That line and keep your nose.............and out of the pills.. is enough to put the effort into owning this song, while paying tribute to Childers. Gotta go now and see if he wrote this song. Well done Coach 👍
Saw that you loved Devil Wears A Suit And Tie, this Dust In A Baggie got me feeling some kinda way though! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-euy4A5niG8Q.html Also this guy is INSANE; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZUxFFH3Aekg.html
Most all his songs are true stories one about meet his wife, follow me to Virgie, basically first girl worth suffering withdrawal for......happy sound though he f'ing brilliant. Ones about snowstorm at in-laws lol . High lonesome sound. Feathered indians incredible roo. Called them pillbillies. Lost a lot of friends, at least how I like to remember them, to opiates. 🙏 Great video
Saw him for the first time opening for Margo Price at the Ryman. Couldn’t really comprehend how good he was. I kept asking myself, “Is this guy the best country songwriter I’ve ever heard?”
Anyone from Appalachia knows exactly the stories Tyler is telling. These hollers always have stories to tell. And God gifted people like Tyler to tell them for us.
My mom is from Poor Valley Mendota, VA Bristol area, her dad played banjo and harmonica, I didn't appriciate it until I had lived life, it is true American music, I have heard many stories, it's something I hope is never lost. These folks sing from the heart and you can't get any closer to God and humanity when you listen.
that little part where Michael utters "holy shit" under his breath is literally every person the first time they hear this song. One of my favorite songs ever.
@@Guitargate I need to make a reaction video to your reaction video. I love how you picked up on the pain in his voice, so much so that you were noticeably being moved emotionally. I was born and raised by a coal miner in the Appalachian Mountains and currently live in the same stompin' grounds as Tyler. I can tell you that pain in his voice is a real thing and hard earned. Great video keep it up!!
Dude, same. These react channels have introduced me to this whole new bluesy, folksy outlaw country stuff. It started with Stapleton but I've just been running through them now. Sturgill, Colter, Childers, White Buffalo, Cody Jinks. Fuck man. I don't know what it is but there are so many comments like yours and mine, it's just raw and real shit with some heavy lyrics. I can't fucking stop.
I love country, I hate FGL and bands like them. Wheeler Walker Jr. Explains it best. They all try to be like the next Garth Brooks. These guys are the real thing. Wheeler is a parody, if not Anti-country. I wouldn't recommend wheeler for people who dont have a dark sense of humor, like I do lmao.
I remember hearing this song for the first time. I just sat in tears. "Daddy I've been tryin', I just can't catch a break, There's too much in this world that I can't seem to shake". That line hit hard.
It was my son's death. Just haven't been able to move past it, kids shouldn't die especially after a few hours of living. "God" he's got some splainin to do when i get there, I'm going to hell but before that he and I are gonna have a little face to face.
I wish I could just bust solos out like that but I don’t understand the fret board up that high. I can finger pick colter tunes all day long and play and hold my own but I can’t solo for shit beside I know like one scale.
Well Tyler has taken a lot of the ol timers sayings and put them in his songs and they hit the spot. I’m pretty close to Tyler’s family and his dad is a good dude
When a song is so good that the chords don't matter, and Michael can't find the words to speak about it ... you've damn sure accomplished something great.
I know it’s about his friend’s grandmother but when I heard it, it brought a tear to my because it reminded me of my grandfather who passed a few years ago.
Shake the Frost, A Song While You're Away, 22nd Winter, Banded Clovis, Harlan Road, Oneida. TC is the man... One of the best songwriters of all time. I've listened to him every day for a year now. There's too many songs to list.
Zach Bryan "Heading South" or "Condemned" are both wonderful tunes that I found after finding Childers. These songs are some of my favorite next to Childers.
Tyler Childers is literally the Mark Twain of Appalachian music. His wail is like no other. Loved the Sturgill comment, they've been working together for long while. ❤ Listen to Shake the Frost if you haven't. You can almost see him painting the song in you head.
Michael Palmisano He is more hit than miss. His work is truly...I mean, it’s Dylan/Young/Nelson/Cash level. It’s almost unbelievable. I was so glad to have found his music. And I’m not really a country guy.
