With so many epic and awesome movies at our disposal, how could we ever lament not having more? Well, that's what we explore in our new series, WTF Happened to this (Unmade) Movie, where we take a look at films that got deep into the planning, pre-production and sometimes actual production, only to never see the light of day. What happened? What went wrong? Are we better or worse off without it?
In this episode, we take a look back at the doomed, big-budget, R-rated AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS adaptation from director Guillermo del Toro (PAN'S LABYRINTH), producer James Cameron (ALIENS), and star Tom Cruise (THE MUMMY), based on H.P. Lovecraft's famous novella! In fact, it came really close to being made many times, and we chronicle the ill-fated journey of this amazing-sounding film, as well as what it might've looked like! Hope you enjoy!

My thoughts exactly because adapting it into one feature length film, even if making it close to 3 hours, will make the story feel rushed and won't be as good. However I don't know about starring Tom Cruise and having Cthulhu chasing the characters ( even as awesome as that sounds) near the end instead of the shoggoths. Plus his direction of the story isn't really the way I hoped for an adaptation. I don't doubt Guillermo's ability as a filmmaker because I'm confident he can pull it off, but that is just my opinion. P.S. I would like to see Del Toro do The Call of Cthulhu because I always want to see it made into a movie.

Like interview with a vampire - Anne rice hated him casted as Lestat and talked shit about him the whole time they filmed. Far be it from me to not allow that people can learn and change. It was a very good thing the plug was pulled on Del Toro's original AMOM vision. It was more horrifying than the thing Danforth saw beyond the mountains. I hope this eventually gets made, with ALL the same talent, same story, and same R-rating. If they change things, then they will likely screw it all up. This whole concept seems incredibly good. And ONLY Del-Toro can pull off Lovecraft...Nobody else will be able to.

This, but possibly replacing Tom Cruise with a more relevant actor to date. Or not, Cruise is still pretty good.

It's a shame. If ANYONE can successfully bring Lovecraft to the screen, it's Guillermo del Toro.

The Thing was an adaptation of much of At the Mountains of Madness.
