just moving it to the SSD caused all stuttering to disappear. It could be that I had a bad drive, but it hasn't had any issues since then so I can't confidently come to a conclusion.
How you feel about v-sync? I have GTX 1660, I5-9400F and 16Gb ram. In most games I lock fps to 60 because my TV is 60 Hz. V-sync really limits frame drops in my case. Works almost in every game with 1080p and high settings. Cyberpunk 2077 is too much for my pc.
Out of curiosity did you update to the latest driver? As before I did with my 6700xt a lot of older direct x 11 and some direct x 9 games were tanking in performance and after the update it was night and day much higher fps.
my brother has this and is running it on a 1080p 144hz monitor. ppl were thelling him to get a 1440p monitor and in the end he went with 1080p . i think it looks great, and the couple i played was smooth
You should test it with DXVK (Translation to Vulkan). Download DXVK put d3d9 . dll from dxvk-{version}\x32 subfolder to GTA IV folder. DXVK may at first be laggy as it builds shader cache, it is normal - the more you play the smoother it will become e.g. do several missions or run built-in benchmark at least 3 times and you will see. Im using GTA IV and R9 390 with DXVK, no more stutters and got more FPS. Let’s go bowling!
amd cards seem to struggle with older APIs such as dx9 and dx11, with huge gaps in performance relative to nvidia cards, doesn't get discussed all that much as reviewers and tech channels usuallyh focus on the latest and greatest games.
GTA IV:"Oh, you're approaching me. Instead of running away, you're coming right to me? Even though your grandfather, Vega 56 failed to run me at a stable framerate like a gpu scrambling to aquire power from a sub par power supply on a hot summer's day. RX 6700 XT: "I can't run the crap out of you without getting closer." GTA IV: "Oh ho! Then come as close as you like!"
Those sliders of gta 4 is mostly Cpu Hogs , since its programed for 4 cores and in this case the i5 10400 helps a lot but the game cant fully utilize the rx 6700 xt since its cpu bound - Most likely Gta 4 's programming has if this then that physics/collision(needed for falling objects and car indentations ect) logic baked in and when Increasing the view distance more objects in game is locked on a collision query making frames drop since the game thread is being utilized more , same with detail distance and vehicle density. Try testing with a ryzen 5 5600x and lowering those sliders and it will utilize more of the Graphics card ...tho it will still be cpu bound in the end
Also games that are cpu bound usually has more stutter than gpu bound games in this case 4k will be a better option to play at... especially if you have a older card like a gtx 1070/ 1080 Game logic takes frametime off the game thread and events in game that has more happening than usual will have frametime spikes introducing stutter
Just one word to fix GTAIV -> DXVK. Just run the in-game benchmark multiple times after installing it to generate the shader cache and the game will run much much better
Try running it in Vulkan/DXVK the linux tech works wonders even on windows, fixing Saints Row 2's terrible performance alongside GOTR mod and eliminates stutters in Fallout New Vegas. (After it caches the shaders)
Had a good 1440p ultra experience, though I didn't put all sliders all the way up (traffic at 100, hell no) and capped it at 70hz. Except for the final mission, because climbing back into the heli was impossible. Had to cap it at 30.
I'm running GTA IV on a much less powerful card (MSI GTX 1660 Super Ventus XS OC) and vanilla GTA IV on high makes it struggle, but thank god mods exist.
Even with all flaws GTA4 remains the most interesting and technically advanced GTA part for me Physics of cars is great, AI of cops is cool, bodies react to the shots and etc GTA5 became quantity over quality which is shame
People hate Cyberpunk for bugs glitches and bad FPS at least they are slowly fixing it. Rockstar didnt even bother fixing optimization issues with GTA IV.
It seems like this game is both unoptimized for both GPU and CPU. Seems like only people with a 3090 and AMD Threadripper could possibly get a smooth 60fps experience with no dips
When i played gta iv back in the day it was 80fps smooth but every time I turn Right it drops to 0 and back up to 80 but only when I turn right for some reason
hey guys so I didn't even change anything on my system but yesterday I booted up my PC and it just doesn't go into windows. like it gets to the login screen and then says "welcome" for about 20 seconds and then black screens. I've booted into safe mode a few times, but each time, nothing loads and if I click on anything it just says "microsoft windows isn't responding". Does anyone know a fix? I can't seem to find anything online and I really don't wanna delete everything off my system again (because yes I had to on april 1st because for some reason my audio just stopped working and I couldn't download updates). edit: I do wanna add that I do suspect it is my shitty ADATA SU635(?) SSD, which I was going to switch to my samsung nvme m.2 SSD as my boot drive, but as I wanted to do so, I booted up my PC and it didn't work so... yeah.
I remember playing this on ps3 and I was like woow graphics are awesome, played the game on my gtx 1070 and then went back after a few years on ps3 and I was like wooow this looks bad
Is there any reason to test gta 4 at default settings on rx6700xt? Ultra settings make sense, but default? LoL, it's like using tank for everyday driving
I play this at 60fps (capped) with a FreeSync enabled display and it's perfect for me like that. It's not even that demanding on the GPU. The issue is the poorly optimised game engine which is just kind of broken. It just doesn't run well. You can use a more powerful CPU and that will help, but only because you are brute forcing it.
When I used to have fx 6300 and rx 570, I was playing it in 4k too 😅 Fx 6300 couldn't keep up, in 1080p was about 35-45 fps. In 4k? 35-45fps 😁 Gpu usage jumped from 40-50% to about 95-100% instantly.
