These videos are cool, they've only just been 'suggested' to me recently but it's great to see the bar raised for the 'reacts' videos. This is what I enjoy seeing, a person 'reacting' and explaining why something is so good with musical and technical insight. I was asked to do a video taking a look at a guitarist called 'Mrs. Smith' a while ago, I pointed out to my subscribers not to let her ability fly under the radar! It's great there's now a platform for people to appreciate your talents in an alternative way, I hope more and more people find your channel here :) (Edit: I was typing too fast and made lots of mistakes!)
Thanks and you as well my friend! I’ve always enjoyed your analysis videos. If your ever on the east coast of the US let me know and we’ll do one together. I’m in Baltimore. Cheers!
@@Guitargate That would be cool! I'm looking at getting 'guests' on in the future, so it would be possible to team up for something. I've just got to figure out how to best to present it, but I'll get there!
Get a room guys 😉 Like literally. You’re currently my two favorite react/guitar teachers on RU-vid. You both keep it real positive and it would be awesome to see you collaborate
I do theater work and I’ve set up multiple shows for this group they are most definitely one of the best bands working today. Susan, Derek the band and crew are super kind and humble and just a joy to work with. It’s always a good day when they come through town.
That’s awesome to hear…and yes they sound awesome. I’ve oddly run into Derek twice in NYC during the Allman runs at the Beacon. Super nice normal guy. Now Dicky Betts…
As a drummer i still agree 100%.. seeing this performance , hundreds of times now.. i can only imagine being on that stage and imagining what a special feelin this has to be being locked in with an entire band of such awesome musicians with soooo many people there
The look on your face and body language during his solo is what we all do, lol. To me, every solo by Trucks is like an amazing journey, his solos are structured so well to start mellow and then soar to towering heights. It's not even about the notes he's playing at that point - we all as guitarist could play the same notes he's playing, but we could not put the level of emotion and depth he puts in it.
I've been lucky enough to have seen Derek since he was just 15 years old. Anybody who saw him back then knew he was destined for greatness. He already had the lineage...he is afterall Butch Truck's nephew, one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, but Derek always had this unique marurity about him that was so noticeable even at an early age. I mean this dude was playing Miles Davis, Coltrane, Sun Ra and Willie Dixon like it was second nature before he was old enough to drive. Seriously, who plays complicated trumpet and sax riffs on slide guitar with that kind of authority and perfect intonation? Only Derek, that's who. I could listen to him play all day long...and have. Also, Derek's tone is instantly recognizable. It's woody, it's organic and it's pure. No delay pedals, no chorus, no overdrive, no nothing to interrupt that purity. Just an SG, a guitar cord and Derek's hands...that's it. Derek has a unique connection to his instrument that only great ones have...like Stevie Ray, Hendrix, Duane Allman and maybe a handful of others. Between his solo bands and the Allman Brothers, I have seen Derek probably 50 times on stage over the past 20 plus years, and he always leaves my jaw on the floor. When he is at the peak of his solos, there is nothing like it. Open your mind to Derek and your heart will follow. Anyway, great video and nice breakdown. Time to pick up my guitar and play along as well. By the way, to the other guitar players out there who may not know, Derek is 99% of the time playing in open E which can make it a bit difficult to play along in standard tuning... Enjoy...
Saw him at The Gin in Oxford, MS around 1993 or 1994...just a kid. Freakin monster talent even as a “kid” at that time...I dare say he was even old enough to be in the parking lot of that pkace
Saw Derek for the first time in a Braves hat, rattie t-shirt and surf shorts with Greg and Butch in 92. He brought the house down. Second best show to the 20 TTB’s I’ve seen. How they perform with that big old beast of a band amazes me.
Derek is the only guitar player to make me openly weep. Not just like some emotional tears you get sometimes. Like gross, people stare at you cry. And I was sober at this show!
The bass lines are so beautiful & carry the song. I've met Derrick, my oldest half brother was a roadie for the Allman bros from 71-74. He told me he plays in standard tuning not open tuning. He also told me he learned a lot of his playing from the players from India. Even his bass player plays lines from Indian music. That keyboard/organ player died a couple of years ago. They are the best soulful blues band out right now.
Have you seen Billy Strings live yet? Totally different genre obviously, but I'm telling you....it's one of the best shows that I've seen. I think my tops are: Robert Randolph, Derek Trucks, Billy Strings, Marcus King in terms of really enjoying the musicianship and guitar work involved.
JBlueMast saw billy strings at the back home festival is WV two years in a row. It’s a free festival. Unfortunately they had to cancel this year due to corona but I believe they’re having him back next year. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I got to see them live in 2019, and they were so incredible. And the crowd was so good too! All true music fans, super chill and polite, some joints floating around, tons of people un-self consciously dancing - just a wonderful experience all around.
I was at this concert - Crossroads 2010 Chicago. It was the first time I heard Tedeschi Trucks. I had never even heard of them at the time. They were absolutely one of the highlights of star studded show. This performance transcended music and went into the spiritual realm. Listening to it now still makes my head explode! Derrick can make each note sing in a way that most players can only dream of. If you want a good laugh watch the video of him sitting and playing with John Mayer and BB King where King gives him the highest compliment a player can receive. He's just that good.
