Thanks for the video! I know it’s 3 years old but still relevant. I have the same stove and had the air flow issue as well. I removed the seal and can now control the stove with dampers and flue adjustments. It would only run for me with seal if I had the door cracked. Removing the seal allows me to make the stove much more efficient. Looking into the baffle and fire brick
good man! I just fired my stove up in my little polish lavvu in the backyard and noticed the issue where the flames are only happening at the back of the stove and going right up the pipe! I'll try this.
Hey David, good video and good information. With the baffle in place I am guessing that the stove temperature in the firebox has increased thus the reason for the baffle. Do you know if the baffle has decreased the stove pipe temperatures? If so, any idea on how hot the stove pipe gets now with the modification of the baffle?
Sorry for the late reply,... I have not taken any temps BUT I have seen several video's where the top of the stove close to the pipe & the first 6 inches of pipe is white from very high temps & you can see that if the entrance to the pipe & the beginning of the pipe got so hot then you are losing a lot of heat. Take a look inside yours when it's burning & you will see flames rushing up the pipe,... As I said, I saw orange flashes at the top of my 6 inch flue so I know it was losing a lot of heat & it was more of a Rocket Stove than a wood stove. I do have a BBQ grill thermometer that goes to about 600 f & I plan to put it in the hole where the Damper goes so I might take a video of that lol. I am really happy with the difference that the Baffle made :)
Here's the link but currently sold out,... I would take a piece to a Muffler shop where they can cut the pipe & flare one end,... The stove is made in China which is Metric sizing might be tricky but a muffler man may be able to do it :) www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/guide-gear-extra-outdoor-stove-pipe-connections-2-pc?a=2170764
David it's been some time now since this video came out.....are you still using this stove and if so would you let me know what your burn times are with the mods you made. I am looking into one of these but I don't see anything on burn times per load of good dry wood! Thx in advance for the reply.
@@davehimlin2374 I don't use fire brick anymore,... Just a 6 inch piece as a baffle,... The only panel that I am not thrilled about warping is the top panel but that only happened when I put a cast iron pan on it to cook,... I think one or two pieces of 90 degree right angle steel welded on the inside in a v shape may have prevented this but it's not that big of a deal at the moment. The sides & bottom are not warped.
how do you solve the problem with creasote leaking down the pipes , I installed mine in small cabin and noticed it leaked what I first thought was water , next day used propane stove instead of woodstove, when cabin reached bout 60 i saw again water run down the pipes even though stove hadnt been lit, wiped the pipe and realized it was creasote , now took the whole thing apart cleaned and trying to figure out what will fix it , thanks for any help
To be honest, I have had that issue but I only get creosote when I burn crappy timber,... When I burn old pallets or crappy timber I get build up which has run down the pipes but if I burn a good, dry hard wood then it burns very clean :)
Oh, I forgot to mention that you could take a piece of pipe to a metal shop or Muffler shop to price a one piece flue from exhaust pipe,... If the exhaust pipe is slightly smaller in diameter then they can spread one end to fit the stove.
@@davidyummus6259 its odd, I have truly dead dry bark off lumber , seasoned two years under cover , like I said I only did a pre burn outside to get paint burned , then installed in the cabin , both times was wood that coulnt be any dryer , Im now thinking of heat caulking the entire thing together , I think the design would have been much better had they ran the pipes opposite of what they are , least that way eveything would stay in the pipe and not leaking down the outside onto the stove
I witnessed that after first and second burn I think but I've ran it in a megahorn tipi tent that is white and I've not seen any drippings. Been burning cherry recently though. And I stopped burning 2x4 pieces in it.
Most places will tell you that a seal helps efficiency. You think not having one helps it burn better? I am new to tent stoves. I too have this stove and my seal has ripped after three uses. I was going to replace it.
I replaced mine in the beginning but I found it wanting more air to burn well,... It depends on the wood, your altitude & the flue being open & available to a cross breeze,... I'm in Pennsylvania & found mine breathes better without the seal because it can draw more air through the gap in the door :) Try it without before you replace it ;)
Did your stove not come with a damper? I am ordering the same stove from Sportsmans guide, and they have dampers now. When used properly, they can stop the rocket-stove effect...
It did but I'm not a fan of Dampers,... They are prone to clogging with creosote & blocking the flue,... A Baffle also doesn't restrict air flow, it allows air & smoke to flow but keeps more heat in the box,... Try yours & see how it goes :)
The door needs to be closed to create a draft up the flue pipe but these do struggle to get enough air & that's why I removed the door seal, to give it more air.
@John Gohde I remove the whole door seal for more air intake & it works much better. It's not a "bad design", it's a $120 slap together Chinese "outdoor" stove, I knew exactly what I was buying.
@John Gohde Beijing China is about 150 feet above sea level. My back yard, almost 1200 feet above sea level. Maybe they work perfectly with an imperfect door seal in Beijing ;)
@John Gohde LMAO ! Dude, do you own or use one of these stoves ? PLEASE tell me that you own one :) PLEASE tell me that you are not reviewing a cheap outdoor tent stove by watching someone else's video which you call a bad review ;) PLEASE tell me that you can see that,... PLEASE.
Tack welded some "C" channel steel to the flange that bolts in,... See the video here :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nK47hVm9Ba0.html
The channel is 6 inches long & I put some washers between the brick & the channel & clamped it all together,... Got it squared up & had it welded at my local muffler shop. The washers are to leave some room so the brick isn't stuck or too tight when I removed the clamps :)
