The original version of this song is one Layne’s best choruses ever. So powerful and haunting. Dallas Green pushes it to a place I never thought possible. Masterful performance.
@@michaelbolanowski7390 lol oops. I read your comment wrong haha. I thought you were saying someone else had the most original version of the actual original. My bad
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 My husband and I have seen him three times alone, twice in Kansas City, once in Tennessee, and in May we took our 6 and 14 year old to see him in Saint Louis. He is incredible AND anyone who opens for him is ALSO astonishing! ❤❤❤❤❤
Coming from an old Alexisonfire fan, when Dallas put out the first City and Colour album it was the reason I picked up my dad's acoustic for the first time in like two years.
Totally shaped my life around the same time. Especially when his first solo demos came out. Prob the biggest Guitar, voice, and song writing influence!
When I was a teen That album inspired me to write music on acoustic guitar and it still does. I recently went to his solo show and when he played those old songs I couldn’t hold my tears back remembering those good old days . First time I cried at one of his shows lol
I used to love going to his earlier shows in Winnipeg. Everyone was so quiet and respectful. Went to one recently and everyone out is just screaming out lyrics and songs lol.
This is my favorite AIC song ever, so I want to hate any cover of it... but Dallas just seriously made this song come alive without the hard hitting drive of Cantrell’s guitar. Simply incredible and beautiful!
Been listening to C&C since the early 2000s and I love DG but that's a bit of a stretch. Just in Rock music alone there's Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Nicks, Maynard James Keenan, Mike Patton. If you wanna get into other genres there's artists like Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye...
His reaction, from 02:37 until at 02:50, was exactly my reaction as the song progressed. I did not know this guy was, and was terrified when I saw him standing there with only an acoustic guitar. I thought it was going to be a mess... Not sure whether I had ever been more on the wrong about something...
I think the reason why Dallas's cover is so good is because, as you said, he doesn't just sing the lyrics. He feels them. And that emotion creates a real resonance in his performance. For those of us of a certain age, AIC songs bring back strong memories and we react emotionally not just from the music, but the memories of those times and also the loss of those voices that sang those songs. I always loved this song, but hearing Dallas sing it the way he did also made me tear up. It just proves how good of an artist he is.
I’ve loved City and colour for so long. Paradise has got me through so many hard times. Still can’t believe there’s a lot of people who have never heard of them
When it hit you..... I felt that man. I had the exact same experience when I first heard this. Thank you so much for allowing us to experience this with you.
He came in for an interview may years ago at Triple M, and we recorded him doing Nutshell. It's on RU-vid and definitely worth the look. Dude just crushes it every time.
Being a huge Layne Staley/AIC fan, it is so hard to listen to those who cover their music b/c, even the best of artists, just miss the mark. However, Dallas blew me away with his interpretation of the song. He took this gritty, raw, slightly fearful/sad song and made it equally haunting yet so beautifully smooth - and you could still feel the angst that was Layne. Well done! And yes I shed a few tears as well!!!
I named my son Layne because of my love for the man. Layne was telling us flatout in his music that he was on a path to death , you can almost hear the accepted reality of his own demise on the Dirt album, he knows the addiction has him and most likely will destroy him. He was a one in a billion talent and missed sorely by us hardcore Fans.
I've seen City and Colour twice and he is an unworldly talent. Actually the last time I saw him he opened with a full acoustic set opening for Alice in Chains. He said it was a bucket list performance for him since that was his favourite band ever
I love when other musicians appreciate the soul in the music enough to let their emotions show. Goosebumps and tears is a regular for me when I discover new music. Let em flow brother
You are in for such a treat. You are probably going to get taken to some unfamiliar/uncomfortable places emotionally. But my god just let it happen. I'd love to know which album is your favorite.
oh wow! I'm a huge fan of AIC and Rain when I die is one of my most favorite song , but I didn't know City and Colour and I am floored! What a great cover. What a voice! What a tone! Thank you fot this reaction
Dallas Green deserves to be so much more known than he is. Its a shame. I have seen him twice live and its like nothing id ever seen before. I wish he got more recognition
Dallas Green is absolutely amazing. He offers so much musically. I want to be him when I grow up. Dallas = City + Green = Colour. Man is a Canadian treasure.
