As between construction and abandonment was a relatively short number of years, they must have been aware of the issues almost from the very beginning of operations. Makes me wonder if a "standard" box drain was built and almost immediately they realized it was too small leading to massive ponding on the upside, but did not want to go back and correct it. They may have been rightly concerned about too much vibration causing a liquefaction of the RofW and washout/landslide.

That could very well have been the case. In one source that I read CNR initially had the Kashabowie Sub and the Graham Sub sharing trackage up to this area and then splitting. The decision was eventually made to split the lines several miles further west. Now I can't say the grade in this area was the sole deciding factor, as it maybe have been more feasible to construct a bridge across the river at that point (Conmee Junction) than in this area.