I envy your good luck there, Lance. I didn't know about it, and was only 100 miles west. Kind of fucks me up that I missed this! But I've seen TTB more than any other band since then though, so lucky me eventually!
No man is above God. If we make it to the new Kingdom here on earth, with Yeshua as the our, Saviour, King, & teacher. I couldn't even imagine how beautiful Yeshua (Jesus) could sing & play Peace in the Valley, by Sam Cook & the Soul Stirrers.
Went to see that Clapton tour and agree Derek Trucks stole the show. His band came back to Glasgow the year after and I got to see them in a 200 capacity place for about 10 quid. What a gig!
Iam not sure a better group of players have ever been assembled in one group before, Mike wrote a beautiful song and by letting Susan take the lead it became one of my all time favorites instantly
Me and my wife met Derek on the sidewalk outside the Alabama Theater in Birmingham. We got pic with him, we both had our arms around his shoulders. My wife told him “your my hero”, and I was speechless and he was just his humble peaceful self. After that it was Macon, Tuscaloosa, Atlanta, Tuscaloosa, Nashville Ryman. Best shows of my life!
This band makes me feel the same way as you. The passion they exude just puts a lump in my throat sometimes. We might not all be able to aspire to Dereks level of musicianship, but we can all strive for that kind of passion in our playing. Some of the most memorable compliments I have ever gotten while performing weren't about my playing but about how I played my heart out for the audience. Thank you for what you do.
My favorite thing about this channel is just watching your reaction to the music. It just brings me joy to watch the impact great music has on people. That is why music will always be one of my favorite emotional outlets. Keep up the awesome work dude.
I saw Derek play with the ABB and a few others in the early 90's when he really was just a kid. Now Michael is saying he's is favorite guitarist on the scene and that makes me very happy. I wish Derek health and happiness and a long life.
Love this band. This band is so awesome. They organ player is SUPER AWESOME and blends so well with every instrument. Derek Trucks is in my top 5 guitarists. Period! Susan can sing like an angel! Awesome group!!
Derek Trucks is absolutely phenomenal. I remember a video of him playing with BB King and John Mayer and BB king just gave him the biggest compliment and he blew away these two legends. They were literally in awe of his playing, as we all are.
“Together” because he played for YEARS w/ Oteil in ABB. YEARS w/Kofi in DTB (and Mike too) and, of course, married to Susan. As close to a family band as you can get w/out being actual family. So beautiful.
I wish I could find someone who breaks down jazz tunes the way you do with blues/pentatonic songs. Reaction and lesson at the same time, highly entertaining.
Dereks guitar and Susan’s voice insanely emotional on this track, and the band, so so good. As a flute player its great to hear the breakdown of the guitar. Probably never get to see them here in Australia, especially now we are all in lockdown. Crazy world but now that I have discovered TTB the world seems a little less mad.
Can we all take a second listen to the guitar solo after you've had your mind blown by Derek, and listen to what Oteil is doing on bass. Mind blown again!
I was playing a gig in a little bar back in 2012 in Portland Maine. Tedeschi Trucks Band showed up after their gig that they had in town Portland for beers. I got derek to sign my fender strat, and got to hang with the whole band till after closing. Just a random awesome night...
I had to come back 2yrs later and comment. This song is hands down the most soul soothing song ever written...the cascading major7 progression....Susan's voice... Derek's playing. This song is in my top 10 of all time.
Outstanding breakdown of the song. I love the “floaty” sound as you describe it and now I can play along. When this album first came out I added this tune to my favourite 20. I add and subtract songs all the time but this one is still there. A great band and Derek and Susan are such a great duo. Derek melts my face and Susan melts my heart. We’re living in great times especially when it comes to music.
I'm going to see tedeschi trucks band in Boston Oct 4 Friday night at the boch Wang theater I'm so excited I have orchestra box seats it'll be the greatest night in my life and I'll cherish it keep up the good work Michael palmisano 🤙
OMG My dude has the best taste in the business! Thank you for shining light on the TTB! I lived in Dundalk for a while... wish we could have meet at the Full Moon Saloon! Thank you sir.
This song maxed out with a pair of 10 inch subs blasting with a good sound system is quite beautiful and makes for a relaxing drive for the few minutes it plays. Makes for a great road trip song to play.
As soon as Derek started with the slide, I got chills. Everytime I get chills. Something about it. I can hear and feel Duanne Allman playing through Derek. That Derek's slide work with Susan's voice, that energy, the emotion, that easy groove on the drums and keys. It's electrifying.
I saw Derek play in 96. He played at a tiny restaurant. It was a week day and they were still playing late into the night. I've seen TTB several times.
Thanks for all your uploads, you're really an engaging teacher. If you're feeling it, at some point if you were to breakdown what's going on with SRV's Lenny - Live at El Mocambo (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i5sqJNFFwqc.html) I'm sure all of us would appreciate you doing so, it's every bit as expressive and nuanced as any guitar based instrumental I've ever heard. Midnight in Harlem and Lenny are two songs I hold in the highest esteem.
