It's so fun to see someone who knows stuff about music genuinely react to a track like this, and go back a couple of times on certain very technical parts. 🤩
the band is comprised of those 3 members you see in the video, and yes, they're an instrumental only band. Tosin Abasi is the bassist, Matt Garstka is the drummer and Javier Reyes is the guitarist
You've got to watch them live. It's amazing how 2, 8 string guitar players, and a maniacal drummer, can make the band sound like they have more members than just the three! Cheers.
This is the kind of reaction/review I am expecting. There's alot of reaction videos of AAL song from other musicians that didn't appreciate such a complex and best part of their songs.
Glad you enjoyed it! A couple from each album I enjoy are Tempting Time & Cafo, An Infinite Regression & Earth Departure, Kascade & Tooth and Claw, Inner Assassins & The Brain Dance, Monomyth & Gordian Naught. There many more really good ones though. I think their latest album, Parrhesia, is their best & full of good tracks.
Animals as leaders play 8 string guitars in the studio and live. Animals As leaders do not play a bass guitar live. The 8 string guitar and the use of the Axe FX effects system eliminates the need for a bass guitar. The bottom two strings on the guitar ends up being used for bass. Tosin Abasi is known for slapping the guitar just like a bass player does. That slapping technique makes unusual times when combined with the eight string guitar and AX FX. Tim Henson of Polyphia learned the slap technique from Tosin. Both bands are incredible
@@phishfan I am of the same mind, sir. I was fortunate enough to see them twice on the "Pleasant Shade of Grey" Tour. I'm in the South and feel lucky to have seen them down here a handful of times. I wished they were able to do wider ranging shows.
Great commentary. They are my favorite band. No one has reacted to Soraya off their first album on youtube I believe and its such a good song with a majestic guitar solo
It is amazing that you begin with their newest material, i would have to recommend their Dunlop Sessions playthrough which includes some inspiring words from all three. Also, the brain dance is wonderful and includes an intermission that is not on the album version. Thanks for checking them out and also the name of this channel is really cool.
Great reaction, seeing these three guys do it live is epic. You might want to check out Modern Day Babylon (more Djent, the bassist is excellent) and also Vildhjarta (heavier Djent in a style they call Thall). Would also love to see you react to Plini.
If youd like some other modern instrumental epics like AAL can i recomnend Myth Of I or Arch Echo both incredible heavy proggy instrumental bands bit under the radar but amazing
Animals As leaders DOES what every one else tries to do and their (other musicians ) attempts are great but still attempts AAL is some Jedi level shenanigans. he's
2:40 it's actually not quite palm muting, he's playing with his thumb and index finger, picking twice with his thumb. It's a newer technique he is adapting to guitar called "thumping"
Listen to the first album and just let it go (pure Tosin). I always return to Animals as leaders, I can't prefer anything else, that's too crazy. I get crazy goose bumps! XD
Haha it's funny you say he is playing a sample on midi guitar because he is not, the man just sounds like an arpeggiator every time he plays any kind of guitar, it's what got me into getting interested in this band
What I was hearing sounded like keyboard, not guitar, so I thought he might be triggering something. Could be some overdubbing in the studio to fill out the mix. Thanks for your reply!
I think there are vocalists out there that could definitely fit the bill in terms of powerful writing in odd time. Chad Kapper from Frontierer is great at it. I still feel like AAL says enough without the need for lyrics, but I'd LOVE to see some Tosin/Javier side projects working with more vocalists
My thoughts: Do something different than the other reviewers. Start w/ their 1st recording and react to the entire thing. Then react to their 2nd recording and so on... They don't have any bad works and no vocals. Their 1st drummer is not who they have now... Also Matt Garstka has numerous drum playthroughs on his YT page... Great reaction, thanks.
Cool idea- thank you! The challenge might be that it would be a VERY long video, not sure many people would be interested in watching something that long. But I will definitely think about it!
Too be honest,in the last 50 years, I have never really given guitars their due. I have always seen them as the sprinkles on the cupcakes of vocal talent. Yeah, I have admired the occaisional guitar solo but if it lasted too long, I would get edgy for the vocals to return.☹️ I was absolutely stunned by this music. It started off pleasant but about 1/3 of the way through moved into euphoric shock. I barely remember anything you said or did but I moved to the original link and listened about 10 times in an attempt to process this incredible "something". I find the visuals very creepy. Four years ago, when I heard Dimash-SOS for the first time, I had a very similar feeling. At that time I really knew nothing about vocals either. I was a Pop and Metal gal, swinging from Abba to Mettalica.😂 I am a new fan in a big way for Animals without leaders. I suggest you react to 1 song at a time to bring in the fan base which must be huge for such incredible music. Then tackle full albums. Many die hard Dimash reactors do Concerts which are divided in 3 parts of a little over an hour each, so albums should work fine. Thank you for introducing me to this incredible experince.🥰🥰🥰Hugs from a Canadian Dear🇨🇦
@@phishfanthey dont have a bassist but they will use bass in their songs from time to time. Tosin kinda coined the 8 string thumping/finger wrapped around the neck so the thumb can hit the heaviest top string. Something like that. Lol
Red miso is not even close to being one of their best songs..the album with physical education is better..you didn’t like physical education as much which idk how..I like PE better than red miso..red miso kinda bores me even though it’s still good the album with Kasacade, the woven web, mind spun, is a better album..all those songs I named are great..there is also tooth and claw, lipoincott, and much more