Yes!!! The 1st song of his I heard was Feathered Indians. I was hooked and listened to the rest of the album and it was like I had heard him before, like something familiar long ago. That's why I love his music so much cuz I feel like I've been listening to him my whole life, even though it's only been a couple years
That solo at 10:00 straight up slapped and went perfect with this song! Like for real, that should just be part of it. Also, this song makes me cry everytime. Hits too close.
I actually live in Pike county Kentucky where Tyler’s dad mined coal man this song describes this area to a T i have so many family members that have mined coal and my grandfather broke his back in the mines and he hasn’t been able to work since and the drug problems here are terrible
Live in pike county, Tyler played new years 2020 and literally blew the roof off the entire county, the arena, and all of Appalachia that night! Best concert ever.
This is hands down my favorite Tyler song. I love all his music but this song describes my childhood and teenage years perfectly. I grew up in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia across the state line from Pike County. Coal is king in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and West Virginia, and with the current state of coal, the hard working men and woman have had to go to the extremes to make money. Some legal, some not. This song reminds me of the daily conversations between my dad and myself growing up. It will be 3 years in June since he left this ol’ world and he pushed me daily to get my education, become a good man, stay away from the growing amount of pills and drugs, and to get out of the hills. He wanted me to have a better life than him and he knew it wasn’t in the mountains where the only livelihood is dying. I feel like maybe you are focusing on the pills a little too much in the song, however. To me, it’s about a father’s constant reminder to his young son about the life lessons of being a good man, working hard, and to not venture down the wrong path in an area where it’s so easy to do. Then it fast forwards to where the son has reached the crossroads of staying straight or taking drugs and he’s struggling. So he thinks back to his childhood and his father’s advice. He gets the chills because he realizes every word his father said was true.
By far my favorite reaction of this song, you had every intent to teach this song but after hearing his voice and the conviction in what he was saying, you immediately switched to full respect and just drowned in the song. I loved it because it showed genuine Love for music. ❤️🤘
Shake the Frost. That line “they raised the price of dreams so high I couldn’t pay”. Holy fuck wow. How true is that. He’s masterful in his songwriting. Truly special
@@drsimmons74 that line hit me in the chest like a train when I first listened to that song, I'm from a small town of 2,000 people and not shit for 30 miles either direction, nowhere to work besides one gas station and a diner. after I graduated highschool I had no idea how to get out of there but I worked my ass off that summer roofing houses, saved every penny then hugged my family goodbye then took off into the unknown with a full tank of freedom and no end destination, ended up across the country where I now live with a beautiful girlfriend, fulfilling career and a comfortable life but I'll never forget those times thinking of how badly I wanted to leave but couldn't because at the time gas was almost $5 a gallon and I couldn't get anywhere worth going to.
Your reaction to his voice and this song is exactly how it was for me. Tyler Childers is the real deal. I absolutely love this song. So good and what a voice!
For real it sounded good. Wish I could get that good at guitar. Just solo on the fly like that. I can play nose on the grindstone but I can't lead for shit 😂😂
The first line literally went right through me, instantly brought me to tears. Everytime I hear great music I laugh, and I immediately laughed and teared up lol His voice is so powerful.
I don't usually enjoy enjoy reaction videos but your sincere eractions and love for the arts makes this format work so well. I really love hearing your little remarks and analysis is so much fun. Seeing you goof off and play along and the pure emotion in your reaction on Tyler's very first syllable and the so sincere smile growing on your face is good fun to watch and share. I think I consider this a perfect song! It really gives you an idea about Tyler's artistry when the guitar teacher says "Who cares about the chords!?" It's even more impressive having seen some of your other videos, which has just as much sincere emotion on your part but where you actually bother explaining the chords. You're so right in that it's the emotion and delivery that's on display here, the lyrics and the story, and the instrument is really just a vessel for delivery, rightfully taking a back seat! Thank you for your thoughts!
