Fun fact: Phoebe wrote this song about Ryan Adams, whom she was in an abusive relationship with when she was 20. Hence line “You were in a band when I was born”. So glad to see you cover this! She’s one of my absolute favorites.
Phoebe played it to Ryan and was surprised that he didn’t like it 😂. And no, he doesn’t sound English when he sings (coming from an Englishman), but it’s a cool line
2:48 "Oh, I love her." Ladies and Gentlemen ... We got him! That's literally everyone's reaction when they hear/see her for the first time. She has such an incredible aura. She's just the coolest.
Man, seeing you smile through this reminds me so much of how I felt the first time I heard this song and discovered Phoebe Bridgers. Same energy man. As you often say, "She's a real one."
The English accent always makes me laugh - as an Englishman, Ryan Adams never sounds English. Awesome song though - there’s a reason breakup songs are so often the best.
You know I've never understood how bringing up a band he was in when he was younger is really a burn. She chose to be with someone older so naturally that person would have success dating back from around the time she was born. And it can't be a burn that his career peaked when she was born, because Adams only got bigger after Whiskeytown so I've always been puzzled by the line
Michael your choices and enthusisam grips me EVERY time. I am a psychotherapist and I gain insight into the human condition often as you discuss the lyrics and respond to these wonderful musicians. Thank you sir!
Just one other data point demonstrating how cool Phoebe Bridgers is...She named her first album Stranger in the Alps which is a reference to the ridiculous TV edit for the Big Lebowski line “this is what you get when you f$#* a stranger in the ass.” It was changed to “find a stranger in the alps.” She is awesome.
I love how he’s like ‘yeah guitar shit whatever yeah it’s 1, 6, 4, 5. Whatever but can we talk about PHOEBE THOUGH’ We’ve all been there bro. Good to see this play out live 😂
This video made my morning! I love phoebe. She has been my top artist on Spotify for 4 years now. I introduce her to everyone who is willing to listen. Seeing you discover her gave me literal butterflies! I’m subscribing!
Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your channel - often you're turning me on to someone, but this time I got to see you react to someone I discovered a while ago and fell in love with. I'm ancient, but Phoebe makes me hopeful for the future of pop music. Love your enthusiasm, Michael!
Hey, if you haven't heard of Courtney Barnett, I would highly suggest her. She's got some songs that are literally poetry put to music. And she does fun guitar stuff too. My personal favorite is "Avant Gardener". Edit: Btw, "Motion Sickness is about Ryan Adams. I feel like that gives quite a bit of weight to the accusations leveed against him.
@@PhilKRichard Yeah, it's just my favorite song from her. It's not necessarily the one he should look at, (though it is more than "just two chords" in the live version). I mostly mentioned it because he seemed to like meaningful lyrics, and that one is one of her most poetic.
dude!! Again, what an absolute joy it is to see that little notification that you've uploaded. Thank you for making these videos, you don't know how much it means to me and so many others.
Fell in love with her music at first listen ! Dunno if you did it but I discovered her with her band "Better Oblivion Community Center" and their song "Dylan Thomas" (who's one of my favorite poet tho), absolutely perfect !
This is awesome. John Mayer got me on the Phoebe train around when Stranger in the Alps came out and I haven't looked back. You would have a heck of a time reacting to "I Know The End", and I sure would love to see it.
Great video, Phoebe Bridgers is a very special talent! She's heavily inspired by her favourite artist (and mine) Elliott Smith, who was an incredible songwriter, lyricist and guitarist. Phoebe's song "Punisher" from her latest album is about him. If you haven't come across much of his music he's well worth a listen even just from a purely guitar perspective, he was absolutely incredible. He made the complicated sound simple and has some of the most interesting and unexpected chord progressions I've ever heard. Some of his highlights would be "Angeles", "Tomorrow, Tomorrow" (incredible guitar in this one) and "Memory Lane".
Song is about Ryan Adams I believe, lots of good suggestions of other tunes from her to react to but I think you'd enjoy Funeral based on your lyric-driven reaction to this.
Like other commenters below, it was intense for me to watch you going through what I went through late last year when I heard this song, the first Phoebe Bridgers song I had ever listened to. Like you, I was knocked on my ass. I proceeded to obsessively listen to Motion Sickness and ultimately every other song of hers, her collaborations, etc. exclusively for about the next 3 months. She is an incredible songwriter, singer, performer, and this song still shines as one of my favorites of hers and maybe one of my favorite songs ever for its emotional evocativeness. Thanks for sharing your reaction!
I believe it's the bassist doing those sweet high harmonies during this live version. She's certainly a talent. Storytelling through lyrics is what songwriting is all about imo. You should check out "End of the affair live on jools Holland" by Ben Howard. Sublime stuff!
Check the album out that she made with Conor Oberst(Better Oblivion Community Center). They’re perfect together. I’m sure you’ve heard Conor’s stuff before but it would be cool to see here.
old video, but you’ve gotta react to more of her stuff. i know the end, kyoto, any of her songs with the group boygenius (like salt in the wound, or me and my dog) i think you’d really enjoy them
Check out her duet with Jackson Browne on HER song "Kyoto", and also with Jackson Browne on HIS video for his new track, "My Cleveland Heart". Incredible stuff! (Still not as mindblowing as the Copycat Killer v of "Savior Complex" on a good sound system or earbuds, though")
check out “Dylan Thomas” or “My City” by Better Oblivion Community Center! it’s Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. it’s an incredible album!
Every single song by Phoebe Bridgers is phenomenal. Check out all of her albums, perfect discography IMO. There are very few bands that hold my attention through every song they put out but Phoebe is one of them Phoebe Bridgers Gus Dapperton Movements Noah Gunderson ERRA
Wish It Was True by The White Buffalo is absolutely incredible lyrically, as well as vocally. If you haven’t heard it, I would absolutely recommend; even if you don’t want to or have time to do a video dedicated to it, it is something that you just have to hear. Makin’ Me Look Good Again by Drake White has also always had a special place in my heart, and it would most likely give you a great deal of enjoyment to listen through. Thank you for all that you do and I’ll be here watching🙏🏼
I would like your opinion of "Lake Street Dive" Rachel Price has a wonderful voice and the band is solid... or maybe some old guy like Gary Moore who was a tremendous talent in his day...