Back when I was working, I noticed that, at meetings, whenever I would take a big breath, all eyes would turn to me, as if I was going to say something important, even if I wasn't planning to. The breath was kind of the marker of "something about to come", perhaps because big breaths are required as a precursor to saying something important that's more than just a few words. Trucks does a very similar sort of thing in his playing. Pay close attention and you'll see that he does this thing where he slides up from the first fret to the note he's aiming for, way up the fingerboard. He's going to play single-note runs on the unwound strings, but that slide up the neck is along the *wound* strings, and *sounds* like a deep breath. Obviously, he knows how to damp unused strings - one of the reasons why he puts his slide on his ring finger - yet he lets the "running start" from the nut up to the sought note slide all the wound strings without any damping. It's his "big inhale". He has basically ported a vocal style over to guitar, and it works SOOOO well. It makes whatever the next thing he's going to play seem really important. Brilliant.
This is my favorite version of this tune and so glad you picked it! Seeing them live is like a relief, like a glimpse into what's really goin down. Life is good when the creative are creating!
This might be my favorite song of all time it’s just perfect the singing the playing , the emotion the build up and then retreat is perfect. I get chills
Susan has such an incredible voice and she has serious chops on Guitar. Dereck well to say he’s great is just underrating him. He’s better than he’s given credit for. Such an amazing player. The Entire Band has such great chemistry.
Derek is king! Seen TTB 7x and never ceases to amaze, have a great time at the show! Thanks for keeping up these great breakdowns, the insight and song choice has been perfect 👌
Glad to hear that you also agree that Derek is the best doing it right now (he’s the best ever in my opinion). You’ll totally love TTB live show. It’s basically a religious experience man. If you think Derek knocks your socks off in recordings, just wait til you’re there in person hearing it come directly out of the man’s amp and into your ears. It’s an unreal musical experience. You’ll be hooked.
I'm so glad you did this one. I've been saying exactly the same thing about DT since I saw him with the ABB many years ago, at the Paramount in Oakland. Early on that night I found myself mesmerized by his playing, and quickly told my brothers and bro-in-law, "Watch Derek Trucks!" He was stealing the show while only playing rhythm, and demurring to Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes. I recall he got one solo, and absolutely established himself as the best player on the stage, and I LOVE DB's playing. Love it! That being said, when this video came out I had to also say that he's also established himself as the most unique, creative slide player. I don't think there is a single borrowed, Bonnie Raitt style heard-it-before lick in the entire song. That night, that band, that groove, that song, is truly an alignment of the musical stars. That's what ST is saying/reacting to in those couple of moments where she turns around to look at the other players..."Can you believe this? Are you hearing what's happening here?!"
So I was sooo incredibly lucky to catch his first on stage performance with ABB before he joined the band. He was perfect then at 12 or 13 yrs old and somehow he's gotten better.
I saw Susan way back in 2001 in Salina, Ks. Then again I hung out with her and Double Trouble at the studio where Susan was recording her song for Chris and Tommy's album produced by the legendary Eddie Cramer
Pretty sure it goes from the 4 chord (A Maj 7) to an Ab in the turnaround. Without a doubt, the best slide player currently on the scene. His uncle must be proud looking down from heaven.
That version of Midnight in Harlem from Crossroads is at the top of my list of best performances ever. It hits me the same every time I watch that video, and....I’ve seen it many many times. That Susan’s voice, Derek’s playing, the whole band, the groove, and the dynamics are just perfect here. Lightening in a bottle.
My brush with Derek Trucks was way back in the late 90's when he was just a kid trying to get into a sound check I was working at a venue in Rochester New York. I would not let him (Derek) in. He went to the front door, he went to the stage door, I would not let him in. The band was onstage waiting for him and I was asking "where is Derek Trucks" from FOH. The tour manager responded "He says you won't let him in". He (Derek) was right but I had no clue he looked like some high school kid. I was expecting some old guy with a beard and attitude. Derek was cool about it and it is a story I tell everyone (too much I am sure). You are right about Derek, he is an amazing Guitar player and a very humble guy. SoundTech Nerd Fact about Derek: He rarely uses any personal monitors. He relies on stage sound and likes to hear the mains when possible. When I worked his show back then, he had no pedals, just went direct from his Guitar to amp. Great Video!
I know you don’t play these songs note for note and you openly tell us that but bro one thing I never hear ppl say is....how GOOD you ARE. Not only are you very knowledgeable on music theory etc dude you can clearly tear that guitar up. You make it look pretty fuckin effortless as well. Keep up the vids bro. Rock on
I just came across your vids, love midnight in Harlem. I gotta say I've enjoyed watching how much you appreciate awesome guitar performances. Seeing the respect in your face makes it worth while. While I can barely play rhythm a killer picker is a treasure.
Oh so lucky you can see them, wow, I would love too see them. Derek is so awesome....the whole band is awesome, they are right on everytime with whatever song is being played. I wish I would of had a teacher like yourself many a year ago, I imagine I would be playing pretty good, but neither here nor there this band is the greatest I haven't heard of them in Las Vegas, but sure wish they would play here......I'll see them one day coming.......................best of luck and hope they continue their great music.........