Absolutely. Ben Todd is sick talented. Absolutely ridiculous how good his songs are. His playing is phenomenal. I can’t say enough. His solo stuff like “Using Again” and Lost Dog’s “One Shot To Wake” are absolute gems. His performance of “The Mountain” is so good. I like it better than the original and the original is by Steve Earle. I mean the guy actually plays a Steve Earle song better than Steve Earle. Not many people can do that. Sorry man. I’ll shut up now
He is responsible for the best version of "The Mountain" that I've heard yet. I love Steve Earle and Levon Helm but Benjamin Todd's banjo version won me over.
I hope you've become the Childers fan that I have these past years. I was late to the party but there are very few songs this man does that wont stir your emotions. Even when he does a cover, he puts that raspy yodel into it at the top of his dang lungs and it just is amazing! Mega talent!
Here are a few ideas: "Cover Me Up" - Jason Isbell (the Austin City Limits version is great) "Don't Think Twice" - Billy Strings (Dylan Cover) "White Freightliner Blues" - Molly Tuttle (Townes Van Zandt Cover) "Beautiful Stranger" - Marcus King Band
@@nosbigibby I think Jason is a great choice because his song lyrics are so incredible and on top of that he's a real guitar slinger. Not a singer-songwriter type.
You understand it. His guitar licks are beautiful, but that’s only one part of a beautiful piece of art. Thank you so much for focusing on the song as a whole. This song gives me chills too.
It's hard to imagine the absolute hopelessness experienced by the people living in these areas unless you have been to some of them. Entire towns built on the back of a dying industry, you couldn't write a sadder story. You should check out his song "Hard Times", this song speaks directly to the cyclical nature of life in coal country and how inescapable it can feel. Also - I've just found your channel today. I am really really enjoy your content. Keep it up.
*We're currently experiencing it in my town. Oil, coal, and railroad have dried up. Covid hit and made it twice as bad. Intense unemployment and drug problems abound. Sad to see the change the past five years.*
Russell county va about an our from pike county where tylers from and his songs are so critical of the area and rightfully so. We are drowning and theres no life rafts
@@propstick Has nothing to do with government, but the market demands. Even with Trump pro-coal policies, most energy providers prefered natural gases and renewable energy. They are more effective per cost than coals.
Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson. They all have real genuine voices that make them my favorite artists. I also love Eric Church, he’s not an amazing singer but a performer.
Bro I come across your page by accident and all I can say is I've been going thru your stuff and can't get enough. Thanks for doing these because it's amazing. Keep it up, man.
Thank you for making this reaction video. Or else I'd might never heard about Mr Childers. And wow...that's pain turned into music if ever I heard it. Colter Wall and now Tyler Childers...this year is musically blessed...if not healthwise. Hope you all stay save, and keep distant :)
Tyler is fire, man! I've been blessed with the luxury of watching him grow as a good human & an outstanding artist...from his first open mic night at The V Club in Huntington, WV to the red carpet at The Grammys. He's a true troubadour. And God bless ya for 'getting it'! Getting what Tyler is trying to convey there...the message. Lonesome...haunting...desperation! Appalachian Blues at it's finest and most raw. God Bless Tyler Childers!! Appalachia LOVES you SO MUCH!!
It's awesome to see someone having the exact same reaction to this song that I had the first time I heard it. Love the passion you have for music, I know I'm not alone. I would recommend either "Shake the Frost" or "Hard Times" for your next Childers video. Again, thank you for doing what you do!
Listening to Childers on repeat right now and even though this song is one of his best, it’s “shake the frost” for me. What a great songwriter and what a voice…loved your reaction!! So much fun watching your face light up the second he started to sing…
Jason Isbell is fantastic (as a lyricist and a guitarist), literally anything would make for a good reaction video. If you want acoustic, pick "Cover Me Up" or "If We Were Vampires" if you want electric, go with "Never Gonna Change" or "Decoration Day"
I felt your passion and pain on hearing this song.. I would never have heard most of who you react to being from the UK, Some great singers .. and great reactions . The little riff you slipped in was awesome too
First time watching. Tyler couldn’t be more genuine if the good Lord placed him directly on stage with his bare hands in front of your very own eyes. Truly a gifted, authentic soul. Check out the Universal Sound and the story he tells there.