3:50 - the longest i've ever seen Mike let a clip play : ) Love it - this tune had me stumped as well the first time i heard it. Keep it up Mike. Love from Ireland
@@Guitargate Mike u just made my day! Taking care of my sick father with Parkinson's and went outside for a smoke to listen to this and i can guarantee I'm gonna have a smile on my face all day! Love what u do. I'm playing for 20 years but been a bit disenchanted lately or burnt out and your channel and your energy reminds me every day why I love my guitar! Thanks mate...Maurice
Dallas Green is so good. I became aware of him from a video at the 2018 JUNO awards where he performed Bobcaygeon along with another great Canadian artist Sarah Harmer. A great tribute to the late Gord Downie. So many wonderful Canadian musicians!
Seeing the moment you choked up and got emotional, man... This is the ONLY cover I have ever heard that just absolutely delivers on the emotion that Layne projected. Dallas even made it his own and I think that made it more incredible.
made me cry first time i heard this a few months back, now i am a huge dallas green fan and city and colour fan. he absolutely sings like an angel 😇 😇 love the channel
When I saw this performance on the MoPoP tribute to AIC I immediately went back and listened to Dallas Green’s back catalog. Great stuff. And I’m the biggest AIC fan 😉
I must have had his first album "Sometimes" on repeat for a whole year when it came out. His performance of "Lover Come Back" for Guitar Center a few years back was unreal. Like you said, this dude is the real deal. He has one of the best understandings of dynamics I've seen.
That's so cool! I don't think I'll be able to do that in Canada. I'll be seeing him on december 4th in Montreal. I'll make my own t-shirt for the occasion as always because I love doing that. It's gonna be my first CIty and Colour show ever and it will be solo. I also have all his albums because I needed some music to draw on computer. I discovered him on the album the hurry and the arm because of my rock radio station 97.7 CHOM fm.
I have loved this guys music since I first heard his Myspace Transmissions. He still sounds amazing, and plays so well. Such an enjoyable listen, and it's good to see that I'm not the only one moved to tears by music!
Loved Alexis on Fire and then I stumbled upon City and Colour on a compilation album I had for years and just fell in love with everything about the man. Some of his lyrics have been life rafts to me in some dark times. Love that these worlds are brought together!
There aren't many perfect albums out there, but Little Hell and The Hurry and the Harm are about as close as anyone can get to perfect. Both made by Dallas.
Man I'm so glad I found you a few years back. You truly understand music and it's so refreshing. Especially when its artists I've followed for a long time.
I saw Dallas Green live here in ottawa at a local theater and it was the best concert experience ive ever seen. Such hauntingly beautiful vocals accompanied by amazing guitar. Hes a god!
The most impressive thing about all of your videos is how you hear it seemingly for the first time then repeat it whilst explaining the theory behind it!
I went and saw Alexis live for the first time in over 10 years and I swear I teared up a few times. Especially when Dallas played Happiness. But then I got lucky AF, with a little patience, and was able to meet him after the show. I can't tell you how incredibly surreal and incredible it was to be able to hug your musical idol's neck, tell him thank you, and how much his music has motivated and inspired you. And the fact that he's so nice, so chill, and so humble just makes him that much more incredible of a person and artist. Thank God his voice was discovered!!
This was incredible to watch during the MoPop AIC induction show. Thank you for capturing all of our (who appreciates DC and his style) same reactions. (I too teared up at Dal's sweet smooth tones)
So good. We saw City and Colour at the State Theater in Ithaca NY a few years back and it was otherworldly. The sound was so lush it felt like you could swim through it.
I have loved Alice In Chains since I was a kid! Then I got into City And Colour. Then I realized he would cover Alice In Chains tunes & tonight I stumbled upon this one. I had a similar reaction. I got obsessed with right away with Dallas Greens cover, picked up my guitar & started working on my own, so simple & similar to his. When I was a teenager, I never thought I'd be 46, sitting on my bed, fooling around with an Alice In Chains song @ 5am 😄✌️💙🎵🤙
Alexisonfire was predominantly from my home town, St. Catharines...Dallas I believe is from Toronto. He came to town and was the first act to play our new performing arts center...quick Wiki check, he is from St. Catharines!
Hearing Alexisonfire in 2004 got started my search for Dallas’s first ep for so long. Like Knives hit hard for me at the time. Only saw Alexisonfire once live, but I got to tell Dallas how much the song touched me. Been a fan for so long!
What more do you want ! Michael’s reaction / emotions, great song, played by such an Angelic Voice in a lumberjack coat (happy to be a Canadian). Thanks Michael for sharing this with us, and Dallas for such a stellar and spellbinding performance ,,, I can’t stop playing this. :-)
