@@choonbox I got 4/6 Irish (the strong Irish accent that Irish people have when they speak English), Filipino (due to the vast amount of Romance vocabulary), Tamil (those weird "t"s, but it didn't sound Indo-European, so must be Dravidian), and Danish (sounded like German but also like Chinese, so obviously Danish; although I did initially think that it was something like Swiss German, which also sounds extremely weird). For Zulu, I was confident it was Xhosa, as it was the only click language that I knew of before now. And for Guarani, that sounded completely alien to me, and it might as well have been martian lol (if it wasn't for that "importante"). I was figuring it might be native to the Americas because of that Spanish-sounding "importante", but that was the only clue that I managed to derive from it.

Mee, too. I usually get perfect or near perfect scores in language recognition games so I consider myself very good at this but this guy is something else. I got 4/6 (Tagalog, Tamil, Zulu, Danish). I have a funny story about the 6th one, too. I had seen a few videos where Scandinavian speakers claimed that they recognized Danish because it sounded like someone was speaking with a potato in their mouth. That sounded like such an odd thing to say, but as I listened to the 6th language, I thought "I know it's Scandinavian, but it sounds really odd, like they swallowed a sock or something....must be Danish."

Great episode Norbert! Raphael seems like such a interesting guy to talk to. I had medium cup of satisfaction: Tagalog, Tamil, guarani, Irish and Danish. Tagalog: I had coworkers trying to teach me this. (My first thought was Bengali) Tamil: I listen to two coworkers speak (Matti and Siva) this beautiful language on break time everyday. Guarani: couple days ago I watched a video from Langfocus about this language. Irish: It sounded Gealic and guessed Irish. I also went to school with an Irish man in brazil so it sounded vaguely familiar Danish: It sounded nordic to me then i remembered all the potato in mouth while talking memes for the danish people and got it right Pretty much the best episode for me:)

I guessed Zulu / Xhosa upon first try. I had 30 years of exposure to it when I lived in that country. The map really helped, as Zulu is in the province of Natal. Zulu and Xhosa are neighbours, with Xhosa "taking" the Eastern Cape (the "next" province along the coast from Natal). I may be wrong, but I believe that Xhosa has a higher click frequency.

My guesses: 1: Definitely from Phlippines, I guessed Tagalog. CORRECT 2: Initially had no idea and thought Amharic. Raphael's comments and the second listen led me to Southern India, so I guessed Tamil. Technically CORRECT, though I probably would have gotten it wrong without a clue. 3: Heavy Spanish influence, given all the nasals I guessed Guarani. CORRECT. 4: Definitely Celtic, given the heavy English-speaker accent it's probably Irish, or it could be Manx. CORRECT. 5: Click consonants, definitely Zulu or Xhosa. I guessed Zulu. *After the map reveal, definitely Zulu, Xhosa is further South. CORRECT. 6: Very Germanic, but the weird sounds are definitely Danish lol. CORRECT. So based on my own raw knowledge 5/6, technically 6/6. My knowledge of Indian subcontinent languages is pretty shaky. I probably would have used a script or map clue to get Tamil if it were me in the game.

My guesses on one listen--1:56 1. I'll guess Tagalog 4:23 Hindi? I cannot think of the names of other languages from India region at the moment. 7:07 An indigenous language from Central America? 10:33 Gaeilge, cinnte! Is breá liom an teanga. 13:14 I'll guess Bantu simply because I believe that it's from africa and that is a large language family. It's not Berber which are the only African languages that I have heard much of. 17:42 A dialect of German, I'd guess! Maybe Austrian or Swiss though I have no idea which.

Got 3 right (not bad). 1. Tagalog was easy to figure out due to the loan words and accent! 2. Tamil, that one threw me off. I thought it was like Farsi or something. 3. Guarani was guessable thanks to the fact and loan words 4. Regarding Irish, I can’t believe I got that one wrong. I should’ve guessed it because of that person mentioning “Saoirse”, but went for Scottish Gaelic as parts of that audio sounded rather Germanic, and I knew that Scotland is close to the Faroe Islands, so I went with that 5. With Zulu, the map saved me as I was going to guess the wrong language (Xhosa) because of the click sounds 6. With this one…..I guessed Luxembourgish as it sounded much more German, but I knew it wasn’t German. Turns out it was Danish…(Danish really is a mind of its own)

My guesses: 1) Spanish influence! Definitely language of Philippines... can't really tell the dialects apart, so guessed Tagalog. 2) Sounds a lot like Korean... but definitely not. Kind of sounds more like a Dravidian language. I'm guessing Tamil. 3) Spanish influence! Vowels sound different to spanish, hint of South East asian sound at the end. Not really sure. After lifeline was used, it was clear that it was Guarani. 4) Irish! That was my first thought. Then I thought about the different Goidelic languages... it didn't sound like Scottish Gaelic to me... I think Scottish Gaelic has more "sh" sounds in it. The speaker also had more of an Irish sing-song to their speaking. I also figured that statistically speaking, it probably wasn't Manx, given how few speakers there are of it. 5) Clicks! but it doesn't sound Khoisan. Sounds tonal, and a lot of open vowels... must be Bantu. Only Bantu languages with clicks I can think of are Zulu and Xhosa. I can't tell the difference between the two languages, but for some reason I feel like it is more Zulu. After the map lifeline, I felt stronger that it must been Zulu. 6) Danish. It can't possibly be any other language.

So, not even close. third one was rather easy, some Spanish and the last word sounded like 'guarana' to me, so: guaraní! I also studied that via Duolingo for a few hours. the fourth one sounded like some British guy pronounced it and at the same time it was very different from English; so I guessed Welsh. Alas! the last one was either Swedish, Norwegian or Danish, but I couldn't understand even one word, so no Swedish, a pity I heard the answer already before I could guess... dead language reconstruction is an extremely difficult discipline that has a lot more to do with code decryption, that is a completely different skill from this (which is essentially a bunch of notions about phonemics). being able to recognize a language that is already known even you don't speak it is one thing, being able to reconstruct the grammar of one no one knows is another one.

The second was clearly something from the Indian subcontinent (retroflex consonants!), and it sounded Dravidian, but it didn't sound like Malayalam (which in my ears sounds like a machinegun of syllables), and some sounds seemed a bit strange for Kannada, and the list of south Indian languages I know the name of was getting shorter. @ThatBernie
@ThatBernie 3 года назад
That’s because the speaker was almost certainly an L2 speaker whose native language is (Hiberno-)English. The Irish government forces everyone to learn Irish in school, but the problem is that there aren’t enough native Irish speakers to employ as language teachers across the entire country, and so proficient (or sometimes just semi-proficient) L2 speakers are hired to teach the language in school, which has resulted in a variety of Irish that has extensive English influence in its phonology and grammar. If you listen to an actual native speaker from one of the Gaeltacht regions you will find it sounds much more “exotic.”