Colter Wall’s song “Cowpoke” has a completely different song, and on the “Western AF” channel you can hear him talking about it a bit beforehand (Here’s a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MmxKsK90L14.html )
I love watching people who actually appreciate good music, listening to Tyler Childers for the first time. It's like watching them take axe handle to the forehead. "Wow, how have I not heard this yet!?"
At the same time I worry about those who don’t feel it. Soulless empty shells posing as humans. How can anyone hear this and not be moved? It’s seriously signs of a sociopath
Childers is an amazing artist and humble person. He is fairly local to me, i've watched him for years on open mic nights as he grew into what he is today. Real and raw.
I've never seen someone with such great interval and theory training that still gets that much out of a straight forward 4 chord song. Loved the video keep it up. Love the silver sky as well.
I have watched so many reactions to this video and yours is damn good man, the way you are playing with him at 10:08 you definitely feel the emotion in the song. I moved to a county near where he is from recently and pills are a huge epidemic there, this song means so much to me and my family, it speaks volumes to the struggle in the Appalachians.
Gems on vhs is a super underrated channel for anyone looking for this unnamed genre, western AF is also amazing. Spread them far and wide. Country music is dying and Nashville's killing it. 👍
This is why we love you Michael - you catch the chords and the technique, but most of all you catch the feeling. Tyler is such a talent, a true troubadour - with the heart and soul of a people in his voice and in his fingers and in his feelings. Like they say on the streets, "Real recognize real." Michael Palmisano you are appreciated.
It is so rare for me to see someone who loves immersing themselves in music, not just the theory, but the artistry of it as well, as much as I do. I've watched two of your videos and seeing your reactions to songs I love have already brought me to tears. Please keep it up! Also if you're looking for more great tunes like this I suggest you check out "Hymn #101" by Joe Pug, "75 and Sunny" by Ryan Montbleau, "Blondie and Dagwood" by Adam Carroll, and definitely "Rather Low" by Nick Shoulders. Oh and Colter Wall has a video where he sings a song called "Cowpoke" that brings me to tears every time I listen to it.
Just popped up on my feed again- and I have to thank you for introducing me to one of my favorites of the past 2 years. Tyler has already sold out his Red Rocks shows for 2023! I love his voice SO MUCH. Thanks again, that is why I keep watching... and I definitely listen to music in a whole new way since viewing your channel.
The first time I heard this song It stopped me in my tracks, and I couldn't hold back the tears that followed... cause I fling lived it, and I survived to text here about it... many didn't... buried several of my kin in Kentucky who weren't so lucky... you can hear the pain in Eastern Kentucky in his voice... Love ya, Tyler.
Hey Michael, came across this reaction vid you did, and i must say out of "ALL" the other reaction vids on this song, you're the "only" one who got the message of this song correct, by paying attention to one word that sets the whole story of this song into place,,,,,"Pills". Good lookin' out👍🏼
You are the only who did a reaction to this song who made the connection that his dad was addicted to the pills. Nice work. That’s why your reactions are the best.
I'm from a small town in the oldest county in West Virginia called Hampshire County. The pills herion and meth is everywhere ruining so many peoples live. I was using pills after I was prescribed something mild for my back being out of line causing really bad pain. Well the pills I was getting weren't helping anymore so I had to get stronger ones off the street. After my back was better it was to late I was hooked and was introduced to perk 30s and was doing multiple a day then started to smoke them after I learned you could do that. I would spend a whole pay check in a day or 2 and would have to start hussling day to day to get my fix. I lost my girlfriend I loved more than the world lost my car lost my family's respect and trust. One day I told myself if I keep this up I'll never have anything and will stsy in my current state unless I do something about it. I called for help and got the help I needed. The hardest part was the first step forward and telling myself I have a problem. I have been clean for 3 years now and counting. When I first heard this song it was just unreal. Not only can I relate to this song but also everyone else that has or still is struggling. I love to olay along to this song anytime I'm feeling down and it helps me to keep grip on what I have accomplished. Love this song and am very happy that you did a video on this beautiful piece of art!!!
A good next one would be anything by Shakey Graves, but Late July live version is one of his best in my opinion: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eUkSTnUK_T0.html
