KingKoopa dude. Thank you. I showed friends and they’re like “yeah, cool” I’m like “DO YOU KNOW WHAT HES DOING AND HOW GORGEOUS IT SOUNDS RIGHT NOW?” They just shrug. Insane.
Well I'm a huge Sturgill fan so I'll keep it with him. I fell in love with his first couple albums and is some of the best country there is. And lo and behold he took a break from country, created his own damn genre in his latest album, and it's still f***** GOLD. I'd love to hear something from Sound & Fury. How about "The Best Clocknaker on Mars"?
Wow! I've seen Sturgill briefly with John Prine. Today I heard Waylon Jennings voice when he sang Billy Joe Shaver! From watching Fil and now you too, I realize my 1973-6 guitar lessons taught me none of this, as I was hell bent on playing every string on every chord I could. I'll be 70 in Feb. but this learning thing has really got me going.
So glad you did a video on this performance. I LOVE all the chords and progressions the guitar player does. Like you said "Thats real shit!" haha glad I found this channel.
Mike, your level of expertise is so far beyond me …I’m left speechless …instant intimidation …with a feeling of, “what do I do next”. That being said, I love watching all your videos. You are spectacular, an inspiration, an instructor beyond the classroom. If I were to aspire to be as anyone…it would be you.!!!
That’s a great pic Michael thank you for your insight. I’ve always enjoyed the song and come back to it often. My favorite part of the lead guitar is his expression throughout the song. He’s having fun.
the best part about this guy adam, is that if you go on his insta as of today, his top 2 video's are of him playing some beautiful original solo modern-esque jazz guitar with big 5-6 note chords. great player with amazing versatility and the some of the most mature playing and taste !
So glad to see this guy getting praise... Sturgill, yeah, he's incredible, but I mean Adam Davis! I didn't even know his name, but his playing was the first thing I noticed in this video. He's the sort of guitarist who's not playing anything too complicated, but the moment I hear it I think... man, I still have so much to learn.
Hey Michael, love these vids - your classic taste + broad ranging selections are right in my wheelhouse. I think you all would appreciate that one Marcus King Band number called Sorry ‘Bout Your Lover. (Great live version from Paste Studios, nyc). Keep em coming brother - and thanks!
I can't carry a tune or a stick of wood to the fireplace but I really enjoyed watching you have fun dissecting a great song from one of my favorite artists.
Thanks Michael for continuing to turn me on to new cool things I didn’t know about! For anyone wanting to dip their toe into this type of playing--if you play the major pentatonic with a few embellishments from the relative minor pentatonic-and most importantly- focus on the dominant 7-you can play convincingly enough to fake your way as a country player. Thats how I started but soon found myself going down the rabbit hole of kick ass country players like Brent Mason, Brad Paisley and Albert Lee (too name a few). As a Rock player (VH, Randy Rhoads, Paul Gilbert etc) I used to brush off country playing until I realized that it is just as unique and essential as jazz to any guitarist wanting to expand and explore new territory.
Speaking of Sturgill...how bout’ a breakdown of Call to Arms live performance on SNL. Seemed obvious the band had something to prove and boy did they...
@@dianethornhill3651 I agree. It was one of the better live performances I've ever seen, and I'm an old dude who has seen many of the greatest rock n roll bands in history. Sturgill tore the roof off.
You called out the great little moves of the guitar in this song perfectly- and great to give him props. This live 2 song medley is a go to jam for me weekly.
Love this way of playing. I really need to work on my hybrid picking. How about the Kentucky Lineman's version of Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line? Really interesting guitar parts especially the solo.
Dude... that silver sky sounds and looks great! I own a PRS SE custom 24 Floyd Rose and I love it but I would love to be able to afford a silver sky one day! I am a red blooded American who has proudly worn that flag on my shoulder overseas and I wish I could get only American made guitars but they are so damn expensive but seeing you play that guitar makes me want one even more. Great video bro keep it up and keep killing it!
Dude!! Just discovered your channel. This is absolutely a good idea, reacting and breaking down the song at the same time. Keep this going!! If I can ask a favor: could you do Sturgill's performance of Life of Sin on David Letterman please?
SplFEEDit I’m in the same boat. I know a few chords and can play some really simple stuff but 99% of this is over my head but I still enjoy it thoroughly!
This is my favorite full band Sturgill performance of all so far. Adam Davis has been his best lead player yet. The Estonian dude is good too but just not the same. Davis really had the twang.
Just started watching your channel and your amazing! I love that your wanting feed back from your viewers. If you don't know who shakey graves is please look into him. I'd love to see you dissect "Roll The Bones" by Shakey Graves PLEASE!!!!!! He's sick and your sick. Shakey has such a different way of playing and it grabs you and sucks you in, and I feel like you would have a lot of fun with this one. Thank you love the channel and what your doing, keep up the good work much love
Came here from the Tyler vid, then the Colter vid. Also love me some Sturgill so here I am! I left a song suggestion link on the Tyler vid, I'll leave a (different) song here as well.
Let’s see your take on Glenn Campbell’s “Gentle on My Mind”, and particularly version he played on Craig Kilborne live. Most under-appreciated guitar virtuoso of the 20th century. And yes I know that’s a bold claim!
Loving all of your videos! Try the solo from Sturgill - "Long White Line". Amazing guitar player in his group that harmonizes with himself, and it's just a damn well planned solo... you'll dig.
Jesse Stewart. IDK, maybe you introduced him to me. he's very raw, but emotional. I like 'cold beer' and I have the version with the wind blasts on my iPhone and when it's pumped in the car I know I'm loosing hearing.
Cool breakdown of what the lead is doing. I wish you were around in my twenties, so I could actually learn how to play well. I guess its not too late to learn. Gotta add a guitar to my list of things to shop for, right after weed and pills, hah!
What really surprised me was Post Malone's cover of this song and I'm Gonna Miss Her by Brad Paisley. Played it with Dwight Yoakum's band. Beat part was he was having so much fun with it
