Yay Russell!! I’m so glad that’s done and behind you!! I remember when I had my Shitzuh Ollie neutered I was so scared and worried and he was about 6 years old. I had just never thought about getting him done before then and then my vet start telling me all the bad things that could happen if I didn’t like different cancers and stuff and that scared me worse so I did it! I actually cancelled the first time 🤣 and i had to really pray hard about it and then I was able to get it done! I think it was harder on me than it was Ollie. I love the way you talk to your animals just like I do just like they’re human because they are very smart and they can and do understand what we are saying or I believe the can and they act like it..or most of the time 🤣 I am glad it’s behind him Kevin and Rachel and he did good!! If you can keep him out of the water poor guy that’s asking a lot of a hard worker when it’s 100 plus degrees out!! Hope everything else is going good. Farm looks great and the kids are growing up and busy! Busy is good at that age! Kevin you maybe should have put him in a stall for a few days with a cone. I know that see,pms cruel for a LGD but if those stitches dissolve too early or he gets a infection you are really going to have issues.

It is important to keep the incision dry to prevent infection (a lot of bacteria in the water) and preventing the stitches from dissolving too quickly. He should be confined for 10-14 days, no jumping or rough play so the stitches stay in place. Incision should be checked twice a day. If redness around the area and swelling has changed call the vet.

My niece was a vet tech and she said the reason they want to make sure he doesn't get in the water is because they want to prevent infection. Bacteria love warm moist environment's, so just keep an eye on him and his privates for a few days to make sure he doesn't develop any. Rachel, you look beautiful. I got so scared every time I got one of my animals spayed or neutered , I could not wait to pick them up it was such a relief so stressful for me. I guess I always think the worse. 😊

you made the right decision. If you want to know why go ask the shelters around you about how many livestock guardian dogs are brought in. And end up euthanized. So you take excellent care of your animals and quit feeling bad about doing the right thing. And honestly Russell has no idea that he was meant to have puppies. They can't know what they have never had. So he is going to be just fine.

You should put him in the barn outer area where he grew up. Keep him in there where he can't get into the pond or water tank.

Kevin, it's not a horrible thing to get Russell neutered. It's the responsibility of you as a guardian-steward of your animals, to prevent accidental breeding of Kora and Russell. And with Leske being the alfa male things could end tragically for Russell. He won't even know the difference. ❤

Kevin you feel worse about neutering Russell then he does. Please keep him out of water especially the puddles and ponds. A wet incision is the best area for bacteria to grow in. My suggestion is either put Russell in with the donkeys for 5 to seven days or in the barn side gated area. That way he has no access to water except his water bowl. If it is too hot then put up a misting hose about five or six feet up on the barn outside wall and lightly let it mist him, for short periods of time. There are three layers of stitches because that is the anatomy of a male dog. Leave it at that. Anyways prayers for Russell to stay healthy during his healing and Peace of mind to you for knowing you did the best for Russell. He is less prone to specific cancers in his future. ✌🙏💖🕯

The reason why you can’t get your dog wet after having a surgical procedure is because it can lead to infections at the surgical site or it can make the incisions dissolve quickly, and the top layer is surgical glue, and it can open up, which would be very bad I hope I explain that good

The stitches they use are water soluble. That is why they don't want then to get wet. Keep a close eye on his incisions watch8ng for infection and that it closes properly

Kevin….the cold water on his incision feels good to him. Please keep a watch on the sutures so there is not an infection. If you see red in the area you can apply Neosporin very sparingly.
