ya'll know he's the Real Deal!! There are hundreds of people out there who claim to be giving away lessons for free but end the end you end up at a page asking for paid subscription. But this fellow right here (God Bless Him!!) i believe is the only person who really gives free lessons (check out his website you'll come to know www.justinguitar.com) . Whatever i know i owe it to you Justin. Thanks Man.

It's worth mentioning that to do this the fingers that aren't in use need to be very relaxed. If you notice them shaking that's a good thing! It means your fighting tension that's built into your muscle memory. Pause while the shakes happen, let them happen and relax into them while they happen (it may be the whole hand shaking, or just one finger). When they stop (don't fight them with more tension) continue. When we lift our fingers far above the fretboard we are creating tension to hold that finger above the fretboard. Do it often enough and it feels normal, it feels relaxed, but it's not! How can holding your finger far above the fretboard be normal? Truly relaxed, the fingers should just hover above the fret. This lesson is more important than Justin gives it credit for and this approach should be used when learning anything! Chord changes, new licks, any thing! Do it slowly so that you train in relaxation to your muscle memory, thus your playing.

Make sure you cover the body of your guitar. It requires full attention. I was drooling all over the guitar.

Great point; it makes perfect sense what you are saying about the tension and relaxing, also about all the nuances of acquiring muscle memory. Great video lesson. Just looked at a John Standerfer video on the same subject. It is good as well.

I've been playing guitar for six years, and after trying to perfect lead playing on and off for the last 3, it really frustrated me that I wasn't getting any better. I've begun to dissect my playing, finding out the bad habits and rectifying them. This being one of them. Wish me luck with this, and best of luck to you all doing the same :)

Moving my fingers with little motion didn't help me at all, I tried it for almost 2 years continuously.. But I noticed a big change when a start feeling the rhythm and synchronisation of my left hand fingers rather then trying to control my fingers movement .

just want to say I've been following you for quite a while and I've enjoyed your lessons immensely. recently noticed in my cording hand that the majority of the time when I'm playing either chords or soloing my left hand the middle finger when not on the fretboard is basicly looks to me like im flipping off people. I play in church so this isnt really good habit thats appeared. would this hep correct that or do you ha another suggestion?? Help please Thnaks for all your great lessons.

How long does it take till you can naturally and comfortably play with the fingers as low as possible, not flying away? I realize the only way to play fast and accurate, is to gain control of this, never worked on it before...it was so hard to do, ignored this issue for a long time.

But it is almost impossible to do this on guitars with very high action, especially on nylon string classical guitars like mine which tend to have higher action. Anyway, thanks for the tip Justin, I'll try it out.

I'm wondering one thing. If i realize i suffer from this and i start working on this, then isn't every other "routine" playing you do contraproductive since the "reflex" is still there when you normally play a song? Then the question would be: should one JUST exercise THIS and nothing else UNTIL the problem is fixed? Anyone here that allready fixed this issue?

this is so fucking hard.... my index is so uncomfortable while getting to 4rth string and above....(lower strings) anything from D, A and E strings feels uncomfortable .... any tips on that ? the most comfortable position is when my index mutes the first string but I don't want that to happen.....

Well I let my pinky fly for 5 years.... He feels like Hannibal Lector as we speak trying to escape from restraining coat...mix a little bit of obsession personality and you will know where I'll be at 1am. Huge thanks Justin!

Tried hard, never got this down. My fingers have rejected my brain as their leader, and formed and existence in total anarchy. Once I move my pinky, all other digits scramble out in random directions. Luckily I play in a punk rock band.

So I've seen this question already asked but it wasn't ever answered...if I'm trying to fix this issue is it counter productive to continue playing my other normal practice routines considering that the problem will still be present in my current playing?

@AndreiGrozea
@AndreiGrozea 7 лет назад
Combine it with "the spider" and do it as a beginning exercise and it's gonna be quite efficient imo :)
@orangeblue3531
@orangeblue3531 6 лет назад
Yes, it is counter productive if this issue creeps up in anything you are currently playing or practicing. Otherwise you are just ingraining old habits further into your muscle memory. At that point, no practice would be more beneficial to any practice at all.

@JG-wg6uc
@JG-wg6uc 10 лет назад
of course you can!! but learn the g major scale first. i'd also recommend you go through all of his beginner lessons as all of them have their own importance.
@alem4831
@alem4831 10 лет назад
You HAVE to do this, ESPECIALLY if you're a beginner. Developing proper technique at an early stage will make everything a lot easier. Your playing will be more precise, effortless, and just overall better. If you don't know any scales, just play the first four frets (1, 2, 3, 4 on the 6th string, then on the 5th, the 4th, and so on...).

There's a harsh truth about learning a musical instrument that many people simply don't want to hear. There are some things that, if you don't learn them when you are relatively young, you will never really be able to learn. You can't learn muscle memory if the muscles are too old. This exercise is simply impossible for me. My hands shake and it hurts to the point where I can't play. Ever since I started trying to learn the "proper" way, my playing has suffered. I prefer to just learn songs and as long as I can play them, who cares about technique?
@dsddsdd7566
@dsddsdd7566 5 лет назад
I hope no one took your comment too seriously and felt discouraged by it, cause it's complete bullshit. While it's true that you USSUALLY ( not always ) learn A BIT slower when you are older, you still can learn new things. Also, it is harder to get rid of bad habits the more ingrained they are, but it's not impossible, just a matter of a bit of patience. Most people prefer to rely on technique they already posess, even if it's not optimal, because they don't have the patience to invest like a month into focusing on unlearning bad habits. Instead they prefer to moan and learn new songs, ingraining bad habits even more, just like you.

He's just bloody lazy and impatient, so he justifies it to himself by saying that technique isn't important. Everything on the guitar requires some degree of technique.

Interesting, I'm 46 & started playing guitar 7 months ago. Started this exercise 3 months ago & doing it daily. Initially I was the same as you (shaking, hurt badly), now I'm getting pretty good at it (hasnt hurt like you say since about week 2?). Muscle memory is just learning how to fire the muscles as efficiently as possible, it's lactic acid build up that is causing the hurt. We can pretty much learn anything at any age its just our ability to adapt slows, it doesn't stop.
